Before doing the copy you requested, I noticed that "ls -l" showed that library to be the same size in both directories. "cmp" produced no output, which I think means the libraries are identical. Nevertheless, I renamed the existing library and copied the 18.2.1 version and saw no improvement with the newer code. All of this was true and I got the same results with both the 18_3_5 and the 18_5_3 versions of the code.

FYI
I am running i686_secondlife-1-18-5-3 on a 3 year old Gateway m675prr laptop with 3Ghz CPU and 2GB RAM. I am running under the new MEPIS 7.0 Linux distro running KDE 3.5.8. Video chip is Radeon 9600. The glxgears --printfps gives about 3400 fps.

Overall, the only problem I have is an occasional runaway while flying. The avatar stops responding to the keyboard and keeps flying along the vector path it was on until SL logs me out or I click the menu Quit option. On restart SL wants to send a bug report, which I allow. My sticky keys, slow keys and mouse gestures are off.

Occasionally the response slows and SL gets jumpy. The Ctl-Sft-1 sequence shows that the fps rate drops from 45+ to 4 or 5, and the bandwidth usage climbs high. I'm on a 10Mb/s cable connection and I occasionally achieve 1.5Mb/s download speeds, so I have the bandwidth capability, but apparently SL doesn't. Last Friday I was at Science Friday. The response was fairly decent when there were less than a dozen avatars in attendance. By the time the show started the avatar count was 100. Scanning left or right while looking around, changing camera angles, etc. got VERY slow and choppy.

Other than these the Linux client I am using works OK.

Raphory and Zeus (and anyone else for whom 1.18.3 is bad but 1.18.2 is good) - can you try copying the libSDL-1.2.so.0 from the lib dir of 1.18.2 into the lib dir of 1.18.3 and let me know if that changes anything?
Thanks.

Hi Tofu, I put libSDL-1.2.so.0 from /usr/local/games/second-life/SecondLife_i686_1_18_2_1/lib/ to /usr/local/games/second-life/SecondLife_i686_1_18_6_2_RELEASECANDIDATE/lib/ and started the game.

Same punition for me :-( After few seconds in-world, everything freezes, including my X Window session. I had to force the computer to shutdown manually.

Regards

(and happy new year to all!)

I don't know if this is a clue, but when SL was flaking out yesterday (4 Jan) afternoon SLT, I started getting the same kind of "packet out of sequence" and "dead object" messages in my log in the 18.2.1 code that I always get on the new code these days. Windows was still working fine. A little later, I heard they were rebooting all the sims a few at a time, and the problem was gone.

Maybe a useless detail but maybe it will mean something to someone.

Thanks to Tofu and all who've suggested things. I'll be happy to try any more ideas that may help.

18.2.1 runs better for me too

I have a dual processor HP laptop with an ATI 1600X video set. 18.5.3 is unusable at even the lowest graphics settings. Version 18.2.1 runs very smooth even with graphics set to much higher levels!

If it is the GL library that is the problem please! give us a version using native ati video!!

HI all,

just an update on this subject: after a fresh installation of Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon, the problem is still occuring with the last versions of SL (every version after 18.2.1), including the 1.19 beta version.

I noticed that SL and the whole X System crash ONLY when I start to move my avatar in-world. If I stay motionless, IMing to friends and caming around, it's alright. But if I start to move around, the crash occurs after few seconds. X System tries to start again, but don't succeed (flicking screens and mouse pointer appearing from time to time, then black screen).

Version 18.2.1 still works flawlessly...

Regards

Strange. Could someone suffering from the 1.18.3.5 slowdown (not any other slowdown :) ) please file an issue in pjira.secondlife.com ?
