I watched a tutorial on uTube on Clothing design and got to Part 3 and it discusses overlay layering and fake baking. Could someone or has someone done a step by step tutorial on that process? If so I am in desperate need of that process on Photoshop CS3 as I am folloiwng that tutorial and am stumped. it is at this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9TWSQ5zM1w&feature=related. Could someone please listen and watch this and explain this to me in layman's terms to a photoshop learner so as I can understand please????? Thank you Fantasia Habilis

You may want to try the texturing forum.

while I can't give you a tutorial, I can help you learning wise to understand what it means...
baking is the proccess of adding shadows and hilights to a texture that is applied to a 3d figure. at it's simplest you load your design onan sl figure, set up the lighting, and press a button (mostly) which applies that lighting to the texture, showing all those nice shadows for wrinkles and curves...
I'll assume fake baking is similar but not as advanced in effect, using filters/plugins to apply the shadowing to a patch of the texture, without actually getting into the 3d model it will be applied to... possibly using the shading/hilight guides in the SL directory as a template
anything more indepth than that and you'll need to follow HoneyBear's suggestion

in a nutshell a fake bake is when folks draw in the wrinkles, highlights etc, right on the same template they are using to create the texture
I guess they call it fake baking because of what Void said, baking is when you use a 3d program to apply the lighting effect
whereas faking that bake is to apply them by hand

I am so clueless on making clothes and textures in general, I was reading the thread title and trying to figure out where Betty Crocker fit into clothing design.

LOL littleme
I had a look at the tutorial linked above very in depth tutorial, however the person who made it does assume the listener/watcher has some knowledge of photoshop heh
the fakebake they are refering to is the overlay layer (the grey one with all the shading and highlights) which they made then used in photoshop
if you check the texturing forum, there are some people who have linked to some fakebakes they offer for free which are extremely helpful

"Fake Bake"... Not as hard as it sounds.
10-07-2008 07:45
Ok... This forum entry is very well timed- for me at least! I use Abu Nasu's "RGB Theta" filter for Photoshop in conjunction with Chips Midnight's Normal Maps every time I want to bake a faux lighting effect on the avatar mesh. I got it from here ages ago, and it is my ALL TIME FAVOURITE- MOST COOLEST Photoshop *cheat* I've ever come across! Original link: /109/eb/155651/1.htmlChip's Re-Uploaded Normal Maps: /109/eb/155651/1.html#post1364321Abu's RGB Theta Filter: http://tech-slop.serveit.org/wiki/index.php?title=RGB_ThetaAnd the "good timing" comes because I've just done a basic walk through on how to use it on my tutorial-ish blog. I've saved my outcomes as a greyscale jpeg too, so if you're unable to use the filter for some reason (either not using Photoshop, or using a different OS to Windows), you can still save my outcomes for your own use. RGB Theta- Photoshop plug-in for SL “Fake Bake”: http://mistressofdesign.wordpress.com/2008/10/07/rgb-theta-photoshop-plug-in-for-sl-fake-bake/Hope that helped!

It's good to know that people are getting some use out of Abu's genius filter. I was really surprised that it didn't generate more excitement when he created it, but it was kinda buried in that thread so a lot of people probably missed it.

OMG!!! Heart palpitations!

OMG, OMG, OMG! Hi Chip!!! I can remember when the original thread started, and evolved into... well... utter COOLNESS! I just sat there AMAZED at what you could do, all WITHIN Photoshop! The original post may have gone un-noticed because it started as one thing (your topography guides) and evolved in to something even greater (Abu's rocking filter)! I definately agree that post deserved more attention, maybe even a STICKY! RGB Theta... Normal Maps... not words people search for. Fake bake- bound to get hits! Oh well, almost two years later- let's hope the next generation can make more use of such an amazing collaboration, even if they have to find it through other posts that re-direct them to what they really want. *Giggles* I'm still chuffed that Chip Midnight has read one of my tutorials! Weeeeeee!

hehe, thanks Claire Abu has another truly amazing PS filter for skin and clothing makers that people should check out (which like his lighting filter put my chin right on the floor in utter amazement). It can be found here: http://tech-slop.serveit.org/wiki/index.php?title=Multi_Chan_Hax

Dude! THAT THING MADE MY EYES POP OUT! *giggles*
Already posted about it on my blog too! LOL! Multi Chan Hax is like... the juiciest thing I've found this year! I know I am steering away from the original question but, but, but!!! That thing... that filter... if you've ever wanted a DIFFERENT UV to work with- YOU GET IT RIGHT THERE!!! That's basically what it does O.o .
I already offered Abu my first born when I found Multi Chan Hax last week (I expect he would prefer beer or wine though). That filter is on the list of "guides to write up" for my "Random Ramblings" blog as well. I want to live in his head for a weekend damnit! He just seems to think totally out of the box. Fantastic stuff!

*grins at HoneyBear* Those are the shadow maps I did in Blender, totally easy peasy to make, but such a huge help. I usually set them to color to alpha (at least that's what it's called in GIMP >.< and then adjust the transparancy until it looks right. That, and you can use them as a displacement map. (again, GIMP term, so I'm not sure what it is in PS). So that offests whatever clothing texture you are using to conform to the shadow map shape. Eventually I'll get off me tukas and bake the male shape shadows too.

I hope to use them some day. I screwed up an installation of PS CS3 and since then, my computer won't let me load PS 7. PS Elements is on there, but it's a total waste of time for me, as the newest version is so "photo-editing" oriented, that for graphics work, it's a pain in the rear. Adobe won't help me get the failed PS CS3 installation off, so I'm just kind of screwed right now

Did that...didn't work, but thanks for looking for it. A friend said I need to go into my registry and remove any and all references to Adobe or CS3. But just the thought gives me a serious case of upset stomach. I can just imagine screwing it up.

Just to chime in with my two coppers i have always hated the term "fake baking" and thought it should be along the lines of "manual baking".

It really shouldn't be called baking at all unless you're actually baking textures in a 3d app (or Abu's plugin). If you're painting shadows and highlights in a paint program, you're just painting.

Fake Baking
10-07-2008 19:20
Well back to my original question....we have kinda gotten away what my original post was here ((. I am so totally totally lost here. I Have followed that link on that tutorial on uTube to the letter on Part 1, 2 and now 3 till I got to this "baking" part of it. To get the affect I need to have the totally nude avatar look for the shadowing and highlights behind the layered one I have been working on thusfar up to the part of putting the frog knots on I am SO LOST. PLEASE SOMEONE make this clear as to how I get this part done to accomplish what I need to accomplish at this point in my tutorial Fantasia

Fantasia, did you happen to take a look at my tutorial entry on my blog, about fake bakes? I know this question got a lot of attention, so perhaps you've skimmed through a few of the replies (kick me- I got excited with Chip about Abu's cool filters- hehehehe). A "fake bake" is a term used for creating the 3 dimensional shading maps based upon the avatar figures. For the most part it is done using 3D programs (Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Lightwave... loads of them can do it). BUT... The final outcome is all you really need. All you really want, is the final outcome. That greyscale layer. Nothing more. Don't pull your hair out trying to make it yourself. If you want to use Abu's filter, or even if you just want to save the pre-made "fake bakes", please take a look at my tutorial. It explains what it does, how to get it working, then how to apply it to your designs. I'm sorry I partly hi-jacked this thread earlier, but I hope you do find the information useful, if you ever get around to reading it. RGB Theta Plugin for FAKE BAKE in SL: http://mistressofdesign.wordpress.com/2008/10/07/rgb-theta-photoshop-plug-in-for-sl-fake-bake/Take a look there. It sort of explains how to make one, as well as how to apply it (what layer blend mode you can use etc). It's not a *step-by-step* start to finish project, but it *is* what you're after... hopefully I've even posted finished greyscale jpegs for NON Photoshop users to download and do whatever they wish with.

Definitely something I need to save and re-read this thread. I don't get the photoshop terms or make it to texturing forum as often as I should. Thanks to orginal poster, I am needing to read this over when I have more time. Hopefully you'll find the answers, sometimes it's not clear cut answer you got to do some research and experiments, please don't panic, take it easy, keep practicing and you're not alone in your confusion often I am so lost I wouldn't understand if someone was giving me the answers to certain question and often because I am learning I don't always say the questions in way people understand who do this sort of thing. Sometimes people don't answer either even in texturing forum as fast as we like with the correct answer we are looking for but it because there is only handful who often get it and they got lives second and first to attend too and sometimes have limited time to answer.
