They aren't...they will stay the same and everyone new will be forced to name thier avatars to something like DaL33t1983 or SarahBabyCookie5.

Supposedly, making us pick from a list of last names was supposed to make us not create AOLese names. Little did the Lindens know...

I've always thought the preset last names were a great feature, one that distinguishes SL from other games. I like how all the oldbies have last names that distinguish themselves. And there are all sorts of interesting little cultural, scholarly, and literary references to be found in the selection.

It gives me the feeling that there are some really hip people behind the scenes at LL. Wish I knew which ones were responsible.

Problem is once all the bots have got all the Sue, John, Peter firstnames you have to pick a number or choose something wacky I would like to have my first RL name with an obscure last name on at least one of my alts.

There is a much easier fix - allow spaces in the first name. Doesn't have to STORE or INPUT as a space, just has to be PRESENTED like that.

I feature-requested surname voting a few months back. The usual "proles would abuse" defence was the response. persoanlly, if a bunch of 'phobes all wanted to be Homer PudgeFacker, I'd treat their choice as a handy indicator and move right along.

LMAO!

I use my rl first name and my rl last name begins with a C. That's basically why I chose it.

First names don't have to be unique, only the combination of first and last name. There are hundreds if not thousands of Sues and Johns on the grid. Uhm... "thousands of Johns on the grid" sounds odd somehow... anyway, pick a last name that isn't altoo popular, and the first name of your choice will likely be available.

It would make me truly happy if we could create our own last names someday. LL has shown interest in this in the past, but never went through with it because they couldn't figure a way to promote and do it that would work. In theory it is possible, it's just how they intend to handle payment and such...

My mother's maiden name was Italian and Sephardic so I picked the first SL surname that had the same origins. I always wanted be a Frances or Francesca in RL; I might not have picked it if I'd known there was a RL Italian model of the same name. :)

I don't even need the ability to choose my own last name, as I'm quite happy with Worthington (since similar to Mandy, I use my RL first name and a last name of the same starting letter), however I do greatly see and appreciate the need to allow users to have the option to.

Even if users couldn't change thier last name to anything, they should at least be presented with the option to change thier last name to another Linden Labs provided one. My real life last name came up for selection a month or two after I came in world...and honestly..I was tempted to create a newer "truer" me...so to speak. But then to have to start from scratch with my assests, groups, and whatnot? No thanks. But it would certainly allow people a bit more freedom and comfort in knowing that their account info and what have you is stored by thier personal Avatar Key, and that thier last name was just another Text based data feild (such as one's Picks or Profile Description) linked to said avatar key.

Charge a fee of 5000L or $20 USD per name change if you must. Make the feature usable only once a month if you'd like. Do both for crying out loud....but please figure out some way to give your users one of the most valued and sought after features, and please do so soon.

(DISCLAIMER: Sorry. Didn't mean to sound so whiny. Just geting my senses about me and I haven't eaten yet. :) )

Joseph! Totally!
People have all kinds of weird ideas for choosing your own last name but really.. just charge us 20 bucks and let us pick one if we really want to. This year :D

Until you guys get around to actually doing that, you could at least give us a list of cute last names to choose from ;)

Hmm tried this on 3 seperate occasions making alts ant Pat & Patrick are not available on any of the surname options that were available

What could work as well is if we had an option to change just our displayed name, but our real name showed on our prifiles and objects we made, that way Bruce Wayne could change to Batman without still having Bruce Wayne above his head.

Um right. That's what I meant. Let's not confuse the Linden people with weird name concepts Tegg. Simple is better. I give you money, you give me a name. =D

I used to always be furry, but I stopped w/ that and have come over an emo-av phase. Well, of course, "Sir Snookums" isn't a very good name for an emo person. >>
