Losing legs in a couch

Well I am baffled.

I was at a shop a few days ago in SL and my friend and I were looking at couches. She sat on one side and I mentioned she looks silly with her legs inside the couch. She commented that she did not understand me and her legs looked fine. I just assumed it was my computer.

I sat on the couch and I did not sink into it, She said I looked fine too.

I bought the sofa. Set it up at my home. She sat in it and her legs went through the couch. She saw herself sitting fine. I sat in the chair. I looked fine to me, but she said that MY legs were now in the couch. Another friend came over and confirmed this.

I dont think it is a problem with the couch, but I can't understand why I see something different than she does on the same couch, and vice-versa.

Any thoughts? Might it be our settings in SL? Thank you.

Probably not, but it IS possible.

There is a group of settings in one of the graphics table in the Options window. There are four sliders that allow you to increase the detail of objects, flexi things, trees, and avatars (that's from memory, so the flexi one might be something different).

Sometimes when I have the objects detail turned all the way down, the shape of certain objects changes a bit... mostly like round things getting angular. If you have this setting turned all the way down, it's possible you are seeing the shapes differently from everyone else.

Another possibility (and I'm just guessing again) is a problem with the animations in your cache. It is a standard thing to do when SL acts weird on your computer to clear your cache, which is done (I think) in the Network tab of the Options window. You'll have to relog for it to take effect.

Also make sure your AO is off before you sit on scripted furniture as that will usually take priority over the furniture script. It's quite common for you to see one thing and someone else to see something differently. It happens with ruthing, with the "Wrapped in Newspaper" or Grayed Avatar effect even with the Hair and Shoes up your butt trick.

I never knew I should use the AO command before clicking on an object's animation. I'm going to have to try that.

You'll have to show me that shoes up your butt trick too Brenda. I know a lot of tricks but that one is not in my arsenal. ;)

I imagine some would pay good money for that one. It doesn't happen as often as it did, but next time it does I'll snap a pic for you (Not for publication). :p

There is the possibility that the couch was made of soft fudge, but......

I dont think it is a problem with the couch, but I can't understand why I see something different than she does on the same couch, and vice-versa.
If someone sees this happening, ask them to (clear cache) relog and see if that fixes it for them.

If a relog fixes it for them, there's nothing wrong with the couch and you're experiencing the long-gone-but-back-by-popular-demand animation bug.

In general, what you see is based on the data and software installed on *your* machine. Other people see based on the data and software on *their* machine.

In an ideal world, these are the same, so you see the same. However, if you think about it, you can see that your machine and their machine can be different in a lot of ways.

Lastly, it is almost never "lag". It is almost always "packet loss".

Are you using the newest update of the viewer? If so there is a bug in it causing a problem with synched animations. Danceballs, cuddles, etc are affected. You look normal but cannot see the animations of the person you are with. I don't know how the couch is animated but this problem sounds similiar. There is place on Jira to vote on the fix.

Well part of the problem/solution is now clear and I thank you all for helping. Today I had a lot of people over so the couches were getting max usage. Everyone was sitting well in all the seats and one guy game and sunk in one chair. Then he tried another and sank again. From your help here, I asked him to turn off his AO. He did and suddenly looked fine. He clicked on and off and he would go in and out of the couch. We tried this on a feew places in different seats.

So that solves one part. Now for me, I have fallen too and I dont have an AO...but today have not seen the problem so maybe for me it was my cache. Personally as long as I see everyone sitting well, I ma happy, even if they can't :-)))))....of course, they will never come back and I will be stuck alone with sinking couches.

This is why I leave the sit portion of my AO empty, I don't have to remember to turn it off when I use stuff! ;)
