So would screen shots of the RL boss in Gor silks be useful in getting a good raise?

It may raise a laugh ..... or were you meaning blackmail?

I think the latter would be seen as broadly offensive ... the first too .. but then he's *your* boss ;)

Ummmm I am self employed............I deny that I ever wore Gor silks. Also, I did not have sex with that woman.

lol;) y'know not long ago there was a supreme court justice come into sl for a speech/q&a session (i believe that was his ranking, sorry don't quote me - too busy to search on it right now but i think NewWorldNotes blog had an entry on it :) - quoth the judge, 'nice raccoon suit.' (paraphrasing - something like that.;) you get the point.:)

I believe you are referring to Judge Richard Posner, who is not a Supreme Court Justice, but a Justice of one of the United States' Courts of Appeals (in Chicago- 7th Circuit?). I regret that I wasn't around to attend his speech.

I don't want to spend RL time with my Boss if I can avoid it, let alone in SL.

I agree with this post.

Posting on topic- smart business would be to make better use of the digital conferencing capabilities of the internet. It could be a huge time and money saver. I would think that web cams would be more professional than Second Life. But Second Life is better than wasted mileage and wasted travel/walking time for businesses with large offices, or offices spread out over multiple buildings. Especically given the rising cost of gasoline, Second Life for business meetings is probably a good business move.

Now, if I used Second Life for business meetings, and also for socialization, I think that I would keep two separate avatars for the separate activities.

I really can't imagine what kind of value add there is in having an SL meeting for most RL businesses.

GoToMeeting and several similar programs have far better performance and reliability, plus give you the ability to share desktops or applications and documents. That's really all you need.

Frankly, I'd be embarrased to meet with any of my clients in Second Life. I would never wish to risk an interuption by various unsavory sorts, and the constant reliability issues would not speak well for my choice of venue.

I love SL for SL business and play, but it's just not suitable for most RL business relationships.

.

I agree.

I suppose a virtual world could be used for Real Estate purposes, or for an interior decorator, these kind of professions ?????

Like I said before, I'm co-owner of a company and I wouldn't go into business here. I don't really want my clients to know which groups I'm in. :D

My land scaper usues a really neat CAD orgram to show mw what he wants to do before he tears up my yard, and decoratin my SL huse is a lot of fun, so I guess there are uses. I'm sure a talented builder could duplicate someone's RL home in world.

Oh I'm sure of that, and those are professions that could benefit from the SL concept. But like stated before in this thread, there are far more reliable programs for meetings then good old laggy SL.

I can't even imagine talking to my boss and co-workers etc in SL, do you think that will ever catch on ?

If your boss is female just cyber her.

I got a raise last week. (no pun intended)

I don't think SL is there yet as a platform for business meetings (and may never be)

Pros:

Potentially more immersive than video conferencing (most video conferencing is pretty dire to be honest unless you spend a lot of money on properly fitted out rooms).

3D workspace could be used to collaborate better than the current virtual white boards etc

Cons:

Security is iffy (If you had a private Island Sim I guess you would be ok)

Reliability is iffy (compared to what is required for business)

The current 3D workspace tools are laughably sub par compared to what my company would need (No good bi directional links to industrial strength 3D software such as Unigraphics, ProEngineer Catia etc)

Of course I'd need a separate avatar since for some meetings I would be the boss and I don't feel inclined to have my subordinates looking up what groups my regular avatar is a member of...

I can't believe all the vile :) wicked :) and depraved :) people in SL that don't want their coworkers to see what groups they are in. You are all broadly offensive and will be AR'd.

Looks around at his glass house. :D

I think it would actually be fairly reliable if you had an island dedicated to it. Think about all the big problems after updates- how many of them actively prevent someone from logging in a private sim (not necessarily tp'ing!) and IMing/chatting?

Some presentations might be awkward if parts go missing (which is admittedly rare and smart presenters would have backups)- but if you have absolute control over the user-generated lag in your sim and are not selling/purchasing/building there's very little loss in day to day capability.

It's the rest of us creators and buyers running amok in spaztastic sims with campers, run away scripts, players with 500prim accessories, and demanding a higher level of immediate functionality that have all the problems.

Honestly the very first time in 8 months of playing that I've had any problems with an update was the last update (Couldn't teleport out of my apartment) and today- I upgraded to premium and tried to buy lindens/land and had issues. I build, but not for a living so if some prim wanders off I rarely notice it's gone. I've always had a lean inventory so I don't have any problems there and I spend most of my time in small businesses or sandboxes.

If your demands on the viewer are low- the problems you have are usually low as well. You simply don't run into as many of the bugs.

Indeed we are. As a matter of fact I enjoy being wicked, it adds to the whole SL experience...

/me grabs Chris's AR and does something broadly offensive with it before handing it back to him.

As it happens I have two objections to my coworkers/subordinates knowing who my regular AV is:

1) They would most definitely gossip about it

2) I just don't think they would be very good tippers ;)

Man, if you're going to do RL business in SL with coworkers and such- it's more than worth your time to create an alt, deck it out in a nice set of newbie stuff (and there's some very very nice stuff for newbies out there if you know where to look), and to just leave it on the private sim to use when you're having meetings.

Bingo! You won't ever have the embarrassment of running into your boss in an... awkward place. Say... a free sex club with his (or her) 18 inch prim masterpiece or as your new Dom or Sub. I mean that's stuff you just *don't need to know* about each other.

I haven't gotten my boss into SL...yet...but I have worked with one of my coworkers in SL on a work-related project (using an alt - this identity is too tied in with my personal life for me to be comfortable with letting my coworkers know about it).

Yeah, it feels pretty weird if you're used to thinking of SL as a personal venue, but I think it'll be happening more and more often.

Somehow I find it a bit difficult, embarassing even, to even imagine any RL acquaintances playing Second Life (apart from my own 'RL agent', without whom I coudn't do anything!). It's a bit like imagining your parents having sex - best not thought about!!!!!

Now that I think about it, my ex-boss does have an account in Second Life. She used it a grand total of three times, and we did hang out, but she lost interest when Vanguard came out, lol.
