Hi there - howcome SOME people seem to have contravened the rule that classified ads within SL cannot start with punctuation (eg. ! * etc.) or a blank space?

I find this a bit strange and suspicious.

Maybe it's from the recent changes in the way cads work, they forgot to code that in?

I saw a commercial for an above-ground pool. It was thirty seconds long. You know why? Because that's the maximum amount of time you can depict yourself having fun in an above-ground pool - M.H.

You know, I'm sick of following my dreams, man. I'm just going to ask where they're going and hook up with 'em later. - M.H.

Yes, Semolina. If I try to start my ad with punctuation I get an error msg saying its not alllowed and it must start with a letter or number and yet there are several businesses at the top of the list starting with ! * or a full stop (period for my American friends :-)

Perhaps the classified format is enforced on client side only, meaning someone who uses library like libsl can post whatever they want?

If that's the case you can likely expect "classifieds god mode" program being sold on slEx and other places soon :s

Only reasons I can think of is that it's noticeable and that punctuation goes before the alphabet in alphabetical order. ;)

Could this possibly have something to do with the keyboard language in use?

Can people use ASCII characters inside SL? If they can, that may be it... they're using the ASCII (!) instead of the keyboard (!)

If you can't figure it out, then I suggest you start making aardvarks to advertise & sell.

In the ABOUT LAND tab, just add whatever u want to, to the NAME box and people do it for the reasons you have said as it puts u at the top of an alphabetical list AFAIK, it wont work for classifieds as those placings are purchased.

I stand to be corrected tho, if im wrong ;)

lol.

The problem with that is that some joker is bound to come along and start manufacturing *!aardvarks for sale. Then we're back to square one.

I think if you look carefully, it looks as if they are starting names with blank spaces, but actually the names are like "0___________FUN BUSINESS NAME". (The BB software won't let me put actual sequential space.)

As I guess, it's possible they're ads that have been in place since a previous version where this limit wasn't enforced, and have just been auto-renewed since then.

are you blind??

just do a search for clothes or casino or camping!!!

ads are like this:

for clothes - under the 'all' tab - top listing is this:

_______________________0 The promised land
<the ___ means blank space!>

for casino - top listing is this:

________________________________casino

loads of them - all starting with blank spaces or with punctuation.

It's just not fair!

I checked again and you are right. Many put a zero before all the leading spaces but some have nothing in front but space.

I think you've reached the end of usefulness of bumping this thread here - you might like to ask on Linden Answers or raise it as a Bug Report.

Could a mod maybe lock this thread? Not that anything wrong is going on here, but it would prevent the repeated bumping of a thread nobody is interested in.

Doesn't look like it - Personally I always scroll past any names with any sort of leading spaces. But I think it's safe to say that there's no point in bumping this thread in the hopes that the Lindens will say "Ooooooooooo look! This thread's been bumped! Let's go to work and fix things!"
