Here's the "Second Life Question" I want answered.

What blind fashionably-retarded incompetent backwards reporter-wannabe composed the Metaverse-Messenger's survey?

The Metaverse-Messenger has released their annual "favorites" survey.

You can see the survey here:
http://www.metaversemessenger.com/webpoll/public/survey.php?name=bestofsl2006

But here are some examples:

* Best Designer - Women's Clothing
------------------------------------------
- Toast Bard
- Sensual Designs

* Best Female Avatar Skins
-------------------------------
- Toast Bard
- Gala Phoenix
- Sensual Designs

And my personal favorite:

* Best SL Publication
------------------------
- The Metaverse Messenger
- SecondStyle Magazine

I don't understand these options. These are the most ridiculous options for "favorites" I have ever seen.
First of all, La Cadre and Sensual Casanova is in every category. (I'd rather wear used garbage bags).

Second, The list of options make no sense at all! How can you compare Toast with Gala with Sensual Casanova? And where's are the skins by Naughty, Nomine, Nora, Celestial Studios, Canimal, Nylon Outfiiters, Max, Chip Midnight, I can go on forever!

The entire list is dominated by Anime (Nakama, Kin Keiko, eyes by Neph..) & Sensual Casanova. What blind fan wrote this survey?? The idea of these people getting awards based on that survey is LAUGHABLE!

It's recently been made aware to me through interaction with the person who thinks he is in "charge" of MM that he is in fact a juvenile ass-hat, so this doesn't surprise me.

I note there are also only two choices for 'best third party forum' when there are something like 20-30 options.

Coco's Cottages is also an obvious addition to the "prefab houses" category.

Someone clearly didn't do any research, or ask for nominations; and as such I will treat the survey with the contempt it deserves for lack of options and refuse to participate. I am sure I am not alone with the thought that I could have done a better job. I note that the person compiling the survey did not put their name to it either.

I must agree, it seems to me someone chose their friends as alot of those people frequent the same cliques. With the exception of a few designers, I am confused on this list as well. I can think of many many other people who should have been included in the list, but I don't shop by lists and really could care less about 'surveys' as 99.9999% of them are laughable and biased.

Katt Kongo is in charge of MM - editor in chief. I met her at SLCC, and she's wonderful. I believe these surveys are typically done by nomations. Try to get community involvement in a process like that isn't easy; we had a whale of a time trying to get people to submit for the SLCC Design Expo, for example.

So while I can't answer the question directly, that would be my best guess. I enjoy reading the Messenger every week and think it's a cool thing the team is putting together. Let's not forget the budget and distribution they're working with, versus a real-world newspaper!

Regards,

-Flip

Firstly take out all the advertising. How many pages of copy are left?

Secondly, I assume articles are paid for by advertisers.

Thirdly, dtp software isn't complicated to use.

Fourthly, there is a team of writers who make the articles; no doubt some weeks they have more than they need, which go on to the next week.

Fifth, the only real cost is hosting and bandwidth. Some of that may be paid for out of the advertising costs converted on Lindex.

Sixth, it comes out once a week, not daily.

Seventh, there is no distribution network - you upload a PDF to the website, and let people download it.

Whilst I do indeed read the MM from time to time, I'm not entirely sure your glowing praise of its wonderfulness is 100% justified. I am, however, aware that there was a paper issue given out at the SLCC, so I understand loyalty to your supporters.

stuff

Thanks for the limited and knowledge-free version of how Katt puts the paper together.

I will mention that the real cost is time.

Like many of who freely give our time/money/resources in support of things to better the community, it's hardly right to complain about it when you're doing it by choice.

If it's too much like hard work, people should walk away from it, or get on with it.

Uhmmm well, this list does seem rather odd... double so for me seeing i somehow made it there and if it wasn't for thread in SC that linked to here, i wouldn't even know such list is being made. Not to mention there's plenty people out there who *are* actually good at scripting and should be there, instead o.O;

but maybe it's just some sort of work in progress list and it'll be fleshed out with way more options in each category, before it goes public? ^^;;

That does seem a rather bizarre selection. Does anyone know how the nominations were reached?

I think if they'd used a friends list for nominations Dazzle would have made it in there--Ginny is good friends with Katt. I think they went with nominations and then didn't really advertise they were taking nominations. That's all I can think happened :shrug:

And this is a prime example why 9 out of 10 doctors prefer <drug x> when the only other choice is a full lobotomy.

The sad thing is, like in real life, I am sure the end reader will take it as fact.

As I wrote at another place:

I am sure that next time we see the survey it will be a lot A LOT - more groups and a LOT - LOT - LOT - more people named.. than the usual.. few..

...SL are full of wonderful people that create so many fantastic things.. we can for sure fill a messenger with them..

PS The 2005 winners are to find at the M2 home page - Archive. MM-2005-09-20.pdf

Not commenting about the quality of the nominations themselves (it's not my place to, being a designer myself), but i'm curious about something:
Between the ones complaining here about the quality of the nominations, is there anyone that actually bothered to go and send in nominations with OTHER names?
Because you know, nominations don't really appear by themselves from thin air.

Does anyone recall being asked for nominations, whether it's here or on the MM?
