While browsing through SLEX I found an ton of stuff for NEKOs..

From reading the descriptions I figured out they were some kind of furry. But just what is a Neko?

Neko means cat in japanese I think..

anyway, its a pseudo furry. Humanoid, furry skin usually but not always, cat ears and tail, sometimes whiskers.

Come to the forum hangout, there are a few cute ones who hang out there. I believe there's a Christmas party on Saturday. Want a LM?

There are a lot of anime fans in SL.

"Neko" is a generic term for the cat people (very often girls, but there are guys too) popular in Japanese cartoons. In the cartoons, they may be able to transform from full feline, to humanoid with ears and tail, to fully human. They usually have some catlike behaviors, as well as the fuzzy bits.

You also see a lot of Nekos at anime conventions. In fact, one con's devoted to them entirely (NEKOCON).

Sooo...in SL, Nekos are those folks walking around with ears, tails, and possibly catlike skins, but otherwise human in appearance, as opposed to the full Furry, who has an animal head and limbs, even though he or she may walk upright.

And we do have a number of very cute kitties among the forum regulars.

As mentioned, it is strictly speaking simply Japanese for "cat".
"Neko" tends to refer to largely human people with cat tails and ears, and possibly fur (though it is likely to keep the face almost entirely human, with perhaps some stripes or spots), whereas the more animalistic ones (prim-modelled head and/or body parts, for example) tend to fall under the generic "furry" label. It's not a clear-cut line, though. Whether somebody with more animal features and/or a "Linden" body shape tweaked outside of the normal human range is considered furry or neko is probably a matter of personal opinion, and to what extend you consider each a subculture versus only a look.

They're pretenders afraid to be "all cat!"

(I kid of course. I love my Neko cousins...they're all bigger than me!)

I hear ya on that... and will be the first to say that 'neko' != furry. But I guess I'm just a dick like that.

I don't claim to be furry personally...it's more like Ann had a furry grandparent or something.

But I don't see how 'fear' or 'pretense' comes into it, even jokingly. She's exactly what I want her to be: a pretty woman with some feline qualities.

I'm very live and let live. (Except antelopes)

I do not have much more to add than what's already been said, but what I find fascinating are all the items now made for neko in SL. It also seems like a booming enterprise. Neko's Obsession (Jango Fell) and Korrupt Kreations (sorry if I got that wrong) make wonderful toys. There's lots of scratching posts, and cuddle towers too!

Now if only Craig from Bits and Bobs would make some very neko lounging animation pose balls, we'd be so set ;-)

To the OP, I have a neko shinto shrine on the Necros sim (note the Japanese region on the one side -- you can't miss it), and a neko boarding house on the other side of the yummy koi pond. Feel free to visit -- neko are roaming about usually.

i'm a neko. or anthromorph. between a human and a furry.

minimum feline characteristics are ears and tail. tho myself, i have a snow leopard-like skin and whiskers also.

when you get to feline genitals ... you've become a furry.

I had heard of neko before SL, but didnt really know anything about it. What got me into the scene a little more, was how cute and how well made alot of the stuff is :-) It is so neat to see how detailed alot of the neko sims are, and alot of the clothes are very well done. I really love kitty-cats in RL, so it really fits my personality well =^.^=

They are a rare exotic breed (& I LOVE THEM!!!)

I don't think I have ever seen one then...

They are quite rare... I dated one once PUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!! I have claw marks on my back to prove it! She was truly the cats meow!

Like stated, they are not considered full furry, but some what half human and half furry. The one I dated looked VERY human apart from furry ears and tail. The flicking tail is usually used for tickling their mate during mating season. The ears when laid flat are a sure sign to get the hell out of there. The soothing purring sound is a sure sign you are hitting it off well with her. The claws are usually sheathed except under times of stress or extreme pleasure.

I saw another lovely Neko dancer at a club, she was covered in tats that were out of this world... she IM'd me to come closer, but I was with a jealous human woman so I didn't dare. The lag was so bad that by the time I was ready to get her information (secretly) we all crashed. I found myself logged out of SL with visions of a sexy looking neko still in my mind...

I also suspect they exude some sort of pheromone that only effects human males, and pisses off the human women accompanying them.

So if you ever see another Neko, let me know, or send her my way!

There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.
