I wouldn't know, my crystal ball has been broken since 1.23. Some people are more comfortable opening up a dialog with a stranger than others. :)

If I'm in my shop when someone arrives I typically greet them with a simple hello, and tell them if they have any questions to let me know, then I just leave them alone. Sometimes they'll ask a question or two, other times they just thank me and go about their business shopping. I think as long as you don't get into pushy sales tactics you're ok.


This is what I try to do too - I'm still fairly new to retail business and I've been trying to feel my way around to the right balance. Unfortunately there isn't a one-size-fits-all-customers answer.

I usually just let the shopper know I'm there, and say "I won't hover over your shoulder but feel free to shout if you have any questions." The responses I get vary from chatty conversation, to a curt "thanks", to complete silence.
