Just don't buy ATI if you're focusing on SL. OpenGL just isn't the same on their cards. Nvidia has it right when it comes to OpenGL.
I'd say the best bet is gonna be an nvidia 7600 w/256mb..... but that's if you can find it in the agp version... pretty sure they make it.

I'm running SL on: "nVidia GeForce 6600 w/256mB memory. Processor is Intel at 2.4 gHz w/1 mB RAM. FPS runs at around 15 fps. "nVidia GeForce 7300 w/256mB memory. Processor is Intel Duo at 2.4 gHz w/2 gB RAM, FPS runs at around 25 to 30 fps. *nVidia GeForce 7950 SLI (dual processors on one card) with 1 gB memory. Processor is Intell Duo Extreme w/2 gB RAM. FPS hovers at around 60 in most locations and tops out around 120 fps in sims with low populations. In the Welcome Area, fps drops to around 35. If you've got the money, spring for the best nVidia card money can buy. If you can't afford that, stick with nVidia. I switched from ATI to nVidia with an equivalent card (the 6600) and my framerates doubled at the time. (They've since dropped as local lighting effects and so forth have increased in world.) Kam

Thanks for the good advice so far everyone. I would agree with the advice to stay away from an FX card, as that's what I am using now (which previously worked fine). This is the card DEFINITELY NOT TO BUY: Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 128MB.
