If I wanted to see what people really looked like, I'd hang out in RL more. ;)

I'm all for personal sims, owned by us for whatever we want... but it's a pandoras box of sharing and trust issues that will be absolute hell to iron out.

I know - but the idea here was that the structure would be the same as real life, and thus a lot of the content problem disappears. If you, as a visitor to an offsite sim (not the owner), can look the same as yourself IRL, can't build (so no need for building tools) and there's nowhere to go but the island (so no need for navigation tools) and nothing to buy (so no need for L$) then not having access to the central network isn't a problem.

For the owner of the sim, these might be more of a problem, but the idea is that the owner of the sim should be an RL corporation hiring a metaverse development company who are going to build everything largely independantly of anything already on the grid - and anything they need, they'll probably have made themselves, so they can bring it over by cut and paste.

but then you have a problem. people don't want to be the same thing for very long. corporations are actually made out of people who don't want to be the same thing for very long. thats why they change policies and remodel the logos and find new ways to brainwash each others.

we can't all have the "wow such great imagination and power to create absolutely amazing and completely different things and worlds and personas" and in fact normality fluctuations can be very subtil.

we can all be sure, however, that we will have peace when we die and go to second life plus. till then we're kinda stuck on some concerning about someones something. if only we could all be the same thing at the same time with the same mood and state-of-mind right?and all be able to shut down reality outside and move inside a big perceptual dream. this is like 4007 or something.

and then virtually connect all the brains to a server and make us all interact inside our super-powered perceptual dreams. Then nobody would wake up ever again and we would all be sleeping inside eggs floating in space with chips in the skin to recycle space dust into vitamins.

I love Lucy, correct? It was the vitamin drink that she was hired to sell, but tasted so awful she didn't do a very good job of it.

I was pure and didn't google, but if I won, just put the 250L in Relay For Life vendor :)

You forgot that she gets drunk off it, too.

It was one of many moments of sheer genius from the brain of Lucille Ball.

I like the idea of First Life Plus!

I don't think it'll help though. For me, the problem isn't so much the obvious role playing folk. It's the more subtle forms of roleplay that I find a problem. That is, the people that deliberately hold back information because they feel it may prevent other people from liking them. Examples - Married people with kids, overweight people, people with gender issues, computer programmers, people with tentacles, people called Philip, etc etc etc..

But to get rid of these types of people would cause the 'Online Now' number to fall to zero. :p

The metaverse is a role playing environment.

In other words - Nobody in Second Life is actually being themselves. You couldn't be yourself even if you tried. We become our avatars, rather than our avatars become us. Avatars aren't realistic enough to portray our real selves. and even if they was, then I doubt we'd be honest with the sliders. :)

Now this where I get told off by all the fat folk with tentacles, named Philip.

Bring it on!

heh...

people aren't even satisfied with the identities they create in SL... you might have met that zaftig, tentacled woman (whose real name is Phillip) a dozen times under a dozen different alts and not even know it...

he might also have a MySpace page with pictures of his 20 year old niece on it and call himself "Jenny"...

This isn't unique to SL, or even the internet...

First Life Plus sounds like a way of saying "no- really- I'm telling the truth, this time"...

and how pissed would you be THEN when you find out those love letters are really written in squid ink?

people will always be bad at communicating with each other, and will always try, anyway.

at least, I'll keep trying.

I say just drop 'em all in the same pit and let 'em work it out.

I wasn't passing any judgement on people who use SL and the various relationships they might have between their RL identities and their SL avatars. All I was doing was suggesting there might be another potential market for a different product that LL could tap into!!!

So shall it be written, so shall it be done. Congratulations.
