It takes a keen eye to look at a swamp in the middle of Florida and see a fantastic resort destination, but Walt Disney had a dream. Governor Linden is in search of Residents who have a similar ability to breathe life into impossible dreams.

Linden World
The Governor has decreed that there should be an Amusement Park in Second Life the likes of which the real world has never dared imagine, and he’s donating two new regions to house it. Thirty-eight concessionaires will win the right to turn the new regions into a Second Life Coney Island, completely free of land and object taxes. These lucky few will be charged with the development of attractions to amuse and delight their fellow residents, with an emphasis on interactive content – rides, shows, games, contraptions, shooting galleries, and other assorted delights. Less popular attractions will eventually pass their concessions on to new promoters, but the most successful offerings will earn the chance to continue their tax free run.

The Fine Print
Creating a popular attraction requires both skill and wisdom, so plots in the amusement park will only be offered to Residents who are at least a month old. The new regions are located west of Dore and Bonifacio. Admission charges and betting are appropriate, but plot holders will not be permitted to sell anything beyond amusement and entertainment. One voting station will be allowed for each attraction. Developers are restricted to 400 prims per plot, and scripts must be altered or deactivated upon Linden request. The parcels are 36 meters square. All attractions will be of the PG variety and must conform to all Community Standards. Concessionaires need to pay the plot purchase price, but this outlay will be refunded when the plot is surrendered. Popularity of amusement park attractions will be measured by ‘dwell’ – determined by the number of residents who visit an attraction and the amount of time they spend there.

Timeline
Applications for amusement park concessions must be received by 8am PST on Tuesday, September 30th. Interested Residents may apply by responding to the thread link below or sending an IM to Nova Linden. The Governor will review the applications and randomly select 40 Residents from those eligible. Residents offered plots must purchase parcels from Nova during these hours: Oct. 1: 5 to 7, Oct 2: 1 to 4, Oct 3: 5 to 8, Oct 4: 3 to 6 and 8 to 11. Any unclaimed parcels after Oct. 4 will be offered to others on the waiting list. The popularity of the first round of amusement park attraction will be measured using ‘dwell’, from October 13 – 27. Results will be announced on October 29, with less visited attractions vacating the park no later than November 2.

Do you have the vision to bring the Governor’s amusement park to life? To apply, respond to this thread or IM Nova Linden in world. For questions and comments, link to here.

Additional information and Town Halls
09-26-2003 10:38
The two new regions are online - Coney and Luna - west of Stage 4 in Dore.

It’s great if you want to invite others to build on your parcel or if you want to collaborate with neighbors to build a mega attraction over multiple plots.

Although Linden World is based on an amusement park theme, you don’t have to restrict your imagination. We want to encourage all types of amusements: team games, puzzles, obstacle courses, Rube Goldberg contraptions – whatever you can think of.

There will be two town halls to answer any questions you might have – Monday, September 29 at 4:30 pm and 8 pm Pacific time - in the new sims, west of Dore and Bonifacio.

In response to some questions: The plot owners will have to agree to have to the build attached to the ground and be appealing from ground level because we want the visitors to be walking around the park. Participants will also have to agree to remove noise and light objects if a Linden decides they are causing a problem for neighbors.

More Rules and links to Town Halls
09-30-2003 14:49
Here are the links to transcripts of the Town Hall discusions of LindenWorld held Sept. 29. We had a total of 60 residents attend.

4:30 Town Hall

8:00 Town Hall

A couple of more rules

During the time that dwell is measured, plot owners are limited to three events per week, including events that are scheduled by friends.

If two or more owners of adjacent parcels want to build cooperatively, then the combined land will be treated as one unit, and all get the benefit of the average dwell over the multiple plots.

The first batch of World Builders

Congratulations to these residents selected at random for parcels in the new LindenWorld amusement park. There were 63 qualified applicants for these 38 spaces.

If your name is here, you need to purchase a plot from Nova during these hours: Oct. 1: 5 to 7, Oct 2: 1 to 4, Oct 3: 5 to 8, Oct 4: 3 to 6 and 8 to 11. Any unclaimed parcels after Oct. 4 will be offered to others on the waiting list.

We really look forward to seeing what you build.

The order of this list also reflects the order of who gets to choose a lot - out of those who show up on Oct. 1 at 5 pm.

We strongly encourage those who didn’t make it on the list to investigate the possibility of collaborating with those who did. And if you got picked and you are looking for help, feel free to post in the Projects section of the Forums.

Those not selected will have a chance at spaces that open up in the beginning of November. More about that process later.

LindenWorld Updates -
10-09-2003 16:31
Please join us for the official “opening” on Monday, October 13. Philip Linden will cut the ribbon and open the gate at 5 PM PST.

You probably already know that the most popular half of the attractions will be invited back for another month. In addition the top four attractions will be offered the chance to double in size (and number of prims) in November.

Finally, in terms of LindenWorld crashes - a note from one of our developers Andrew Linden on Monday.
“I noticed the sim hangups in my mailbox this morning. Since they were caused by "deep thinks" in the physics engine, the offending primitives should be deleted on the next restart . If anyone is missing content (especially if it is an object with complex concave primitives) then whatever got deleted is a likely candidate for the cause of the problem.”

Pre-Testing in 1.1, Banning, and Dwell
10-15-2003 17:20
Thanks to everyone who came out to the opening. The amusement park was satuarated with people and the performance suffered. We are trying to reduce the current lag and hope for a significant boost with 1.1. But come back check it out now that there are less than 30 visitors in each region.

Pre-Testing in 1.1 -
So much is changing in 1.1 that the builders may want to copy some of your key elements and rez them in the 1.1 preview to if they work differently.

Banning -

One LindenWorld participant asked if it was ok to ban people from a particular amusement park parcel. The answer is yes and 1.1 will make this easy to do.

Dwell -

We've started tracking dwell in LindenWorld and will publish some interim figures soon. The dwell that decides which participants will get to continue for another month is different that the dwell that will give all landowners bonuses once 1.1 arrives. Here is how they differ:

General SL Bonus dwell starting with 1.1-
-Based on percentage of the time online that day that a person spends on any of your plots
-DOES include owner
-Requires a 5 minute minimum dwell for each person that counts.

LW amusement park competition dwell -
-Based simply on total number of people/ minutes on your site
-Does NOT include owner
-NO five minute minimum required.

Addressing the lag in LindenWorld -
10-18-2003 12:08
In order to improve perfomance in Luna and Coney, we encourage the participants to set the draw distance on their land down to 64 meters. This is really easy to do, just select the land and then "edit land" and then hit the arrow next to the number until it reads 64.

This means that visitors on your land can only see 64 meters away so they will have less distraction and will tend to hang around longer.

*edit: Lowering the draw distance is optional rather than mandatory.

Here's the accumulative person/minutes of dwell for October 13 – 27 in LindenWorld. (The combined names represent an attraction that covers two parcels. The dwell is the average of the two plots.)

The top 19 attractions – thru Nick Fairlight - will be invited back for another month. The top four will be offered the chance to double their size. We will invite the next 13 people on the waiting list to have a chance to participate starting November 3.

Thanks to all these people and their friends who created LindenWorld 1.0. And thanks to all of you who visted. We hope to see you back for 1.1
