For some reason I'm installing Hardy Heron with Wubi.

What do I do to install SL once Linux is installed?

You can either use on of the custom debs listed here on the forums ..
Or as I do just download the Linux client, Extract it , and execute the secondlife.sh, ( choose either run , or run in terminal.
( With you using Wubi, which is installed within windows I'm not sure if you will have restricted drivers enabled for your video card,( Last Time I tried wubi it borked bigtime , but it has grown up alot lately. To check open a terminal window and type ... glxgears
if you get an error then you will indeed need to install restricted drivers for your card, these are in System ... Administration... Hardware Drivers, There is a forum dedicated to Wubi if your linux knowledge is limited which may help.
If this is your first venture into FOSS then welcome and dont get disheartened if things dont work straight away .. It gets easier, I promise.

Personally I get a much better frame rate for SL using linux, I hope the experience is not too painfull for you. Voice and video are likely to be the areas you will have a little trouble with, but with patience you will get there .

My Linux knowledge is essentially zero.

I did stop pronouncing it with a long "i" sound a while back, so I guess my knowledge isn't quite at the zero point.

Linux is installed now, and it was nice enough to ask me about installing the drivers for the video card, so when I ran glxgears, I saw gears moving, which I suppose means it's working.

I don't know what "debs" are.

I also will need to get the Synergy keyboard / mouse sharing program running. It's installed, supposedly.

debs = filename.deb

If you think of it as an installer program like setup.exe you will get the general idea. (It's not really an installer program, deb's are the files the built-in installer program uses to install programs)

But for now I'd just download the Linux client from the download page to your Desktop, double click it and extract it (it works like a .zip) and run as Bluesman posted.

Then post any problems you run into and we'll go from there.
In this country we actually DO pronounce it LiNnux, but you say potatto we say potatoe and all that, It's one of those hotly argued subjects amongst the various forums, but since I heard Linus on a voice interview calling it LiNnux I'm happy to carry on doing so and have done for the almost ten years I've been using it.
If you want to see what applications it has to offer , open ... System.... Administration.... Synaptic Package Manager.. & have a browse through the various sections on the left hand side. You will find there are usually many apps to perform the same job, Some do it better than others. Three I cant do without though are The Gimp, Blender & Open Office. If you use MSN you will be spoilt for choice but either Pidgin or AMsn work flawlessly.

Second Life is now running on Ubuntu.

There's a problem with the text in the menus. Some of the letters in the main menu are distorted.

I've had this problem under Windows before and read of others having this problem.

If my memory serves me right it is something I would fix under Windows using the Catalyst Control Center.

If such a thing has been installed I don't know about it.

I think I have made a little progress about setting up Synergy. I think I now how to edit a system text file with a graphical editor now.

I used to pronounce Linux like the name Linus because it reminded me of the character Linus from Peanuts. I got mocked out it by people who thought Lynn-ix was the only proper way to say it.

I never really wondered why they thought that.

I personally use Nvidia, but after a little research for you there is (admittedly experimental) A Catalyst Control Center for Linux.
This page is the destructions people seem to be having the most success with getting it to work..
Most should hold true for Hardy...

http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Feisty_Installation_Guide Theres asection covering ATI config tool.

This post will also hold some possible info for you ...

Like I say I use Nvidia so this is the best I can do for you .

Oh, that more than fine, thanks.

I can't get registered at the Ubuntu forums due to "This reCAPTCHA key isn't authorized for the given domain. More info" .

I don't suppose I can post in the ubuntu beginner's forum as a guest, eh?

I just made an account ( unverifiable due to to non existent email , BUT the account was created...
Do you run any kind of script blocking? I.e. NoScript in firefox, If you do then allow the forum address and all will be fine, Sometimes though those twin words can be a little crazy to read, Why they recently went to the twin word verify I'm human thing I don't know :(.
Rapidshares new system is even worse , Find the four letters that have a cat blended into them ... It really plays havoc with my old eyes :(..

If you still cant make an account then IM me with a disposable email addy and desired username and I'll make one for you with a temp password, you can then log in and change to your own personal email and change the password.
But the anti bot thing is working for me, screwy as it is :D .

I did eventually get registered at the Ubuntu forums.

I found one thread that describes the distorted text problem: /327/d9/241174/1.html#post1972539 .
