lol. Spirit? I dunno. I do see a huge evolution much like that, and it would be very interesting to see that happen, and while I think other virtual worlds will spring up, I at this point doubt Second Life will manage to hold it together that long. Second Life as a concept is one that will never be forgotten, and will be forever emulated, but Second Life as a program will die long before 2022 at the rate it's going.

And I'm not talking about userbase. SL has a huge fanfollowing, massive, even in terms of just MMO's. But looking at the people who are running it, the coding, the way it runs, I can't see it surviving unless it's sold to someone better.

But that's just my pessimistic attitude about it. Who knows, maybe LL will pull it together and shock us all. I love Second Life, and I'd love to see stuff like that happen, though I do love outside, and while I'd love to go to Mars, I'm more of a person who would prefer to actually do it rather than virtually do it. But that video paints a bleak picture for that sort of thing, I think.

A very interesting video if, perhaps, a little bit starry-eyed. I noticed that they use the 'prosumer' concept as originally mooted by Alvin Toffler in his novel 'The Third Wave' although Toffler coined that word more in relation to the classic division between work and leisure rather than the dichotomy between source and recipient of 'information as a commodity'.

Incredible prophetic apocalypcism!

Thanks for this one, Geuis!

Awesome video, even if it's predictions don't come true!

SL might though. :p

In 2050 there will be some version of a system LIKE second life anyhow.

It will be better, more real, less glitchy etc.

The World wont be as much different as people think. The world wasnt all that different 40 years ago.

Its just technology gets better, most of the things people need to do remain the same. Thats that Biology glitch the developer never has managed to fix in all those years.

Not many years ago people in the media who knew little about computers were talking about how all our lives were going to be changed by the coming 'information super-highway'. Now look at where we are!!!

If we extrapolate current trends Second Life, its successor (or maybe an upstart competitor), will be providing photo-realistic graphics, professional quality building 'tools' that will allow RL stuff to be designed in-world. A combined video camera /gps device will allow you to take lots of photos of, say, your house, and upload them and the programme will instantly create a virtual replica.

But I think in 50 years the internet might also be a much more regulated place and so it's also possible that there will be so few things you'll be allowed to do in virtual worlds that nobody will want to use them!!!

The book Stumbling on Happiness talks about that. If you look at the visions of the future from the 1950's, it's nothing like what we have today. We project the present onto our visions of the future. It's almost always way off base.

The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

I suspect a big map full of yellow land for sale, 20,000 odd sims and 5000 resident campers, sims will sell for $1 US but cost you $700 a month in tier

I agree. Unless SL sells to somebody larger it will die. The exact thing happen to Traveler! (http://www.digitalspace.com/traveler/). At one point it was huge and even MTV used it now its nothing more then dust in the wind. (I love that song). Its still around for the hardcore but nothing like it once was and SL will be heading down that same path. Either somebody big needs to purchase it like Google and fix the problems with it or somebody will come out with something better and people will walk and SL will become waste land.

something better

That's it, right there. Exactly what will happen. What has always happened with anything good. Eventually someone is going to look at Second Life and go "huh, what an awesome idea. Look at how large their userbase. Oh, and look at how many complaints there are! We could do that better!" And then we have something cooler than Second Life.

40 years? whats so diiferent about our society than 40 before? they had computers, we've got much better ones but still computers based on 0 and 1's, no quantum pcs yet, maybe ever.

Cars, same, some mods but essentially the same. houses - same. education standards for the average person have dropped in the western world (no one studies latin anymore etc) and become better in other places (Oprah has a school in Africa etc).

wars over stupid greed and ideals - same. more nukes more overall pollution but less pollution in richer places. birthrates drop in some places and people starving in others.

I think what 2050 will look like is that movie Johnny Mnemonic, the elite in big amazingly techy cities with the poor on the outskirts who service the cities, kinda like Manhattans all over the world.

You can't have extremely wealthy people without a huge underclass, it's basic economics, you even see that in SL.

AND, this is the biggie, as companies merge and grow larger and approach total monopolys, they have less incentive to improve their products, and every incentive to make them fall apart quicker. Your superfast PC is the result of fierce competition not because we are smarter now and it is logical that our processors are better.

If there was no Apple computer company fighting against IBM back in the day, we would not have these giant leaps in performance bringing us to the level we need for something like SL. Large companies are traditionally conservative, slowly improve products, wait for maximum sales then an upgrade, but they will go all out, losing money in the short term if another company is going to leave them in the dust with a superior, affordable product.

No, the trend is for 40 years of more of the same, things are slowing down in terms of progress, regressing in some cases.
