Friends, Romans and the Ruthed of the world lend me your ears..

We are at a crossroads here, SL is in a paradigm shift

the old ways of laisse-faire unregulated capitalism are waning, SL is no longer new and shiny- eventually a major interest will either aquire SL or offer an alternative.

not to forget the tech problems that threaten to end this virtual world...

So, the bottom line, at this point in time where do you stand?

be honest, tomorrow all could change, but today how do you feel?

(work with the poll options if you can)

You forgot the pie-option... A good poll has always a pie option!!!!

To the subject, I am sure things will getting better again and for most I still have a great time in SL.

I LOVE this game, but seems it gets more and more stressful. I'll be here no matter what, but I hope it reaches a more comfortable fun usable spot again. I think after LL catches up with the mass population growth they created it'll be better again.

I'm with you. Although this week has been horrid, I'm still upbeat about it. I don't have a lot invested, so as long as I'm having fun, I'm fine. (I haven't lost any shoes, so I'm still ahead of the game)

I love polls... but hate these one sided ones. Where is the "I love second life right now" option? or how about "Im not experiencing problems at the moment"?

If you only give negative options, you will only get negative responses lol

Ahh... I beat you.

Most worse moment was 2 weeks ago... I started to lag badly, found myself walking uncontrolable... even above water... Then SL started to strip of my clothes... my shoes... my hair... my skin.... and at last I crashed!!!! :P

And as long that doesn't happen again, I am doing great....

I just wish that there were more people around ... for a while it was buzzing the way it used to when I signed up ... then there was a land expansion and a thinning out ... then an influx of users ... then more land expansion means more places for people to be.

So many casual SL people are fairweather avs. I stick here no matter what cos I love it, and that goes for a lot of people here I guess.

Heaven help LL when the alternatives come though. Esp if it's an alternative which isn't based out of San Francisco.

For now I'm happy playing with and losing tiny prims, and making myself look less like a monkey :)

Where was the choice for the people who are making money at this time? And the one for people who are wincing because their shoe is up their ass?

Of course it's more stressful for you now: people are chasing you around combat sims with loaded weapons!

I just lost 5 hours of scripting work. The grid gods ate it when I tried to pick up the scripted linkset. Needless to say, I'm pretty pissed off and can't find the current state of the grid amusing at all.

the old ways of laisse-faire unregulated capitalism are waning, SL is no longer new and shiny- eventually a major interest will either aquire SL or offer an alternative.

not to forget the tech problems that threaten to end this virtual world...

So, the bottom line, at this point in time where do you stand?

be honest, tomorrow all could change, but today how do you feel?

(work with the poll options if you can)

I feel that people just love to cause drama and overlook the fact that SL is a platform that is growing _exponentially_ and is still being developed. The foundations are still being laid, and in small steps it is slowly growing more stable (in proportion to user load).

There are three components of SL, that when combined, make it magic: the building/visual side, the economic side, and the social side. Underlying this is the stability issue.

What is LL doing for each of these areas?

Message liberation is a major step towards lasting, scalable stability. Furthermore, bug reporting and resolution has grown in leaps and bounds in the last months. There are some problems, including major ones like this week's issues, but they are fewer than in previous months. The most work needs to be done in this area, but the work _is_ being done- important, foundational work, not just patches.

------------

As for the economy, LL's decision to eliminate casinos is a _good_ thing. Casinos did nothing but detriment the net SL experience. They ruined the mainland. Now that gambling is banned, what is happening? Creative people are forming brilliant, legal alternatives to gambling that are amazing and draw in content creators, users, and events to form wonderful things. Unfortunately I am not at liberty to talk about specifics (I promised the people who talked to me about these in-development projects not to), but I _can_ say to expect some wonderful user-created things that will become bigger than gambling ever was.

Also in the economic sector is LL's current decision to actively try to lower mainland prices even futher. More land released at cheaper prices means more landowners, who will require furniture, buildings, landscaping supplies, and everything else. This makes the economy even stronger.

------------

In the visual/building side, there are sculpted prims, which are completely revolutionizing building from the ground up _literally_. This is only with the first version of sculpts; in development is a second version with even more power and tools. Then there is windlight, which contrary to the opinion of some is very efficient. It will go a long way to allowing parcel owners to set the look and feel of their land, from the sky, to lighting, to fog/haze.

------------

Finally, there is the social aspect of Second Life, which is vastly important. Voice is a step in the right direction to popularize SL among the general public and make it a more vivid experience. However, there still needs to be a lot of work done. Groups, events, and search must be completely reimagined, possibly from the ground up. What we need is a Qarl Linden of social tools, to reduce the huge learning curve required to social network properly in SL.

All in all, if you take a step back and look at what is going on in SL development as a whole, the only conclusion that one can draw is that things are going better and that LL is making better decisions. The pessimists in this forum have blinders, only looking at specific issues or temporary problems than the general, positive direction SL is going in.

I wrote a tool for extracting scripts from the client cache. It should be able to get your scripts back. I haven't tested it in a long time so no idea if it still works but here it is:

http://home.comcast.net/~mailerdaemon/LSLTextExtractor.zip

No this does not use any exploit, no it does not let you view or steal scripts you don't have permissions to. It only lets you recover scripts you have seen the source of.

I think running around role play pretending to be a badass and shooting people down with my new Uzi is very stress relieving. =)

In your opinion but then again some people, shock horror, enjoyed coming here to play poker. They can't do it now but I doubt those involved in the Ginko scandal would agree with you that the ban has been good for the economy. If your new scheme is popular people are going to have trouble again with full sims, oh but it's ok because it's artistic and pretty, right?

It also means that those who have invested in land are seeing their investment fall. Tumbling land prices are not a sign of a healthy economy. For more people to own land, you'd have to see the rental market move to ownership or a shed load of new people arriving. Now if the renters move, then why would there be further requirements for buildings and landscaping supplies and everything else?

From day one, I had a habit of copy/pasting to local disk any scripts I was working on.
During day one, I couldn't open my script in an object. OMG! It loaded later after whatever grid load issues went away
I've always been a bit hyper about backing up as I go along in RL programming anyway, but that experience formed a SL habit for me.
Script a bit - copy/past
Script a bit more ....etc

I also make offworld notes on the settings of any complex prim arrangements.

This is something that I would recommend to all.

If you think an industry can be eliminated and the economy somehow benefits. You are the worst would- be economist that ever uttered words. LL has lost 400,000 USD daily( that will be 12 million lost in 30 days, pay attention). It has gotten so bad that LL no longer restarts the US spent statistic, or they start it at 1million. Trying to show that they have recovered from the gambling loss( they are no where near it). The monetary value and the land value have also suffered and have yet to recover. People need to stop cheer leading for LL or take off those rose colored glasses. There is an economic problem, i hope it gets better but i am not going to be in denial saying that nothing is wrong ( like many people here tend to do). Get well soon SL.

Whats everyone worried about? its only a game and a few numbers that only have intrinsic value.

Im finding this very entertaining, i just ungraded to premium last month so now ive 563 tier to use and 15600L coming in the next year, and it only cost me $100NZ, not a bad price at all for a years worth of entertainment, i spend that much in one good night out in the city so im not complaining.

By the way, i have 51m of tier left in my group and a few spare lindens, so if anyone know's of some cheap places where i can plant a tree, please post a SLurl, thanks.
