So I guess text is tied to your avatar position and audio is tied to the camera position. I wonder if that's an oversight or if there's some reason for it.
It sounds like a good candidate for a bug report. Voice being tied to the camera is definitely a privacy issue.

The current Voice Beta has three options.
1: What you hear is based on camera position and orientation (default). In other words, it's a remote ear and eyes.
2: What you hear is based on your avatar position and camera orientation.
3: What you hear is based on avatar position and avatar orientation.
I think #2 will be a better default for most people, as a lot of folks that I know pan the camera to follow conversations, rather than staying in mouselook and turning their head or body.
I agree that #1 makes a great privacy invasion tool and will be subject to abuse.

So people having tender moments together will exchange sweet nothings audibly, with the emphasis on nothing, and the real action will be in the IMs - aside from the scripted convulsions from the pose balls, of course.
Even so, a Peeping Tom's delight.

another option
04-16-2007 12:55
I didn't see it mentioned yet above, but there is another handy option in the debug menu. (I'm not in front of my SL client at the moment, so forgive me if I don't have this exact)
Client > Character > Show Look At
You will see several markers appear on your display. When moving your camera around, you set an "anchor point" for it, this appears as a red or pink marker. Mouselook and standard viewing appear differently. So if you're alone with someone and a 3rd marker shows up on your wall... Could be someone a great distance away is peering inside. A previous posted who detailed how to do this said to just wave at them and watch them take off when they realize they've been made.
Hope that helps some.

Yes, the "show look at" does work, but only if you notice there is one more focus point on the walls then there should be. I doubt you can trace it back, however. Personally, in any situation I am worried about someone peeping on, I'm usually too occupied with my guest to notice an extra red spot on someone's derriere. Especially when both of us may be aiming cameras and taking snapshots to preserve the memories of the encounter. What bothers me is suddenly finding them in the room, standing at the foot of the bed, staring. Or worse... That is why I own a security orb. And I have grown quite skillful at "freeze, ban and eject". I once banned a bedroom intruder from both my parcel and a two-sim estate before he could even utter a single word.

From: Colette Meiji I predict they wont even have considered the possibility that it will be an issue ahead of time. If the beta testers are talking about it, then the possibility is being considered. If you are worried that it isn't, become a beta tester and point it out. It's always more fun to rant that "LL hates us and never thinks ahead!", I know, but c'mon.

Heheh gadgets are fun...
I can see, zoom in and shoot someone 3 sims away...
I can select a 'Camera Mic' function, disable camera restraints and listen to someone talking miles away....
Use a booster to go though walls, great fun for those buildings with 'Members Only Doors' *eg*
Nothing is private in SL

If LL had considered it an issue, then why is it designed into the system? Sorry this has "an 8 year old could of figured out this was a privacy problem" written all over it.

We had made a 'waypoint traveller' system for our companies machinima activities.. a biproduct of the system (not intended) is that you can travel through any solid prim within its path, whilst making movies from great distances. Before anyone asks, no its not for sale!
I believe there are 'chat listeners' in SL.. so be wise and keep the chat to IM.. it's potentially the only privacy you may have.

From: Raymond Figtree Kira, please explain how someone can steal objects that don't belong to them. I thought this was impossible.
I had it set for sale for my baby and they simply bought it. I was waiting for him to come in and buy it. It is considered stolen because they inturded into my private home and invaded my privacy. I am not really familiar with this, but this is what our builder told me. He told me this is against Sl's TOS and to report him. Poor guy really got jumped on. As soon as he was back in, he was back in a flash and sold it back to me. Lucky for him, I didnt have to get out my AK47 and mow him down. In his profile it said that he is a builder and a scripter, I am suprised though that he did not know this was against TOS.

From: Colette Meiji from what the beta testers say though, you will be able to hear their voice chat zoomed in with the camera. So this privacy issue I predict will be much huger once that goes live.
I predict they wont even have considered the possibility that it will be an issue ahead of time. Yep you can zoom in and hear them. I have betta tested voice only once but you can mute them and I believe they can't hear you either. Really not sure about that though because I didn't mute anyone, it was just too much fun listening to their chit chat. There is a very long page about all of this, but I have not taken the time to read it yet.

He told me this is against Sl's TOS and to report him. Buying an object set for sale to anyone is not against the TOS, or theft, thats why you can set things to sell to a particular person. Entering any parcel, building, house, whatever, no matter how 'private' you consider it to be is not against the TOS, thats what parcel powers are for. There are no 'break and enter' laws in SL. Also setting land so a person can not enter it, will do nothing to stop them from buying something for sale on that parcel.

From: SuezanneC Baskerville How? Good question, I'm not sure what I was thinking there. You obvioulsy can't. But the point is still valid that its not theft, it was set for sale, regardless on who you inntended to sell it to. Luckily there are still few honest peopl around and gave it back

Nothing is private in SL Well, if you would try the "booster-thingy" that on the locked rooms on my land, you will end up banned. Even when I am not online, I know that someone has been there. One way ticket to the banlist.... Don't know why, but when I read your message the word "voyeur" comes up in my mind. Morwen.

Ya I dunno what I was thinking, although as evidenced by a couple of other threads that I'm intertwined in right now, this would make a hell of a feature suggestion on Jira.
