there is actually a server that the entire internet relies upon for dns info. without it the internet could not work.
From: Brash Zenovka
It could work like the internet itself, the majority of servers and websites are online 24/7, but some are more reliable than others. People buy domain names and lease server space to host them. Perhaps one day SL will mimic that. Of course the main internet doesn't need a central database tracking everyone's inventory =oP so the analogy falls apart there (and a lot of other ways, too).

Don't forget that all LL needs to do to prevent a crash is to not release sims to auction for a fews days, thus reinvigorating demand. History shows they like seeing the base price for auctioned sims at $2,200 or higher and the base mainland per meter price at L$9.0-$10.0. History also shows that those 40 sim dumps at once are few and far between.
I publicly agreed with this a couple days ago, but now I'm having second thoughts. The map is very, very yellow, and it *seems* like lot of that yellow has been in the hands of resellers for increasing durations. I suppose everybody is a "reseller", just on different timeframes, but... I'm just starting to wonder how many days of "land inventory" are already on the market, and what percentage of total land growth is just going into extending that inventory. I guess I think there's a chance that the price impact of LL supply-management may be very much delayed if a major source of current demand is to increase such inventory, and if resellers start trying to decrease it.

There's ICANN, which divvies-up the top level domain namespace and address spaces, but technically, DNS itself is pretty distributed. I know making this distinction seems pedantic, but in theory, multiple nearly independent virtual worlds could interconnect, but only if namespaces were similarly partitioned to allow separate management of the subspaces.

My guess is that the start prices were set way back before SL got huge, and nobody expected sims to regularly sell for more than $2000. Since they do, it is quite silly to have a start bid that low.

If you're referring to the root servers, there are actually 13 of them, not just 1.

13 clones of one server, run by one outfit. the point still stands. i doubt the asset server is one individual box either.

I appoligize for nit-picking but my inner geek can't let that pass. The root dns servers are, by design, run by different organizations on a variety of hardware and software platforms specifically to avoid having a single event or exploit taking them all out. I would be surprised if the asset servers were likewise hardened.

so who calls the shots then? each outfit decides for themselves what info to publish? how does that work?

I see your point, but of they had no worry about the sims selling to low because SL is huge now, then they could just start sims out at 1L with no worry because the bidders will take it up. I wonder if theres any truth to a previous comment in this thread about Bragg possibly being an influence in this higher starting bid.

1.2million sqm + is on auction right now, and figures around this one, will be auctioned in many weeks to come, after the breakingpoint is reached, landprices will fall ...its only a question when.

IMO: 1250US$ might be very realistic thats a bit more then L$5sqm

i wouldnt buy any Anche stocks right now ;)

People have been saying this for 8 months now. Personally I just concern myself with what prices are right now, no-one knows what they will be tomorrow.

i dont know how much land was for sale a few months ago, but i have seen it rise 480000sqm, in the last 24hrs to a total of 25.7million sqm , in a month it very well could be 35million (i think even more) with corsica beeing auctioned, who is gonna buy that ?

*i also think that land prices at say L$6 would give the economy a big impuls.

The failure to rez issue is going to quickly become a factor. I no longer need land for a house or furniture if I am afraid to pull any no copy items out of my inventory.
