Easy!

First, decide what type of weapon you want to build. Get an idea of the look and feel you want. Decide how you want it to operate, all that.

Then visit one of the many educational facilities in SL. NCI has tons of building classes to get you started. They also have scripting classes. Once you master the build and have a primset that you like, take some of the scripting classes so you can make the gun you build actually send out projectiles.

Remember though, no one in SL can get killed, but we can all AR if pushed by an object (such as a projectile) so if you're looking for a CounterStrike alternative, this isn't it. No willy-nilly NoobCannons here, please.

Can I check that there isn't a typo in your question and, rather than being a tyro martial enthusiast, you might be an animal lover, and wish to create herds of wildebeest to swarm across the vast grasslands of SL. Animated constructs are more difficult than weapons, you see.

Right. And there are completely different "damage" models used in different areas. Some use the built-in "damage" that causes the "killed" avatar to teleport to their home. Some use various open or proprietary scripted "combat systems" that operate on "safezone" regions where built-in damage isn't enabled, but require the participants to wear "combat meters" that record the scripted damage.

And the comment about SecondLife not being a CounterStrike alternative is very apt: The market for weapons and combat systems is small, fragmented, and not very profitable (by scripting standards, anyway), nor anywhere near the most challenging scripted content (the problem is just far too simple, and the only unique "advances" are temporary glitches that some folks stumble across). But if it's really the most interesting thing one can imagine doing, then by all means proceed; it's just that this kind of content is of interest to a relatively specialized subset of residents.

Many people feel that bees fed on cotton and buckewheat make the best honey, but I'm still fond of sage honey.

Betcha didn't know what I was gonna talk about, huh?

Your best advice was in the first response to this thread. Nothing more I could add to that, really.

That's the attitude. Nothing like being a jackass to get your questions answered.

Check post number two. The answer is you decide what kind of gun to build, learn to build, build it, then learn to script, write a script that makes it work and stick the script in the gun you built. Presto - you have a gun. If you thought someone was going to magically imbue you with the power to make guns appear out of thin air, you were wrong. You can magically make boxes and cylinders and the like appear. It's up to you to turn them into whatever you want.

It just annoys me when people come in here, get an answer to their question and then act like we're a bunch of animals and deserve no respect at all.

First, there is a content creation subforum where this question is more appropriately placed. Try Building Tips and Scripting Tips.

Second, get a sense of humor. Pep was only joking around.

Third, to echo what Trout said, don't get pissy when people are giving you answers to your questions.

There's absolutely no chance of that happening. As long as you're coming on here and acting like a jerk to people who are trying to help, I'm going to comment.

Besides, smart elike remarks are my specialty. That and hitting the "Shift" key at the beginning of sentences and adding periods to the end. (See what I did there?)

Please explain why I shouldn't rent my own stall in a "high traffic" mall, and get all the income myself?
I assume you have some massive marketing or franchise going on, and it would be interesting to hear about it before joining.

Boys, boys...

Warpig, as you've been told, weapons making is rather an arcane specialty. A good gun involves two areas of creativity...object creation and scripting. Plus, possibly, some animation.

Take the .45 automatic that I often wear. This gun consists of three parts...a holstered version of the gun, a version that is worn as a hand attachment, and a HUD to control the system. Both the holstered version and the handheld pistol have two versions. The holstered version appears normally with the gun in the holster. When the gun is drawn (by clicking the HUD or chatting "draw";) the holster appears empty, and the handheld pistol, which is normally transparent, becomes visible.

At the same time, my avatar takes up a "ready" position.

When I enter mouselook to aim the gun, my av takes a firing stance.

Creating a realistic LOOKING pistol involves manipulating very small prims, just like creating fine jewelry. So check in the building forum for hints and tips. HINT: search on "tiny prims" or "tortured prims".

Creating the poses for the avatar involves animation. So look in the Animation forum for how to get started on that.

The key to getting all the parts to work together is scripting. You need a script to control the drawing and holstering. A script to fire the weapon (triggering animation and sound effects, for example). Scripts to create the bullets, and send them to their target. There was a post just today in the scripting forum about guns.

If you want to pick the brains of someone who is very good at this specialty, I suggest you look up Gunslinger Kurosawa in world and strike up a conversation. I have no idea if he takes on apprentices, gives lessons, or is even willing to discuss his trade secrets...but I do know that I love the weapons he makes.
