Ok, tonight i was supposed to teach my second class for the NCI... I couldn't stay logged into SL for more than two minutes without my PC crashing. I managed to apologise to the students and see that a replacement teacher had taken over before giving up in disgust. I thought it was my pc, but then found that so long as i didn't go into SL, i was fine.

So what good times did SL crashes wreck for you? Weddings? Parties? relationships?

imogen

(PS yes, i tried reducing my preferences down to the lowest of the low settings... I guess i need a new spec pc for the latest upgrade.. sigh)

It's not your fault alot of peoples are having issues.
the goal is SL is to do something nice without the technicalities of SL ruining that occasion, or objective. There will be many failed occasions in comparison to smoothly running ones that is for sure.

If not being able to get INTO Second Life ruins a relationship for you, then I would suggest you spend a little less time in Second Life...

Someone posted on another forum statistics about the amount of Ls sold last month and month to date. Its rather eye-opening. Last month was like 159,000,000 total and so far to date its right at 15,000,000. Folks, we're almost 1/3 of the way into August and they havent even hit 10% of last months L sales. That doesnt bode well for the economic stability of SL. (as in LL may find themselves in a huge money crunch if they arent careful)

For the last two weeks, my partner was not able to stay logged into SL for more than a few seconds without crashing, while every other program on his pc ran fine. He tested everything on his pc that he could possibly think of, tested his internet connection, uninstalled and reinstalled SL more times than I can count, tried various versions of the Nicholaz veiwer.... nothing helped.... until he replaced his ATI graphics card with an Nvidia. I know its common knowledge that SL doesn't like ATI, but still he ran it with no problems whatsoever until a couple of weeks ago.

I crashed yesterday when I was naked and tweaking my appearance in the safety of my place. When I tryed to relog SL could not make contact with my home and rezzed me in another region.I rezzed naked in the middle of a dance club with about 10 other dancing around me.I got out of the building as quickly as possible and clothed.Felt like a streaker :)

I may not be a very good indicator, but as far as the 0.2% of the grid I keep an eye on is doing, it's basically stable-to-good as far as economics goes. No major changes - we are talking about a community of roughly 500+ with maybe 10,000 visitors a week of traffic.

I was thinking of SL relationships Midnight. I imagine that when someone says 'see you tomorrow' and then doesn't arrive, that can put pressure on such a relationship, particularly if the other party is having no trouble getting in-world.

I have lost track of all the times this happened to me. I don't bother to remember them in detail anymore. So many things about SL that disrupt enjoying it these days.

Though for me, not getting into the grid really doesn't ruin anything close to the importance of teaching a class. There's very little prep-work involved in some random spur-of-the-moment build (e.g. giant solitaire hand and steaming cup of coffee).

I'd venture to guess that 90% of the resident population has been having severe issues here & there -- if not consistently -- lately (please note, I did not say "I'll bet"!)

As for my experiences with lag causing issues, they vary from the ridiculous to the sublime. I almost wish I knew in advance which nights would cause everyone to walk as though they're in water up to their necks and float off when they jump; I'd build a space station :D

Yes, i am running an ATI card, and thats what i am thinking is causing the trouble. A friend who is more computer savvy than me agrees, and i am getting errors in the event log that point the same way. I am wondering now if its worth investing in an Nvidia card as most people seem to say they are finding this works best for SL.

I just hate letting people down, having made commitments when all was well, which i cannot fulfill in the current circumstances.

As you say happened with your friend, I had no troubles until a couple of weeks ago... but it has become worse in the last few days. The strange thing is, that sometimes i can log in fine for hours on end... then other times i crash to the blue screen of death as soon as i boot up SL. I do sometimes get blue screen crashes when not running SL though.

Damn i wish i was more techie... i was once, when everything was simpler..

Any SL veteran should know how SL can keep any given person fits, so if they don't understand that happening. maybe they aren' worth being involved, plus at least in my case, any SL appointments are always subject to RL, and all my friends know that. I try to leave a message if possible beforehand if I have access to a computer, but sometimes it isn't possible.

I just tested this ATI thing here on a older rig I got under my desk. It still has a ATI 9800 PRO with 256MB ram in it. And Sl runs fine on it. Driver version is 6.14.0010.6648 dated 12.October.2006.

Guaranteed that any weddings etc are when the problems are likely to happen.

/me looks at the 18th and 23rd of August as probably the next whackouts.

I think it's safe to say that you only remember the things that got ruined so well (you generically as people, not Imogen) because the fact they got ruined highlights them. My partner's birthday got screwed up by SL problems but not half as badly as RL intrusions on my side did to the place I went to spend time with him.

/me ponders a birthday on AA instead and shudders.

On the other hand, when someone tells me they will see me tomorrow and doesn't, I do remember that there are grid-wide issues and tend to give the person the benefit of the doubt.

I attended a wedding Sunday in SL. After the vows, the bride and groom kissed, and he crashed and went missing for 10 minutes or so, leaving his bride at the alter. Must have been one hell of a kiss. Fortunatly he was able to relog and the wedding reception commenced.

At my own SL wedding, our entire private island crashed, kicking everybody off. When we got back on, I had to go around deleting all 50-odd fireworks generators that my partner had put down, LOL!

ATI or Nvidia, I've tried them both in the same machine and SL still crashes very nicely thank you... :D

I've gotten so used to being 'disconnected' that if I met a nice lady in a club and we were chatting each other up that I'd start with a disclaimer that if for some reason I unexpectedly left, it was me crashing out and that I'd be back.
Luckily now I no longer need to explain as my partner knows that all too well. ;)

Silly Joker, that's what those long multiple outlet surge protectors are for! Or maybe you have your printer, scanner, cell phone charger, iPod charger, power supply for the video card, TV, and DVD player all plugged into it, along with your toaster? :p Eh, the server can wait!
