Where do humans hang out?

One of my fondest memories of my early SL experience was dropping in on Luskwood as a human and having a great conversation involving lots of people. Last time I was there it had become a store with a few silent avatars hanging around.
The level of activity in Luskwood often varies with the time of day or (particular to our venue) some RL activities - for example, if you had dropped in during RMFC (http://furry.wikia.com/wiki/Rocky_Mountain_Fur_Con_2008) or more recently, AC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthrocon), then yes, Luskwood proper might have seemed a bit underpopulated... many folks who are regulars on the platform were physically at those events rather than logged into SL.

Aside from that, yes, there are certainly times when folks are at the platform but mostly (or entirely) afk... lots of the 'regulars' hang out there while multitasking (scripting, texturing, working on animations or other SL-related things) and might not see or immediately react to folks. There are also times when there are so many folks there and the conversation(s) so thick that new arrivals have been known to express dismay at their ability to keep up with the chat at all. Again, it varies... you might try dropping by at a different time of day.

Regardless, good luck on your quest... keep us posted on what you find :) .

Medeival areas are often good
07-17-2008 08:44
There are several medieval theme places that have decent human populations, partly because they are to a degree joined, so people jump around until they find where everyone is that day, and partly because most of them filter out the bots before they can arrive at the sim. The drawback is that you usually have to go through the process of adding a non-combatant tag so you can interact but not be gutted. And if you are dead on the floor, you're not supposed to do the Monty Python thing and talk (I'm feeling much better, really I am).

I used to stop by Bad Girls, long ago. I don't know how they do it, but they seem to keep full and busy and for a lot of hours in the day. And the lag has gotten better (less). Must have the right connections, either political or technical...

If want to meet people in SL join New Citizens Inc., they are not just for the new guys, they host "oldbie" events too. If people are not busy building/scripting, running events, or just goofing off, we tend to have good conversations here.;)

Also enter the oldbie events (if you are over 90 days in SL), every Friday NCI hosts two pary events just for hanging out and having fun!!:D

Not only that, if you join the New Citizen's Inc. group you will aways have a person to talk to, just be careful about the spamming (on both your end and from others).:p

No bots in these areas, other than the ones who look like them (for example my tiny robot AV)!!:p

I'd recommend playing Tiny Empires, too. Each TE realm has a group chat room where you can chat and make friends...I made several good friends that way.

I sometimes enjoy hanging around at NCI Beach...you often see ppl there chatting and tinkering with their latest creations. :)

When I want human interaction there are usually four places I look for...

#1 - I search events for trivia. I always find real people playing trivia and I enjoy playing.

#4 - I find a building or scripting class. Generally folks are pretty busy there working on their builds but sometimes you land in an especially fun class where folks are laughing and having a great time.

I tend to prefer solitude most of the time on SL but when I do want interaction I do these two as well. I'm not a club person at all, so another element is not only finding places where people are, but "likeminded" people. I don't enjoy places where I'm being reminded constantly to "tip the world" and the conversation is punctuated by "Hooooo!" but I LOVE going to classes of most any type where the conversation is about a build or subject.

I was in Luskwood for the first time a month or so ago and each time there were a lot of people standing on the landing platform in front of the vendor area, so that may have been due to time of day.

Excellent suggestion Byrony. My alts have their homes set to one of the NCI locales and there are ALWAYS people around no matter the time. (Plus another great place to take classes, find freebies, etc.)

Don't forget The Shelter. The Shelter has fun events like building competitions, and is just generally a very warm and friendly place.

I thought this was an anti-furry anti-robot thread!

But I love testing things in sandboxes like when I was new. They seem to attract all the most wide-eyed enthusiastic avatars who haven't become jaded yet. People fly right up to you and ask "how did you learn to make that? can I try it?" Most everyone walking around is looking to meet people and learn. Just looking around at all the wrecked freebie vehicles, freebie houses, and plywood construction attempts makes me remember how truly cool SL is, and how exciting it is especially when you're new. It's good to take a break, leave your own space for a while, and go back to your roots!

Toby's is great. Always people there, especially on a Friday night (est), and if I don't bring a date I can get a dance partner and a conversation most every visit.

So what do you think? Is the number of humans growing or shrinking? And if there are a lot of humans online, where the hell are they?

If I ever meet one, I'll forward their location to you. :P

My favourite hangout recently installed a Campmaster so now the sim is full of bots and no real people to talk to. I don't think I'll be going there again until the camper-bots are gone.

Meanwhile I recently discovered the Forum Cartel Hangout. Like any place it has quiet times and busier times, but at least the people there are real.

I'm still looking for other busier places to hang out too. I might follow the earlier siggestion of the NCI - I always refer new residents there, might be nice to hang out and help in the sandbox or something.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys, but I'm not looking for specific locations. I've found a few places I can go to find humans at the keyboard. That's not the point.

Avion Raymaker says people walk up to him and talk while he's in a sandbox. SL used to be like that everywhere. My question is, why isn't it anymore? Why is it now that to find conversation you have to have the inside scoop on where people are hiding? Why can't you find these palces everywhere you go? With 60,000 people online you ought to be able to just run into them, right?

For the 99% of the grid that is not [insert you favorite hangout here], what are all the green dots up to? If you just landed in-world, how would you find people?

Why Zee Linden told us in his super shiny blog post about the economy. Land has expanded 44% while the population has not. Bots are about 15% of the active population.

More people are using SL so that they can be alone, and sometimes talk to people, versus the other way around.

Where Do Humans Hang Out?
07-17-2008 18:38
Anya,
All the posters here must be bots, let me be the first - "Paul McCartney"!!! "Ringo Starr!!!"

I usually start at NCI, like Raymond suggested, or somewhere that Search->Events->Educational shows a current class.

I have been hanging out at NCI Fisherman's Cove for over a year, met tons of great people and helped a lot of new people. It usually is active until about midnight SL time, but is has recently gotten more ANZers there.

I read this all the time- and for the life of me I don't get it- I always find people- I may not always find stuff- but I always find people. That said- I still REALLLY miss Phat's- the new place is nothing by comparison.
When you say the new place do you mean the new Phat's or Sweet Hearts? I have not been to Sweet Hearts for a while but it was like the Phats of old as far as I could see, Dilbert and wife applied the same formula to Sweet Hearts as they did to Phats and people came, still come afaik.

I found people!
07-17-2008 19:19
Going off the mainland for a few...

Destination 4 turns out to be a casino. About 15 people present. Nobody is responding to my greetings. Most of these are campers with SLINGO NATION JUNKIE tags, gathered to collect L$6 per hour, metered by Camp Ma$ter 2.0. Don't spend it all in one place! One of the people present have been in SL two years. Campmaster says 10 of 10 people are logged in. I don't know what the other 5 are doing, but they aren't chatting. Everyone has the tag. Maybe there's another camp system I'm not seeing.

Another relative oldbie is now here, without the tag, and she chatted with me. She's playing, but not winning. Definitely human.

The range of the campmaster is 96 meters, so maybe the other three people in the sim are camping, too. Let's go see...

One is a SlingoNation Officer, whose avatar is embedded in a pole. He's not answering my greetings. Another has a JUNKIE tag. Kinda quiet, like the others. The third is playing a game. No tag, and he chats. Not winning. Definitely human. He didn't stay long.

There are now 18 people here, so at least four have come recently. Let's see if we can find 'em...

The other player is now gone, too, so that means five have come. Everyone now has the JUNKIE tag.

Adding Slingo Nation to your picks apparently nets you L$25/mo.

Destination five has two small groups. I TP in to find I'm at Alliance Navy headquarters. The automated greeter tells me I'm welcome on the surface but not in the buildings, which is where the people are. I admire the build, brave the mine field (I don't get blown to bits), and pick destination six...

A smallish group and a largish group, for a total of 31 people in this sim. The large group is at Red Rock Amphitheater, where Phemie Alcott is playing live, and people are chatting. I'm greeted. I say hello to everyone, but I'm going to go check the other group really quick.

The smaller group seems to be a reggae club. Nice place, the music is good, and there's a DJ. I'm greeted by the manager, and I say hello. There's no other conversation except chat gestures. I'd stay and see if I can convince them to chat, but the top of the hour is near and I want to get back to the concert before it ends. Lots of chat ascii art here at the reggae club, so I'm gonna book before it drives me nuts...

Back to the amphitheater. I'm greeted again by someone else, there's lots of chat, and it's not club chat. These are definitely humans, of the friendly variety. And the performance is good, but ends soon after I arrive.

There's a third group now, and it's a blues performance at Mama's. More live people. I'm going to stay for the performance.

I'm calling this visit a smashing success, and landmarking the amphitheater and the blues club. I'll give the reggae club another look on my way home.

Edit: Okay, so the blues club was pretty quiet and the organizers a bit heavy with the chat pictures, but I still think the crowd was human. I was too tired to check out the reggae club. I'll get it another day.

When I joined SL almost two years ago I couldn't go anywhere without finding conversation. That's not true anymore and I want to know why. It's not a matter of degree or perception or nostalgia, either. It's night and day. I used to stay up 'til 6am chatting.

I remember SL being like that too Anya.
Clubs may have been full of blingtards, and Howlllllzzzz, but they were real people, and you could converse with them. And often amongst them you would meet some real gems of people.
Shopping trips were usually an adventure in meeting new people as often people would just start talking.

Nowadays, I spend most my time looking for "live" people, usually with very little success. And if I do find them, they don't speak English. Seems that during the Euro/Aussie hours SL has become an even lonelier place than it was back when we were well in the minority.

Is it 'bot-like behaviour' to want to go about your private business without engaging in meaningless unrewarding chit-chat with every buffoonish Tom, Dick and Harriet who decides to send you unsolicited IMs that just say "Hiya" (as if that's any way to start a conversation with a stranger)?

Listen, peeps; if someone refuses to speak to you, you may have to consider the possibility that you are a moron with nothing interesting to say.

The question is, are there more people like you than there used to be, and is a club the best place to be seeking privacy and solitude? :-)

On their islands, I would say. The proliferation of private islands causes more people to stay away from the mainland. Just open the map and zoom way out. You will notice a lot of green dots on individual island regions.

Furthermore, I suspect that even on the mainland the population density (active residents per region) is smaller than it used to be, which makes chance encounters more unlikely.

yea.

I heard someone on the forums suggest once that if you're looking for a quiet place to go have sex where you'll never be distrubed - pick any SL shopping mall.

Thing is, it's no joke.
