Second Life already has competition from virtual worlds that are easier to use. THERE springs to mind immediately. One only need look at the number of Therian Refugees in Second Life to understand why, in my estimation, There is nothing more than a school for future Second Lifers. The poster who pointed out that Easier VR = training wheels for Second Life hit the nail on the head in my estimation.

What I've seen from THERE is only the highly annoying Demo Video, but going from that, if SL is ever threatened by that, it's time to shut the lights and move along.

Wait till Sims 3 comes out... if - as many think - it'll have an online capability, that might well dent SL, considering a lot of sims players have come to SL.

An interesting paragraph from said article.

However, SL doesn’t follow this model. Indeed through age/identity verification it would appear to be trying to be as far from this model as possible. Is that SL’s Unique Selling Point, being a platform for advertisers to get to tech savvy adults?

Online gamers (without wanting to get into a debate about whether this is a game, I'm using it as a generic term for all online worlds and games) are on average well over 18. The 25-40 bracket would seem to be the key age group to target, so in that respect, LL are doing the right thing.

small change - comparing apples to oranges.

They're both fruit - and there the comparisons end :)

LL wants to be the 3d net, with their protocols defining the future for it. LL wants to be Verisign, not Electronic Arts.

Aim higher :)

If LL did decide to sell however, what is the possibility that the purchaser could decide to revamp the entire world, kick out the residents and reclaim their virtual property without compensation? "They";(Google, Microsoft, Sony, take your pick) could then re-open SL with a different business model entirely.

Well, I think the big argument to that point would be the most valuable asset LL have ... us .. the user base.

6 million or 400k, take your pick but anyone kicking us all out and starting again would have one almighty mistrust hurdle to negotiate?

If Second Life becomes too Disney and Sanitized - Ill be one of the ones looking for another Virtual World to go to.

As long as any other competition that comes up does not bother making Linux or Mac clients, I won't be switching. I will continue to support SL just because they support open source and Linux. I don't know of a single other game/platform similiar to SL that does this.
