From: Patrick Torgeson
I downloaded the latest version of the Alpha client (1.11.0.11), and after struggling for a bit with my distro (SimplyMEPIS 6.0), I got SL running (I had to change my colour depth from 16 to 24 bits).

I know it was there on earlier versions, but this latest version of the client doesn't seem to have the "settings.ini" file. Has it been renamed to something else? I've found that the video memory tweak (GraphicsCardMemorySetting 4 for 256Mb) for my nVidia video card does my SL experience a world of good.

That post is not really a tip ;-)

However, settings.ini still exists, and in the same place. The old one from the previous alpha cleint seems to work fine with me. Search this thread for info on it - tip: start at the top, before posting at the end :p

I think, SL now still reads a "legacy" settings.ini if it's there, but the new prefreences are stored in a "settings.xml" file. I didn't have time to examine the contents of the new file yet.

I have examined settings.xml and as far as I can judge it contains same info with settings.ini. Just in XML format.

I must note, that I have never seen settings.ini. My comparison is based on what I read on this forum.

XML has replaced the formating of many of the files. The new xml also gives handy tips on what the allowed settings are.

How do people feel about my un-sticking this thread? Most of the tips in it are likely out of date and thus perhaps confusing. If a fresher tips thread comes along, that might be made sticky instead.

I am happy about it.

The Tips and Tricks were mainly for the VERY rudimentary Linux SL client we had at the beginning.

And a fresher tips thread my take a while - since the updates are coming at such a pace!

However, when we have a Stable Beta, a tips threads would be fantastic for a) getting it running at all, and b) optimizing linux settings for SL - which is a Whole New Ball Game!

It is still unclear to some that a 3D (proprietary) driver is needed, and that these come from the ATI and NVidia Websites, and are usually not included with their distribution. So such things should still be in the new Tips & Tricks thread.

Also basic installation SL at all... Linux IS attracting newbies (to Linux).

In any case, the current Tips and Tricks thread has become obsolete in its present form, since most of it was manually editing the settings.ini (remember that?) to get SL to run at all :D

ALL fixed by you, Tofu! :) :) :)

How about a link on the alpha download page to NVidia and ATi, where people can click on to get the 3D drivers? This way you make the users aware that a graphics driver is needed and send them right to the proper download page.

Hi Zi :)

If you give me the link to the ATI drivers, I will add it and the NVidia download page link to the Download Post.

Edit: It's OK, Zi - Google knew where the drivers were :D I have updated the Download Sticky First Post with the link.
