I've just picked up myself one of the new Intel Mac laptops and it runs SL fine enough, but the performance is pretty lacking. Does anyone know if there will be a Universal supported version of SL in the near future?
Thanks!

And for some numbers, see
/276/d5/74902/3.html#post893237 (The post shows the Mac Intel Universal Binary doubling the frame rate on what I assume is a comparable PPC. Running under Rosetta, however, it's less than half the frame rate. You might want to read the whole thread, too...or not.) |

SOS- recording SL on a Intel mac!
03-04-2006 00:31
I´m making a film about a SL, and need to record the game, hopefully in not to bad quality. I´ts going to be screened on a TV. I´ve got the new intel Macbookpro. But there are still some troubles is´nt it? If you have any recommendation how to solve the problem with the intelmac and if you know any good "recording" software, please do´nt hesitate to send me a quick answer. Thank!

Thank! /S troubles? the only trouble is that current SL is a PPC program, not Universal or x86... which means it has to run under rosetta to emulate a PPC processor.. this makes it run extremely slow. There is no way to make it faster until the Lindens release a Universal Binary version that must be way late... at first they were hoping to have a beta out at the end of janurary... its the begining of March and still nothing. |

Why the delay?

What is the hold up?
We need a universal binary version of SL now. SL running in rosetta is barely usable. But it does run? is it usable under rosetta? What are you getting for FPS? I have the new iMac 17' with 512MB and I can run SL with ~5FPS and that is with a few other programs running also like Skype (which is also not a universal binary yet). |

We need a Mac Intel universal binary now.

I get about the same here on my new Intel iMac. The graphics are gorgeous on the 20 inch screen, but game play is horrilble. It is okay if you are standing in a room chatting with someone else, but anything more than that is a lesson in frustration. We need a Mac Intel universal binary now.
G4 powerbook does a much better job at this point. I get about 1.7 ~ 3.0 FPS on my iMac (1Gb RAM) |

Wonderful! That's all I have to say!
I downloaded and ran the alpha universal binary on my Intel iMac 17" 512MB RAM machine - runs like a DREAM! I was on SL for about 2 hours. No stability issues. Textures took a LONG time to load after initial install but maybe thats expected. In the sky, I was getting frame rates of 50-60 !!! In a meeting with my friends - 8 people, moderate prim count, enclosed room, 25-30 fps. I am VERY impressed! I will try turning graphics details up to see how it fares. But overall - fantastic! Thank you Lindens for your hard work!! |

In fact comparing this Alpha build to that of my PC stable build.. this alpha starts faster. |

Sweet!

Just had a few minutes to test it this morning. Let's just say that I can walk around the welcome area with no problems. Saw FPS of +40 in most areas! Very nice!

Damn! Time to start pricing MacBooks -- if only they made a 17" version.... (wallet breathes a sigh of relief -- maybe!)

Its wonderful I was at the Rainbow Tiger when it was pretty packed 15 - 20 people (all furs with all our wonderful lag inducing AV's *grin* ) and I was still getting 13 - 15 fps, running in full screen mode.
Very good job LL *HUG* _____________________

I know that ColdFire has an Intel iMac -- sounds great! Can anyone report on a MacBook Pro? (and please mention which type of Mac you're trying it on -- there are now three flavors of Intel Macs.)
