Ricky,

Change her password?

Wow. that was the most insightful and useless response I've ever seen. Thank you for your uncommonly keen input. If you have a few more useful comments to sell, we have a FREE bin you could dump them in. Maybe someone else will find them as delightful as we do.

I see this subject coming up alot as of late. To be honest I think SL needs to start taking some responsiblity on these issues and get some sort of system in place to investigate these claims. I mean if you have a credit card and you get charges that are not yours, they are going to find out who it was and go after them. SL needs to do the same thing with people hacking accounts, and taking Lidens and such. Its not like they were not on a computer with a IP and a hash and you know as well as I do that the Lindens track all that login information. Start nailing these people who do this crap.

A concerned friend. Beyond that its none of your high an mighty business. If you have something useful to add, then add it. Otherwise go be useless to someone else.

Let's see....

OP says: "money has been paid from my account, and I didn't do it"

Doesn't that make you think that maybe, just maybe, somebody else accessed her account? And perhaps changing the password might be prudent? Hmmmm? Ya think?

If you're so concerned, why didn't *you* tell her to change her password? And, no, her dog's name is *not* considered secure.

Yep. I would think this should be traceable. At the very least, even if we're dealing with a ring of thieves like what CC companies have to cope with, LL should be returning lost money and taking the hit for their own security flaws. Its adds an imperative for them to get it done right and builds confidence among there commercial clients. It's just good business.

Its just another example of how they are growning way to fast for their own good and they are not able to keep up with that and people are starting to take advantage of that fact.

On a more serious note, this is precisely the reason people should not keep large amounts of currency (L$ or US$) in their SL account. Within the TOS, LL can arbitrarily delete every last L$ you hold, and if they happened to zero out your US$ holdings, for most people it would be impractical to litigate.

See the documentation of the ongoing Bragg vs. Linden Lab et al. case for more detail of just how difficult such a matter could be.

True but to be honest all that is... Its a cop-out for SL not to take responsiblity for their own systems. They ride by the seat of their pants way too much. The good thing is... I thinks its going to change very soon. They are not going to have a choice because them turning a blind eye to everything is going to turn around a bite them by some of the goverments out there.

Personal attacks aren't warranted here. You don't know me, I don't know you, and at this point I can definitively say I don't much care to. You can call me a griefer if you wish, but saying it doesn't make it so.

The OP asked what she could do about her missing L$. I offered a suggestion for a first step of changing her password to reduce the chance of further loss, and you jumped all over me. As far as I can see, *you* haven't contributed anything to this thread other than flames!

Personally, I thought the suggestion she change her password was a really good piece of advice. It's not at all clear why that would upset you, or cause you to come in here and use vulgarity to attack somebody.

Look, there isn't much we CAN tell the OP other than to change her password and contact (CALL, do not use the Help Request or email!) Support.

So, as for what you can do beyond that? Hmm.. Nothing worthwhile to contribute, sorry.

Wow.

Ricky provided a perfectly good piece of advice, and the first thing that should have been done after the money was found missing. Your personal attack is unwarranted. You also accuse him of adding nothing good to the conversation, yet all you have proceeded to do is attack him and proivde NO useful dialogue to the conversation. I wag the forum finger of shame at you.

That being said, there are really only two scenarios that I can see this happening by:

1. The account is hacked and the hacker pays another avatar.
2. The account owner rezzes an object that they gave debit permissions to and it drained thier account.

If the case is #1, you have a case, and with the amount being about $300US, getting the police involved may be a prudent action.

If the case is #2, you have explicitly given permission to have your account debited, and you likely do not have a case, you were scammed.

Ricky's other suggestion not to keep much money in your account is a very good one. If you have a lot of L$, cash it out, and transfer any unneeded balances to PayPal immediately.

As a rule I cash out L$60,000 everytime I hit L$100,000 and keep only enough in my US$ balance to cover my fees.

Phoenix, I'm sorry for your loss. Please let us know if after you get in touch with this person, the money is returned. This is pretty scary for the rest of us because it may be a breach that has nothing to do with passwords.

If this is fraud, then the Lindens do need to know. Having an insecure system is not to their benefit and all their hoopla about getting rich in SL is going to bite them at some point.

If this is fraud/theft then the Lindens can ban the AV and the computer from SL leaving us all safer.

Although the Lindens don't appear to want a lot of responsibility doesn't mean that we can't hold them responsible anyway.

I agree with George Tanabe, however I don't agree with his temper. Especially the insults -- these are not your regular forums -- we must all be civil.

Ricky provided his advice in a careless manner, which many would find offensive. Take a close look at what he said, and imagine why someone would find that offensive. I can think of a number of reasons. Some could interpret it as a troll that wings by every thread, and slaps on a quick post, then leaves.

Now, if Ricky had said something like "Do you feel your password was hacked?", or even something like "Here is my thoughts... *enter thoughts here* ... But for now, change your password, since it may be possible your password was hacked.", then the outcome would've been much better received.

* This is text communication. We can't see your smile or hear your tone.

:)

---

If passwords are an issue, then people could blame SL for not enforcing security measures on password creation like you see on other sites that have secure areas.

Sites that ensure you have your password be no less than 6 characters, and must contain both letters and numbers, etc.

As for the forgot-password-verifiction question, I have never put this to use. I find it less secure actually if I fill in an answer for my Dog's name, or City I was born in.

Sorry for your loss

As I believe I have said before, when I played Project Entropia, I bought a SmartCard reader being sold by the company, so that every time I logged in, I could feel safe knowing nobody could ever steal my password. I suggest LL do the same. Sell us a reasonably priced SM reader with card made for use with SL. If a company like Mindark AB could do it, I see no reason why LL shouldn't.

I feel real sorry for your loss too, and we can only hope you get your money back, or even more important, that you won't have to feel unsecure about your account in the future. If I am to stretch it a bit, I would compare having your SL account possibly hacked with having someone breaking into your house IRL, meaning most people will feel unsecure and vulnerable when it's happened, and that is certainly not a good feeling.

Well at least LL didn't rip you off, like they did me

Back in December they disabled my account. I called, they said they didn't know why it happened. They re-enabled it, but what do you know, they kept my money. All L$20000 of it. I will never see that cashito again. If you look up LL on BBB, they are rated so low.

as it has been said before but i think this bears repeating....

DO NOT PARK MONEY IN SL

keep your balance low and your risk of theft is lower.

if they hack your account and use your CC on file then you can file a claim with your CC or BANK cuz they might do something, you know LL dont care bout what you lose or what they take away from you

Okay, how exactly is LL to know that your friend is not colluding with the alleged thief?
