The object 'OpenCollar - 3.301' has sent you a message from Second Life: "slave" has run away! = OpenCollar - 3.301 is owned by "slave" = http://slurl.com/secondlife/Fetish%20Network/238/227/28 I assume that the slave has dumped her collar somehow, and then de-friended me (fine, lol). But could someone explain the nuances of this? The collar was locked etc. I know she could use a non-RLV to get it off etc. The slurl was for the openCollar temple... But what else should I know?

You're going to have to wash your own feet now . . . Pep ( . . . at least until you can recruit a replacement. )

From: Domitan Redenblack ...... But what else should I know? How to keep a slave happy and entertained enough so that they don't click Reset from the collar menu -- or type /1XXrunaway You forgot parity of esteem maybe?

OK, a semi-serious answer for you. Slaves run away all the time in SL. It's because they often enter into arrangements without much thought or acceptance of responsibility. They get bored an just move on. Perhaps with that avatar, perhaps another. So learn to screen better, or just get used to it.

If this was a proprietary collar, there'd be a merchant you could go to for tech support. Alas, you chose open source... so there is not. You get what you pay for.

Ah well, I can't help with Open Collar. I have only seen the menus once, and it looked like a huge mess.

Did the person have to come into SL with a not RLV to get it off? When she took it off, even without RLV, the collar sent me a message? What other technical nuances are there? Yes, they probably had to access SL with some client other than an RLV enabled one. So the standard LL client would do, and they just detach the collar like any other attachment. The RLV client prevents detaching a "locked" attachment, if the person attempting the detach is not the "owner" of the collar. But there is no such code in normal clients, so detaching it just sends a message saying they "ran away". With an RLV-enabled client, such as the original Restrained Life, and I think with Emerald and some others, the slave would not be permitted to remove a locked collar. Perhaps she could in a no-script area, but I think not. At any rate, when a collar scripted with a "locked" mode is removed, it usually will send a message to the currently registered "owner" of the person wearing the collar. Collars that don't rely on RLV enhancements often send a similar message if the wearer resets the scripts in the collar, wiping out the Owner list.

But what else should I know? We have her safely in our care, now Domitan. She's been given a new name and a new identity under the Escaped Slave Protection Programme. FREEDOM TO SLAVES!!!! NO KAJIRAE LEFT BEHIND!!

I agree with Love on this one take more time at the start and you wont get these messages cause you wont collar ppl who have little understanding. If communications were open she could tell you she was not happy

No need to relog or anything.

Aren't those last two lines appended by SL, indicating that the object sending the message was the collar itself (not just the name matched, but the owner), while the object was at that location? If so, doesn't it seem a lot of effort for a slave to first go to the OpenCollar "temple" to run away? Which is to say: are we sure this wasn't some upgrade or something? Unless the OpenCollar Temple is a station on the underground railroad, I can't figure out why else the message should come from that location.

Unless the OpenCollar Temple is a station on the underground railroad, I can't figure out why else the message should come from that location. I'm not in world to check, but I think the OC uses http_in and http_out to keep settings on an external database, with the Temple acting as main in-world server. It would make sense for the server, rather than the collar itself, to send the message, to my mind, otherwise you'd have irate Masters and Mistresses tp-ing to their erstwhile slave's last location to remonstrate with her or him. I agree it might mean she's unlocked it herself to update it, but I'd have thought in that case you would contract your Master to tell him that's what had happened -- most of us would ask first, of course, before removing our collars.

Yeah, I agree with the design principle... in fact, I hemmed and hawwed a long time, trying to dream up how I'd approach the problem, and I'm pretty sure I'd use a separate in-world server, too. But what has me puzzled is the message: it seems to come from an object named like a collar, and most significantly, owned by the slave. Assuming that text is created automatically by SL as it's sending the object IM, then it seems to me that it must be coming from the collar itself, at that location.

It's sent by the collar itself: since no matter what different opencollar she'd wear it would retrieve the old owner it's possible she just went to the opencollar HQ to ask people how she could clear it. And I just realized there's very likely a sneaky low-tech way (ie no commenting out the llInstantMessage) to clear the owner without them getting notified about it .

I was mistaken..I have just tested it with an alt, and it is, indeed, sent by the collar.

There's nothing about unfriending in the message, so check your friend list. As others have said, the message is probably from resetting the list of owners. This is done using the safeword featue. The real nuance is that you shouldn't be using a collar with a slave unless you really understand how the collar works. The best way is probably to be a sub yourself for an experienced master, but if you don't want to do that, then create an alt for yourself. Try out everything - and I mean everything - with the collar. The slave is trusting you not only to not exceed whatever boundaries you have in your relationship, but also to not mess up due to technical ignorance. For example, with RLV, you can force a slave to TP merely by offering a teleport. If you're not aware that it's automatic, and you're in the habit of offering a TP to people assuming they'll wait until they're dressed appropriately before responding, you could wind up with an embarrassing situation.
