I hope you are a quick reader though. These forums will close next Tuesday.

hey i literally just logged on for the first time about 15 minutes ago, and i will be honost. I am completely lost on what to do lol. Any tips for a very new player? Hey Sly! Welcome to SL, and to the SL Forums. In one sense, this is sort of the wrong place, in that this forum is going to be closed down permanently on Tuesday. So what you will see here in posts is a great deal of angst. On the other hand, everyone here is VERY happy to see and greet a new resident to SL, and will go out of his or her way to help out. Sooooo . . . tips. What have you come to SL for? What do you want to do here? There is everything from shopping, to virtual museums, live music, socializing areas, role playing, historical recreations, art installations and galleries . . . and, um, other stuff. What interests you? Do you have particular questions we might help with? _____________________

If you haven't completed the basics (learning how to walk & talk, and dress yourself), go to Help Island Public (a landmark is in the library section of your inventory) and take the tutorials.
If you've got all that down, it's time to see what the big deal is about. I would recommend looking at the showcase in search to get some ideas of what people make in Second Life, and things to do. I highly recommend visiting Decay, and East of Odyssey. In wandering the world, you will encounter lots of avatars that quite frankly look better than you do. You can go shopping for new clothing, skins and shapes. I'd read the forums here to find people's recommendations. But first, read the sticky for the newly born. If you have questions, please let us know. There's only a week left in this forum and the new outlet isn't all that hot. _____________________

Well honostly i heard about this game through a T.V. show and i usually play games like WoW. But i am getting very tired of the same old thing, so i decided to try something new. As for what interests me, music, friends, ect. Ok, cool! The first thing you should probably recognize is that, unlike WoW, SL is not a "game": there are no "goals" here. Rather, it is an open platform to create and experience. That said, there are games, RP and otherwise, to play within SL. One place to start might be this thread: /327/5c/360445/1.html For music and clubs, your best bet is to search in-world for a particular type of music or club, or check the Events page: https://secure-web29.secondlife.com/my/community/events/ There is also, I think, a group devoted to live music that posts shows in-world. There are lots of different places to find people to hang out with, although finding them can sometimes seem a chore. Try searching in-world under "coffee house" or "hangout." One good place is the Forum Hangout (for which I don't, unfortunately, have a SLURL); you can find this again with an in-world search. Also, check out the "Destinations" page: http://secondlife.com/destinations?lang=en-US Hope this helps a bit! You'll need to do some exploring to find something that is exactly what you want, but sometimes exploring is the best part of the process! _____________________

Oops, repeating information already posted.
I would recommend you check out one of the places especially for new people. I know that when I started, 'The Shelter' in the sim Isabel was very helpful to me. SLurl--click on this and then on Teleport: _____________________

Yes, the Shelter is a great place to meet other new people and to get help.
How daft am I to not recommend New Citizens, Inc. (NCI) in Kuula. _____________________

Scylla hinted at it, but the major thing to point out is that *everything* you see; clothes, buildings, vehicles and all, are made by other residents.
In other words: You can build and script, creating your own things entirely from scratch, and that is what hooked me on SL. If that catches your fancy, find a friendly "sandbox"; a public place with room for building, and play around, and give a shout here for good resources and introductions to that. (Though I may as well mention the Ivory Tower and the Particle Laboratory now, since those *will* be come up anyway ![]() |

On the basis of the very few posts you have made here you will fit in very well. Pep (Lousy spelling, inability to find the shift key . . . I'm just waiting for your claim to be dyslexic, or to ask how you can kill people and have sex with them.) Haha! Our little joke . . . We also have this kind of scripted bot that we affectionately call "Pep." We trundle him out on occasion, and have him make snide and unwelcoming comments to people whose only real fault is that they took the chance of appealing for advice and help to others. Really, we just have him post for a lark, trusting that those who post here will recognize that, in truth, the vast majority of residents in SL are not obnoxious and judgmental, and delight in helping new people discover what a really cool place this can be. (PS. If our Pep bot annoys you, you can always put him on "Ignore" by going to the "User CP" feature at the top left of your forum screen. Not everyone finds him as utterly hilarious as I do. ![]() _____________________

Pep (Lousy spelling, inability to find the shift key . . . I'm just waiting for your claim to be dyslexic, or to ask how you can kill people and have sex with them.) The lack of perspicacity, an inability to recognise the obvious, and a vacuum in the part of the brain where a sense of humour normally exists is what usually distinguishes feminists, as she exempifies. Pep (sees through solid walls.) Glass houses anyone? |

I was just demonstrating that someone who feels so comfortable in stereotyping another based on their spelling should really be more careful when writing the word exempifies (sic). |

WHAT!
![]() Pep made a spelling/typing mistake? Holy cow, I guess the fact that these forums will be closing soon doesn't matter now. Surely the world will be imploding any moment now. ![]() _____________________
