-I remember when Prim dinosaurs roamed the mainland.
-The great flood that lasted 48 hours when water levels were screwed up.
-The old gladiator fights where losers were banned, and winners given 512 plots.
-The Castle Era where sims had King's & Queens, and everyone was dressed like they were at a renaissance fair.
-The discovery of the first private island called "The Americas"
-And of course the discovery of avatar flight by Orville & Wilbur Linden.

I remember Logging into SL and not thinking "what are they gonna messup today",
and I remember when some one came to help you when you lost something from inventory,
I remember actually liking to log in and having a good time in SL with out getting aggravated
now i look to the future when a new program will come out to replace SL

I remember in beta 2002: How men could have boobies that infact you could have 3 boobies if you want and there was special edicational groups that taught how to make penises but everything was so new, confusing I couldn't figure out anything. Out of 12 visits or so that I made before it went public I saw only one person the entire time.

The Worst Change Ever!
08-04-2007 14:18
What was undoubtedly the worst change that has occurred in Second Life and likely will be the worst change that ever will occur in Second Life, from a personal point of view, was the elimination of the policy that allowed one to buy a lifetime membership with 4096 sqm of tier free land.

This offer vanished not long after I joined, too soon for me to have figured out that I'd still be here nearly 4 years later.

I have a little more spending money now than I had then, at least I will till I break down and start tending to my medical problems, and if I'd felt as solvent back then as I do now I might have taken advantage of the offer.

I spent maybe a thousand or so buck on land and tier since then, so I'd have saved a bunch of dough and possibly be one of those prestigous old timers with land in the old sims where the slaristocracy live.

I can remember when the color sims were just about to go "public". For a few weeks, the Lindens wanted to develop some of these sims with specific themes. I somehow got invited to join the WizWorld group, which was supposed to build a theme park in Mocha. The park idea never took off, but for a few weeks, the whole color sim region was invisible to the general public, and only people with a landmark could teleport in.

We used to have to wait until noon (3pm Eastern Time) to get into SL back in beta. SL was only open 12 hours per day, noon to midnight. When we weren't in world, we were in the forums.

As a noob, I found my first land by simply flying around and finding an empty spot. I paid $L1/m. I still own that plot.

I remember...

gathering around for the early 'show and tells' where people showed creations

asking in a forum thread for 512m of land - the embryonic 'first land' program

when you could use $L to pay your USD tier (at incredibly lousy exchange rates)

trying to win a brand new mainland parcel in auctions in a new sim

the incredible demand for 'snow' land

Heaven and Hell in Krittania

when Gaming Open Market could exchange $L and Therebucks

When someone TP'd you somewhere on the mainland you could actually recognize roughly where you were.

And before Point to Point Teleporting the telehub flying to your destination faster than stuff rezzed runs.

O brave new world that has such people in it.

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

Oh I hope so. LOL. No, Shakespeare's The Tempest really sets the characters free - and if Prospero had a daughter, then he also had Caliban. With every "good" there is also a negative.

I remember all of the fun stuff and the comradeship that existed in the olden days when men were men and women were women but all I can say about the new "internet" is that someone at LL has their wires crossed if they think people want to be wearing headphones and microphones to play a stupid game!

As an F---ing Jew myself, I find Ahern these days to be a cesspool

I remember when we had community standards that people actually understood, practiced, and believed in.

Its been that way for some time now. Frankly its just a wasteland

And we had to walk to school in 3 feet of snow!! lol.

I believe it was WALK from the Telehubs :)

I believe it was pre 1.5 lag did not exist. 1.4 and before client was the last i believe.

But what was the population at that time? Oct 21st, 2004 30,000 population I believe. those days were golden ones for many. 1,000`s of friends laster well can`t say if we are any better off then before.

As for Lindens they were helpful, and Live help MEANT live help! Not this Put a ticket and pray they fix your problem. As for mentors, that too was a golden time NOW shakeshead don`t even measures up to the title these days those people do. I cane in 1.5.5 client. I was confused and alone. Nobody really helped me, but if i asked they helped. Wonderful times it was. I never forget those times. Time moves on and so does the sl.

I'm only an 05'er but I really miss that actual live help we used to get now and then that the OP Mentioned. Was nice knowing most of the Lindens and who to go to when you needed help. And with that said... Thank You for dealing with me so much in my early days Jack, Guy, and Teeple Linden.

I'm not all that old so there isn't much to add :p.

But I do miss...
- a L$330/$1 exchange rate
- the in-world transaction history
- Live Help(ing)
- the Linden Answer forum (and techincal/detailed blog posts)
- regular town halls

And I remember...
- the grey-goo attacks (those were kind of fun, hours of scripts disabled grid-wide)
- the asset server crash in December '06 (LL closed log-ins for the better part of a day with only 600ish of us still logged on for the entire grid with a dozen of us roaming the grid looking for other "survivors" :))

Y'all are making me wish I'd been around back then. It sounds like it must have been amazing!

I have to say, though, that I've been to some AMAZING places and some gorgeous places and some rockin places; I want to make something that will last, that will be amazing for those to come; and that's all thanks to you who were first. You all showed us newbs what is possible and for that I thank you!

Yeah. Anyone remember SimCity? Where you zoned and built roads and stuff, and then just when everything was pretty and humming along nicely, Godzilla would traipse through, stomping and burning all in its path? Now, what fun would SL be without analogous occasional injections of entropy?

Actually, I sell a large scale Godzilla Avatar if you're feeling 'home sick'. ;)

Ghidorah, Cthulhu & Gamera too!

I remember when the grid was done in DOS, and everything you did was through a command line: C:\llmovenorthwest /sit /wall /playsound "laugh". :D

I haven't quite been here a year yet, but the "your world, your imagination" thing inevitable becomes a bit tired when you've been in-world some time.

When I came here I marvelled at how I could enhance my appearance from the original 'girl next door' av with the purple jumper, at how I could explore and possibly at a later date buy land or build stuff. Now I take all that for granted. I've have a stable appearance since soon after I started that I have no wish to modify apart from occasional new clothes. I have as much land as my RL agent will let me buy, I've built lots of stuff, sold some of it and dabbled in land investment.

So there are fewer new things to try as one's time in SL increases. Updates and new features plus improved performance and reliability are things to look forward to, and hopefully Windlight, when it's sorted, will boost the visual experience considerably. I'm never bored with SL and I guess the secret of happiness is to not spend too much time hooked up to your RL-er's computer so they don't get bored with spying on you!!!

Reality Check
08-05-2007 03:36
Uhhh?
Isn't this becoming like listening to your GrandParents? How great things were during the war etc... pfft

Early days of SL meant, less people, less resourses, lagg, lagg lagg. Sitting at a game of tringo for 20 minutes waiting for the scoreboard to catch up due to lag, before it could payout the winings, assuming the game/sim didn't crash and you would loose. Walking/flying from fixed TP points, rubber banding most of the time. Every Wednesday was 'Update' day. The place was so small you didn't need the Map, the mini-map was all you needed (j/k). For some part, it was Lindens that held events and were very approachable (although that hasn't changed, it's just the game has gotten much larger). Combat and Roleplaying was in it's infancy, so was held generally around the platform, as opposed to more group orientated, as now. 'Da South' was the 'IN' place, specifically as it was the only place LOL.. Welcome Island was 'less confusing' simply because there was less to learn. Everything was scaled down to what it is today.
Anyone who has frequented the Beta Grid, would have a fair idea of what SL was like back when I started. The only thing from a commerce apsect, that was in abundance was TEE SHIRTS .. lol...

There was a time when the Lindens were more public. You could hang out in Ahern and see them regularly. I still have calling cards from a number of early Lindens. There was always a Linden in attendance for every event, and if griefers appeared, they were dealt with instantly.

Speaking of events, the last event of the evening during beta was the "No Host Chat". We would all head to Stage 4. Stage 4 was where most SL events were held. No Host Chats were just a bunch of avatars discussing whatever was the topic of the day. Even though the event was informal, there was usually a Linden in attendance.

I guess the No Host Chat has evolved (or devolved) into what you see in the Ahern Welcome Area today. Now, instead of Stage 4, we have that planter in the center of the Welcome Area which just happens to be located exactly where Stage 4 used to be.

We also used to have an Event Board. Every day, it gave out notecards listing all the events of the day. I used to have a few of those old notecards, but "the system" flushed them away a long time ago. However, I still have this rather historical notecard from June 13, 2003...

You are cordially invited to attend the dedication ceremony honoring all the Lindens for their hard work and commitment to making the SL community possible.

Date: June 18th
Day: Wednesday
Time: 6:00pm PDT
Place: Apmitheatre in Clara

Formal attire recommended but not necessary.

We look forward to seeing you there. Please come early as sim may fill quickly.
