Please give the 1.18.4.x Release Candidate a try, see if that helps.

Thanks for your reply Tofu!

I haven't built a Second Life Client from scratch before (is there a build for 1.18.4.0 for linux i686 fedora?), so this is what I did:

1. downloaded the libs, client, artwork, fmodapi, and c-ares
2. extracted everything to linden
3. put the c-ares in linden/libraries and ran ./configure and make install
4. copied the fmodapi api's as directed
5. created and ran the make-SL file

This is what I got:

[root@localhost secondlife]# make-SL
Extracting the files from the archives...
Copying fmodapi files...
Moving the sources to /usr/src/SL...
Sorry... You need c-ares installed in your system to compile this version of the client.
Try: http://daniel.haxx.se/projects/c-ares/
[root@localhost secondlife]#

I'm not sure why I got this error because the make install seemed to work OK for c-ares... but I don't know what I'm doing really... and I guess I got something wrong.

A 1.18.4.x for testing can be downloaded here:

Thanks for your help, Tofu!

Installing SL Client 1.18.4.0 didn't fix the problem, but I think I'm going to put this issue aside for now and wait for Fedora 8 to be released on Nov, 8 and then do a fresh install of both.

I get this error very consistently, often try to log in for 30 minutes or more, ending in frustration.THis has been my main reason for giving up land or even bothering to spend any money there. If i can't log in whats the sense. The lack of help or info on this subject is equally frustrating

DNS and 1.8.4.2
11-06-2007 05:40
I am getting the following error in 1.8.4.2 RC. Production and Beta clients run fine.

(Fedora Core 6, x86_64)

bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin: relocation error: /lib/libnss_dns.so.2: symbol __libc_res_nsearch, version GLIBC_PRIVATE not defined in file libresolv.so.2 with link time reference

**Problem resolved. I need to get in to the habit of removing the contents of the secondlife install directory - there was some garbage in there, including an old libresolve.so.2.

This may or may not help, but check /etc/resolv.conf and see what nameservers come up. If the first one is something like 192.168.0.1 it could be a problem in your router.

This is a DNS problem outside of the SL servers. A local ISP or such may not update or resolve names quickly enough. Linux folks are lucky as they can point to other DNS servers, or run a local bind service and update from a known good service.

Having a DNS server of 192.168.x.x happens when you use a DSL/Cable router, it becomes your DNS server as your local addresses can't see the internet on the otherside of the router so it must use the router for DNS. Just be sure your ISP is up to date, sometimes this means power cycling your router.

Right. Assuming this is a DNS resolve problem, the trouble can't be at SL. It is somewhere on the client's system (computer/router/modem/etc.).

First, I have to say this (for the benefit of people who don't know): 192.168.x.1 is the gateway address of any given router. There is no DNS server on the planet with any form of this address as its IP.

Wnen 192.168.x.1 consistently comes up as the first DNS server in DSL service, it indicates the presence of a bug in some DSL modem/routers (such as my little Actiontec piece of crap). Windows and Mac bypass this problem, probably by testing the two reported DNS IP's and using the one that reports back first. Slowly, Linux distros are being fixed to do the same thing. Ubuntu 7.04 and OpenSUSE 10.3 both fixed their distro's inability to deal with this problem, and I suspect the rest will follow suit (if they haven't already).

Power-cycling the modem will not fix this problem, there is a bug in the device. The only way to make it work properly in those distros/versions where it still is a problem is to manually turn off DHCP and hard-code all the IP's in manually.

I tested my Actiontec unit with every Linux distro I could get my hands on, and even had a couple of Windows machines to hook up to it. Every one of them, always, reported the first DNS server as 192.168.0.1. Each and every time. I have never seen this problem with cable modems (they have other problems all their own).

You could try the tip at :

And see if that helps.

If I understand this, what that's doing is installing a local DNS server on your own pc. I haven't tried doing this kind of thing, so I don't know how complicated it is or what problems it may cause, but if what I do know is right it should help speed up any http stuff you do, not just sl. (Such as web browsing.)

I may try it on my own computer :-)

You guys could be right about the DSL modem having something to do with the DNS problems I have been having. I have since switched to cable and have not had any problems with DNS so far.

However, I had same DSL modem for over two years before moving to my new address at the beginning of October, and I never had this problem during that time

The main reason for the switch to cable from DSL was because Bell could not find and fix some intermittent static/noise problems that I had on my phone line, which caused my DSL connection to frequently drop and also to become quite slow. So, I tend to believe that the quality and speed of the DSL connection may also have something to do with the problem as well.
