No colors problem in SL

Recently with the new release of Second Life there has been issues with the FX series graphics cards. No colors showing up. Only textures. From what I have found it has to do with the alpha bug that was fixed. I tested this out with creating a ball setting the texture to blank then adding a color to it, there was no color showing up of course when I set its transparency up a slight amount, about 2, the color appeared. I have an FX 5500 card that I am using at the moment and it took me about a day to figure out how to fix this error. What I did was download a program called Rivatuner, its a graphics tweak program.
What you do to fix this bug with SL is:
First Download Rivatuner.
Second when installed click on the little icon that looks like half a square next to a box that says 'Forceware Detected'
Third click on the little button that shows a sweep.
Fourth it will ask if you want to restart your computer once this is done, click on no.
Fifth start up SL and see if anything has changed.
This has been tested and has worked on two FX cards already. An FX 5200 and my FX 5500.
I hope this information is of use to people that are having this problem, and remember don't mess around with RivaTuner to much if you don't know what you are doing ;)

That ain't good. my older PC uses a 5200... I guess LL has something against the FX series... Not only is this computer probably going to experience this problem when i try it later, but it already experiences a problem with the textures turning into acid and messing up. There is a post about that in the first look forum as i believe.

Well, LL actually did a really amazing thing when they fixed an alpha bug that has affected openGL for years now. I think its just another FX series glitch. These cards are really faulty its lucky that I was able to find a fix for it so fast. I am just hoping this will help people in fixing that glitch.

Ragar, suffered from this issue and took your advice. Loaded the Rivatuner, followed your steps and my FX 5500 now has its color overlay back. Now THIS is why we have resident answers, sometimes they actually work. Good job Ragar.

I have a GeForce FX 5950 Ultra/AGP/SSE2 and am not seeing anything like this at all. Maybe its only certain FX cards?

The newer versions of the FX cards are much more improved then the older models. The ones that mostly have the problems are the cards that where first released in the line of the FX series. Most of the people that seem to be having problems are people with FX 5500's and 5200's. Though these two cards are the only ones that I have found that has had this error on SL.

I haven't yet tested rivatuner on an ATI card so I am not sure if this fix will work for you. Though you can try it out. About the discussion on the other forum I do know about that one. I posted this before I found that one. I am glad that it does have linden attention it is something that does need to be fixed. :)

Thank you so much!

I was unsure what to do when I first realised I had this problem. I didn't even realise what the problem was until a few days when I noticed that colours weren't being applied to textures.

I have the FX 5600 (not for too much longer hopefully!) and resetting the driver back to defaults in Rivatuner did the trick.

Thanks very much.

Thank you, too... and thanks to the person who referred this article from the JIRA...!

However, since I applied the RivaTuner I experience yet more frequent crashes, and the whole thing is slower. Sometimes the harddisk won't stop swapping for 2 minutes just when I turn my avatar (at 512M board memory), which never happened so excessively before.

Anyway, it seems to improve things a little for the time being, until I find the cash to replace this crappy graphics card. I'll never buy a computer from the supermarket again. ;)

Cheers

After some experimentation, I believe it's not necessary to use RivaTuner, you just need to change a setting for the video card. I have tested this solution and it definitely fixes the white problem (I too have an FX card), but it may not work for everybody. You need an Nvidia card for this, although a similar solution may work for other cards.

Fix :

(1) Right-click on a blank area on your desktop.

(2) Click 'Properties'

(3) Click the 'Settings' tab.

(4) Click the 'Advanced' button.

(5) Click the 'GeForce' tab.

(6) Click the 'Performance & Quality Settings' text.

(7) Click the 'Image Settings'. It is probably already set to 'Performance' or 'High Performance', this is causing the white problem. Change the setting to 'Quality'.

- If you can't find the 'Image Settings' then you may have a different version of the Nvidia driver, so just look around the various options until you find a Performance-Quality setting.

(8) Click OK, then restart SL - the problem should immediately be fixed, no need to empty the cache or restart the computer...

I hope this helps, as I said it may not fix it for everybody, but through various tests I found this always fixed it.

You should start a new thread. This one, and its information, are rather old.
