Sending pictures to an email requires that the sender reveal their own email to the recipiant. That's the phishing part I was suggesting.

What part of the email address "Lance.Corrimal@googlemail.com" would reveal my real email address?

Don't forget about IP tracking & all that stuff.

If it doesn't worry you, it doesn't.

I suppose the theory is that a certain percentage of people dumb enough to comply with all the 'survey' requirements will also be dumb enough to give their main email account.

Main email account or a "throw away" email.........it's a email that can be used as a target for spam/phishing. It does not need to be any specific email...........just an email to do whatever it is the spammers or phishers want to do. A contact point.

True, although in the "sell lists of gullible people" biz, emails that are from non-free accounts might sell for more than emails from free sources like Yahoo or Hotmail. (Just guessing, but that would be logical.)

Dear Second Life Players,

I am conducting research on personality characteristics and online communities. If you are a female over 18 years of age, you may qualify to participate in this study. Participation entails filling out two personality questionnaires, answering questions about your Second Life use and avatar, and e-mailing pictures of your avatar to me. Participating in this study will take approximately 1 hour of your time. If you are interested in participating or would like to learn more, please copy the link below and paste it into your address bar.

Thanks!

If there isn't a level of SL hell for people who post unnecessary surveys, there should be. It should be full of stupid, vapid surveys that take wayyyy more time than anyone wants to spend on the things, asking repeating questions with A/S/L tossed in just for special attention. It should also have a wonderful feature that if the taker misses even one tiny question (including those that are supposedly optional), then the taker has to retake all of the past surveys. The only way one should be able to redeem one's self from this hell is to take ALL of the stupid surveys in the world.

Also, there would be a sub-clause that the poster of said survey shall add another 10 years of future surveys to their punishment if they post it in a forum/place that isn't for surveys. I'd say, add another 15 years of future surveys for not offering compensation for taking the survey.. and another 30 for forgetting to put PIE as a choice in the multiple choice sections of the survey.

I wonder if there's a sociology professor somewhere that's actually, specifically assigning students to research Second Life and take surveys of participants.

Yeah some hippy numb-deedoo who provides me with the kinda attitutude I have always held about education... bunch of ne'er-do-wells who have f**k all to do with their time except waste it and earn a huge salary in the mean time.

You can make money in education. My latin teacher in high school was making $100,000+ a year. Of course she had been working for 20+ years in a rich public school district. I believe the starting minimum in that school district was $35,000 at the time (or $15,000, I do not actually recall the minimum, though I know the latin teacher was making $100,000+).

If she had ever moved to a different school district, she would have lost that senority. At least that is how it was explained to me. So she would have to stay in the same place 20+ years for that type of salary. (of course I've stayed in the same place for . . an undisclosed number of years, and do not find it a burden too hard to withstand. heh)

I'm not saying it's not an okay paying career -- it's certainly better than McDonald's -- but "huge" salaries? Not usually. Frankly I'm surprised to hear any high school teacher was making that much without being in a management/admin position. Were they at least head of the language department?

The academics I work with generally make enough for a nice little suburban home, as long as both spouses work and they manage their money wisely. But none of them are rich.

(And lots of them are hurting now due to California budget cuts... many of my friends had their salaries cut 20%, and some are now in danger of losing their homes. Sorry, guess this little bitch of Jig's just hit a little close to home for me. :( )

Hmmm . . . Jig, try to remember your loving "hippy numb-deedo" virtual sis, who very much hopes one day to "have f**k all to do with [her] time except waste it and earn a huge salary in the mean time."

:D

She was not in administration/management. I admit that it was/is a somewhat unusual situation. It is/was one of the richest public school systems in the country, and she had been in it for a very long time.

There are trade offs, as I had mentioned before, losing senority if you move systems, etc. And having to work with hormonal teenagers and try to teach them a dead language.

I recall she had a very nice car, though beyond recalling that tidbit, I do not recall what type of car she drove.

And sorry for your friends. Salary cuts are evil.

In summary i've done several of these stupid surveys, more out of morbid curiosity rather than the pittance of lindens offered. Even though some have taken an exorbitant amount of time to do, I often receive an email back saying the survey I filled in is unsatisfactory because 1. my answers were too uniform for the questions asked, 2. I hadn't taken enough time to assimilate the importance of the survey and 3. I wasn't taking it seriously........I mean, can you wonder why people actually bother?

Whenever someone posts a survey, we send them notecards, lots and lots of notecards. Useful newbie info, but also anything you feel like cleaning out of your inventory. Let *them* sort it out.

A good incentive to clean up all those notecards people send to get around the message cap.

They do that so they don't have to pay you for your effort, but they will still use you're information for their idiotic "research."

Well folks, here's the scoop.

I just called Ruth Grant (her phone number is provided in the first page of the survey.) She's a real person doing a real Master's program and she offered to have me call her advisor.

She's a little confused as to why people are sending nude photos - remember, the default SL skins now have underwear - so she was unaware that we can actually be fully nude. All she wants is pics with underwear - no nudity! Her survey has something to do with body type as how you see yourself.

She's upset that we're all tired of surveys and has promised to make the thing a lot shorter. I also advised that she go inworld and join some sociology or other interest groups and ask those folks to take her survey.

She promised to actually learn a little about SL. :) I give her kudos for listening to feedback.

Ruth, if you're reading this, I'll take your new survey when/if you post the link here.

Well folks, here's the scoop...
Wow, didn't see that coming. I'm glad you followed up, Oryx. The fact that she's a Master's student would explain the lack of previous publications, and also why she's not on the faculty list.

I will admit the mix-up about the naked pics is pretty funny. :p

That said, I still don't like being treated like a damn lab rat all the time, especially by folks who haven't taken the time to familiarize themselves with the forums they post surveys in. I do not wish to encourage this behavior.

You know what? I was just looking for an old thread to necropost in, and my search picked up this survey, which we all thought was a "show me your boobies" survey.

So I thought HAW HAW HAW - perfect!

but !

I ***NEVER*** saw this post of Oryx until now.

And wow.
