Hey all... trying Linux (Well, Ubuntu 7.04 at the very least) for the first time, and after downloading and extracting the latest SecondLife_i686_1_18_1_2 Linux installer, I try to run it. However, after clicking "run" from the prompt that asks if I want to view or run the file, nothing happens at all. I'm sure it's probably just some silly simple solution to this, but due to my inexperience with Linux, I'm not sure where to even begin when troubleshooting.
Thanks for the advice,
Talon Lardner

I had the same problem(probably). I'm under Ubuntu 7.06 and I tried to start sl from the terminal, I went to the directory where sl is installed and I typed "./secondlife" (with out " of course) and the risult is:
./secondlife: 68: bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin: not found
I watched in /bin and that file is there.
Which could be the problem? Thank you very much

Try downloading the test version to your desktop, extract it and double click "secondlife".

If you know where you unpacked secondlife, do this: Naviagate to the following: Applications->Accessories->Terminal If you unpacked secondlife on your desktop type: cd Desktop/SecondLife_(FULLNAME_OF_FOLDER_HERE_OR_JUST_HIT_TAB_KEY) Now type: ./secondlife If secondlife crashes, select the contents of the "terminal window" and post here.

From: KillerMonkey Spire Did you fully extract the .tar.bz2 file or just the "secondlife" file? I thought I did extract the whole thing, but I'll give it a second extracting just to be safe. Hmm... no luck yet. I'll try redownloading. edit: Nope, even with a fresh download of the linux client, it still shows me the same text.

For those who still cant get SL to run on Ubuntu, try opening the "secondlife" script and replace "sh" with "bash" at the first line.

From: Asriazh Frye [...] and replace "sh" with "bash" at the first line. Should http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-379 be reopened?

At the very least, an error message should be added. It took me a while to find this forum post, and the Jira entry. A more informative error message would have saved me 1-2 hours. ./secondlife: 68: bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin: not found I don't know if it is possible to add an error message for this problem, but I know that it is possible to add a shell-level error message for other similiar problems. For example, if you have the ia32 package, but do not have the ia32-gtk package, you get this error: ~/SecondLife_i686_1_18_1_2$ ./secondlife bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory The part about "error while loading shared libraries: libgtk" is golden. -Adz

I have an old Notebook here, Intel Pentium M 1,3 GHz, ATI Mobility 7500 32MB and 1GB RAM with Ubuntu 7.04 and a Gnome Desktop.
I just extracted all into a folder, started secondlife from the shell and all went fine..
Well.. hardware is a bit low, but it is ok if you just want to sen an IM or so...

Well.. hardware is a bit low, but it is ok if you just want to sen an IM or so... The problem is 64-bit computers running 64-bit Linux need to install 32-bit compatibility mode. Otherwise SL fails silently. Many linux users have 32-bit hardware, or have already installed 32-bit compatability drivers, named "ia32",. The problem comes up when, like me, you install linux on 64-bit CPU and SecondLife is the first 32-bit application you try to run.

Thanks for creating that. Do I need to add any specific comments about my problem? From the title of the entry, it looks like you understood the problem.

failed to install ia32-libs
09-27-2007 12:55
forgive me if this is a RTFM post, Im new to linux. I'm running Ubuntu 7.04 on amd64 I extracted the tar file to the desktop (as intructed - but this seems an untidy place to put applications?) It crashes silently ( as reported earlier in this thread) I tried using synaptic to install the "ia32" package, but it refuses - with a message saying that " the following packages have unresolved dependencies" ia32-libs: Depends: lib32stdc++6 but it is not going to be installed Depends: lib32gcc1 but it is not going to be installed Depends: lib32z1 but it is not going to be installed Depends: libc6-i386 but it is not going to be installed If I were a bodger, I'd just install those dependancies and see where that gets me... but im not, so i wont
