I have been banned from the 'Hell's cafe and Mall Hawaii, I'm guessing because due to lag my horse ran into someone, I'm not even sure about this as the screen was frozen at my end and I couldn't see where I ended up, I asked for a reason (from behind the barrier) and was just ignored.

I feel I have been unfairly treated, I am happy to say sorry to anyone I jostled, but to be banned without notice, explanation or the courtesy of a reply when I ask for one.

Is this okay in SL?

I've no desire to go back as per above but I'm curious regarding what feels like unfair treatment.

A land owner can ban anyone they like for any (or no) reason at all. They own the land. Just like in RL, what the owner says goes.

If you have no desire to return, and you feel the land owner is being unreasonable, just ignore the ban. Second Life is huge. There are plenty of other places to visit.

Edit: Is it appropriate to ride a horse in a cafe or mall? Maybe that has something to do with it. :p

I was in an open space, there is a lot of bare ground next to the cafe but I probably did not pull up in time, I was not riding through the cafe... as if!!!

That would be asking for aggravation...

I read in another forum thread a few months ago, that the banlines actually stop the banned avatar's chat from getting in. So if you were trying to ask them in normal chat they probably couldn't hear you. IMs get through of course.

I did wonder if that was the case. Thanks!

I fully understand what you are going through.. I have had that happen to me in two instances...Once I bought some items in a jewelry place...can't even remember the name of the place caused I blocked it out....the sim was having issues of some sort.. I really don't remember what.. but I did not get my items and the owner was present and I requested my money back and he "danced" around the subject of returning my money and then when it was all resolved and he had ACS there and I had my money.. he banned me from that jewelry store and another store he owns which is Woodshed (furniture).. Silly I thought.. cause if you are in business in SL to make money.. why ban someone because of a legitimate cripe.. rather ban those who come in your store and display griefing tendencies.. Hey.. fact is my partner and I spent alot of Lindens in his store... my partner, more than I...so I truly think that he lost out and not me.. besides.. if I truly wanted to go into his store because of something he might sell that no one else in SL sells (which I highly doubt!).. I would just go in as another avatar! Guess he didn't think of that! Have fun!!

If his items are no transfer, then your main account wouldn't be able to wear/use them.

As it's group owned land, the OP will need to contact the creator of the group to which it's deeded. :)

No matter how badly you think he (or his officer's) have behaved Belyndar, approach the situation as diplomatically as possible. Owning land in SL puts some people on a power trip (I'm not saying that's the case in this instance), and if you really *need* to access it, then you just have to massage their ego while biting your tongue. :p

No, I'm not bothered about going back I was just suprised by the action taken - I got banned from the Hare Krishna temple for changing my top - for a split second I was topless and that was all it took... both these incidents genuine mistakes but hey (second)life goes on...

You should have been given an explanation, out of courtesy. But aren't entitled one.

Oh dear. One should never do something as disrespectful as change clothes in someone's holy space. That's much worse than losing control of a horse and riding into a crowd in a cafe. You are new - you'll learn.

Because you were just born, it's possible that the cafe owner saw you as a potential brand new griefer account. As for the Hare Krishnas, they're probably sick and tired of people doing disrespectful things in their temple, and have run out of patience with naked noobs.

Neither owe you an explanation, because it is their land and they are free to restrict access as they see fit. But it is a nice thing to do, especially to a new person who honestly may have made a mistake. However, many people are suspicious of new accounts as potential griefers, and don't extend that courtesy.

i once dared to wear my really cute Sponge Bob costume that i bought. i was banned from two areas within 5 minutes (and 'THROWN') .... i never asked why. i figured if they were that snobby and uptight, i wouldn't bother shopping in their stores. and, unlike real life, i am a bigtime shopper in SL. i practically own one of everything. :D

In most places you won't get much of a response. And no they don't have to tell you.

Some places will tell you why you were banned. Caledon's covenant, for example, has Avatar Rights - you can find out why you were banned if it comes to that, as a basic 'right'.

It's not cool to leave people in the dark on such matters. Though obviously, if someone managed to get themselves banned (takes some effort!) it may be a response as simple as: "you were shooting everyone in sight - goodbye"

Dearly Darling,

Yes changing clothes in public is bad enough, but in a church, synagogue or temple that is a no-no.

The Shelter has a nice ladies room in the basement where you can change clothes in private. I also know that a few stores which cater to furry citizens also have changing rooms and very helpful staff.

Ever Yours,

Mrs. Showdog Tiger

Had a similar experience once. Left my avatar on a dancing pad and went afk. Came back to find it ejected. Thought it was a crash or something, went back, got ejected again and eventually a nasty note calling me a griefer. Next day talked to the security person: Someone had shot one of the dancers in the club and managed to pin the blame on my avatar (I had not marked it "away";). He didn't believe me, and muted me. At least I got an explanation. Even so, of course I never went back and never again recommended the club to any one else, as I had used to do. I suspect the itchy trigger finger has cost them other customers - they used to be regularly near the top of Popular Places and subsequently dropped way off.

No, they don't have to explain, but they are foolish if they don't - accidents do happen in SL.

BTW, you might want to check Banlink to see if you have been named on that website for shopowners and landowners as banned for griefing. It allows others who trust a member's judgment to also ban the person. If so, you can file a dispute. Go to:

does it cover anything else? i get a little annoyed at nudies (and other offensive sexual behavior, including persistent attempts to 'get to know me') on my land too, and it seems that the same people walk around doing it. i think there should be a list for that too.

I agree, I want to ride my horse (Yes more carefully in future) look at the pretty places, dance a bit, buy some nice clothes... but I do not wish to get close to a man with a stick on appendage and who won't take no for an answer, one of them let rip a stream of f's at me a couple of days ago because I wouldn't co-operate.

My split second 'flash' was an accident, lag has a lot to answer for!!!

Banlink was aimed at greifers, but does not distinguish among reasons for banning. Any member can post a ban against someone for any reason he cares to supply. The link abpve takes you to a page where you can find out if such a ban was listed against you, the details supplied, and an opportunity to dispute.

I have an objection against any Black List system

Sadly Linden lab intends on pursuing Black Lists further according to Dan Linden.

Black Lists will replace account banning.

Which sounds good on the surface, but if its easier to get on the Black List chains than to be banned - its not really better.

By not at least offering a reason why you have been banned, means they don't feel somehow accountable for their own actions, which strengthens their insecurities.

Having said that lol... some 'guy' came onto my land while I was building, didn't respond to my Hi, then undressed down to newcomer pants and kept asking if I liked his 'panties' over and over. I didn't reply to his IM's asking again if I liked his panties, when I ejected him and added him to the ban list... but did feel justified at the time.

AKK Ranch has lots of nice places to ride, as well as a steeple chase course (fun stuff, but sounds like your lag causes more issues than that sort of thing would allow)

As for taking off one shirt and putting on another, this might help you to avoid that situation in future:

Rather than taking off a piece of clothing and putting on another, just double click the new shirt (pants, etc) you want to wear in your inventory. If it's on a different layer (for instance the shirt you changed from was on undershirt, new shirt is on jacket layer) just right click your av and remove the layer of the first article you're changing from.

If this is how you did it, then I don't see why you were banned, since even with a slow rezz there's a haze on the av's body that indicates there is clothing there, just not fully rezzed.
