Hi, I've made several musical instruments that I'll be posting for free on SLX. They're all based on instruments I own, with clips of me playing them built in. Here's a pic of what I have so far:

Does anyone know where I could find other free instruments to help gather a nice free collection? Also, any free animations would be great.

The instruments pictured above, from left to right:

1982 Martin HD-28 guitar
196x Guild Cedar-top classical guitar
1965 Fender Jazzmaster electric guitar
196x National "LP", with Gibson Les Paul pickups (490R/498T)
Fender Blues Deluxe guitar amp
Native Instruments B4 organ (Hammond clone), with Leslie rotating speaker cabinet
1976 Rhodes Stage 73 electric piano

Since added:
1997 Jubal archtop guitar
Ampeg bass stack
Warwick bass (1-prim)
Mikes, stands, and PA speakers. Mike has a simple anim for handheld use.

Future plans include:

Hohner Special 20 harmonica with Sure Biscuit mike
more audio clips?
SLX listing

UPDATE:
Here's where to find them:

There is a free electric guitar over at Yadni's. I don't know who made it.

Thanks folks!

The drum kit in the stuff Lostmedia sent me is KILLER! A bit primmy at 120 prims, I reduced it to 60 prims without sacrificing too much. But the original is great, and 4 of the 6 instruments play a note when you click them which is cool. And the band-in-a-box stuff is fun too!

Racal's Marshall stacks are most excellent as well.

Thanks Bree; I'll check out Yadni's. 1-prim electric guitars are easy, though. Sure, they disappear when you look at them side-on, but otherwise they're fine.

Francesca, you make me smile, so I'll do that harp soon!

I've added a few pieces; I now have floor monitors, PA stacks, mikes & stands, and a Warwick bass. And I've added a couple keyboard clips to the Hammond and Rhodes, with a menu to choose them.

Here's the latest. All wireless, of course!

Racal, please forgive me for using the Marshall stack as a bass rig. :) I have an Ampeg cab and GK head on the way. I should park an LP or Strat in front of the Mahrshalls. :D

Sending you a box I have shoved all the instruments in my inventory. Not sure if any in there are ones you don't have.

I like the Hammond and the Jazzmaster. Funky stuff. Most of the time i use the basic 'Linden' guitars: Flying-V, Explorer and Jazz Bass all of which are long-standing freebies that I've retextured a bit. I've got a few freebie instruments that I've made and I'll have to put them out and about soon.

Watch this, Leslie:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=edi1g4zSFo8

Trust me, you wouldn't want to watch a video of me making these things! Lots of "oops, no, not that. Hmmm not that either. No, this isn't right, try yet again ...."

Frankly, though, what I did was simple in concept. I started with a 1-prim version -- a clear box with the right dimensions (only thin), with the picture of the front on it. Then I used hollowed cylinders to get as close to the shape of the picture as possible -- 3 for each "bout" and 4 more at the waist, IIRC. Then I set the width of the first prim to the width of the guitar and added the back texture. After that, a bit of adjusting of the sides to compromise for inconsistencies in my photos.

Taking good photos makes a big difference. I used a flash camera, so my shots are a little angled to avoid glare. (Next time I will be sure to angle towards the top side of the guitar so the highlights are on the top -- it's this way for the Martin but not the Guild.) Being slightly offset caused some discrepancies; it would be far better to use a remote flash or natural lighting. Also, you need to know how to make the alpha mask for the pictures (transparency). Can't do this stuff in-world. I use Gimp, a free image processing program that I barely know how to use other than making alpha masks!

For the sides, I used a veneer texture (I have a set a friend got me, not sure where from) and then adusted the color to match the back picture. I used low shininess to get the nice gloss -- not sure it's apparent in the pics but looks great when you move or the guitar does, because the highlights move.

For the Martin, I made the soundhole transparent, which is cool. However, I had to add another prim to put a texture on the inside of the back -- otherwise you can see right through the back when looking into the hole. I like this effect but didn't bother with the Guild.

Also, for the Martin I added a prim neck and headstock. Fortunately, Martin headstocks are very simple shapes -- 1 prim does the job well enough for me. I didn't bother with prim machine heads (tuners), to keep the prim count reasonable -- the tuners are visible from the front because I left them in the image. Since I had a prim neck and headstock, I left those parts of the back image clear. For the Guild, I didn't bother with prim neck and headstock since they looked good in the photo and a prim classical headstock shape would have been a hassle. So, for the Guild I used two prims for the back: one the full thickness of the body (for the back), and one only as thick as the neck (to show the back of the neck). For simplicity in building, both of these prims are the same full length of the guitar, and the front picture is on one of them -- the rest of the faces being totally clear.

Might be fun to give a class some time. I have no idea how to arrange it. I'll be too busy for the next couple weeks, but after that perhaps. Unfortunately, my SL time is unpredictable and somewhat limited.

HTH :)

Thanks Marianne. Actually, I have all my items set "anyone can copy". When I get a moment I'll post an SLURL and you're all free to come by and pick up copies of anything you like, rather than waiting for me to consider them "mostly done" enough to put up on SLX.

I play classic keyboards: piano, Hammond, and Rhodes, with a little Moog synth now and then. So, I sure do need a piano. Haven't decided yet whether to make a grand piano (which would be a lot of work) or just what I actually use when playing live, a digital. Hmmm, decisions, decisions ...

Alazarin, I got that Jazzmaster just to make a deal go through -- my guitarist wanted a Mesa but had to sell his Twin first; the guy who wanted the Twin needed to unload the Jazzmaster first; so I bought it. But what a sweet bird it is; those pickups sound incredible especially though a single-ended boutique amp (sure wish I had one). It's been my main electric since I got it back in 83. It's a 1965 guitar but not valuable as a collector's item since the neck was replaced, and my best friend did me a favor and painted the body. Only later did I find out that cut its value in half! Sure does look better though.

A confesion about the Hammond -- what I actually own is Native Instruments B4, software I run on my computer to emulate the Hammond and Leslie. (The images are from the NI B4 product.) What a lovely piece of software it is, too. The guys at the blues jams love it.

I'd love copies of some of those... I was tempted to add a 'live in SL' band that would at least look like they were playing for a club I work for... But I couldn't find parts I needed (like stands and drum sets)... As a former trumpeter back in high school I still think fondly of music (though never enjoyed playing by myself and a decade out of practice now) and would like to have my SL reflect that...

I wil donate my recent play keyboard animation

I am a musician, and singer in RL. I have recently made a looped animation (Play Keyboard) I will send it to you In-World. Would be nice if you had a group, and we could get together, and jam once and awhile. I have a flute, in world, and would love to see what we could put together, as a SL Band.

Thanks Bell for the keyboard anim! It's great, only doesn't quite work with my setup because the keyboard player is seated and your anim is standing. It's a good one though. :)

Anyone who got a copy of my stuff earlier might want to come by and upgrade.

I fixed a problem causing the stools to send me IMs causing email when I'm offline. I think it's an SL bug, but I found a workaround. (It uses IMs to tell the seated person when they change positions, and should only ever IM the person seated! Thus I could hardly get them when offline.)

I also fixed a problem with the best one in the lot, the Martin guitar. The face of the guitar would occasionally disappear due to the dreaded 'alpha sort' problem. I found a workaround for that.

Cheers
Jeff

Hi! I was trying to create my own electric piano. I managed to create the piano itself and the base, now I want to add some script to make it possible to be played. How can I do it?

Please post your question in the Scripting Tips forum. If you upload 10-second audio clips (L$10 per clip to upload, just like textures), I have scripts I'll post that will allow them to be played via click / menu.

PS: you should take a look at my electric piano (Fender Rhodes). I'm sure someone can do better, but feel free to use any parts from it, including the scripts and audio clips.
