From: 3Ring Binder gotcha. how 'bout this. i'll hold your hand and we'll walk through the porthole together. Thanks. I appreciate the hand holding offer Now all we have to do is skip to where the update is if I can locate it. LOL I heard monday there was optional update. Do you know where it is? I have searched where I thought it would be but can't seem to locate it.

From: Kitty Barnett I wish I could be optimistic, but it probably just opens the door to a whole new variety of bugs when an old client has to talk with a new sim, or a new client with an old sim, or anything in between. This is a far more complicated situation than simply requiring that everything has to be the same version, and LL can't even make the simpler situation work properly. And of course the majority of people never update if they're not required to. Anyone that runs a bot will be very pleased since they won't have to tinker with it anymore after a mandatory update and can just keep it running. I think just the opposite. They can just make whatever "add-ons" and features compatible with the current version, and test it over and over before implementation, which should result in LESS bugs. Barreling through all these versions of the Client always brings "new"/recurring bugs, because of the short amount of testing time, among other things. Personally I doubt there will be "NO MORE" updates, *ever*...because Graphics will become outdated, etc.

That's not a bad idea at all. From: Hugsy Penguin One thing the Lindens might want to do is add an LSL function which grabs the version of an avatar's viewer. Vendors could be upgraded to not allow a transaction if the buyer has the wrong version.

The Wednesday viewer update is postponed a fortnight. The optional one should be on downloads though and Beta Grid running of course.

From: Zaphod Kotobide That's not a bad idea at all. I thought something like that would be handy a while back when they made the open source client. So you could force all gorean kajiras to be running the "master gets all my L$" client if they want to be in the gor sims. Handy stuff like that. And then people could ban off libsl clients from their land too

From: Darien Caldwell Great, so does that mean I have to deal with customers whose transactions fail because they choose to stick with a faulty client? I can see it going something like this: Customer: "I paid 300L for my widget and I never received it." Me: "What version of the client do you have?" Customer: <checks> "Version from 3 updates ago." Me: "Oh thats the one that doesn't handle fund transfers correctly. You should upgrade." Customer: "Oh well I don't want to because I heard that one has <insert feature here>, and I don't want that." Me: <sighs and shakes her head> As if selling in SL wasn't hard enough... <contemplates a sign stating no refunds if not using the latest client.> LOL.. I forsee a time when shops have signs on the doors 'We support versions 1.17.01 & 1.8.002 & 20.0056.98 Client updates only in the shop'

From: Raudf Fox It'd be really great if you could pick and choose what features you really want in the first place. Don't want that voice? Leave it unclicked and it won't download. Yes!

Having read a book once about software development (or was it salad construction?) "releasing feature patches" typically requires a "stable base" first. Ergo, this is a swell idea, sure to work, and can be well topped with a gorgonzola dressing.
