this is the helpful post from last year, but this error is already corrected...

The xorg.conf file already reads "Modes".

Login as root, or open a root terminal, or just type "su -" at a terminal and provide the root password.

Then, type "init 1". All the accessory services, including X, will be turned off. You may need to re-login as root in a simple terminal.

Install the drivers by running them - again as root.

Once everything is in place, you can return to your graphic interface with "init 5".

[root@localhost home]# init 1
bash: init: command not found

there seems to be no command found called init :(
any other suggestions?

I found the init path.
then it told me I had to go to telinit 3. which I did.
then I acepted the agreement.
then it failed telling me I have no cc or gcc install or no path to it.

So I guess now I have to learn how to install gcc and set a path to it.
I would think that should be installed because something had to compile fedora and all the base installed applications on it. right?

or maybe not since it seems to be package based?

Edit:
evidently the gcc must be installed.

$ dmesg
Linux version 2.6.20-1.2933.fc6 (brewbuilder@hs20-bc2-4.build.redhat.com) (gcc v
ersion 4.1.1 20070105 (Red Hat 4.1.1-51)) #1 SMP Mon Mar 19 11:38:26 EDT 2007

could it be the "telinit 3" is shuting the gcc down?

Init is part of every desktop linux system. It's there somewhere.

I noticed you became root, but your home directory remained "home", which is not what I'd expect. Probably you left out the "-" in the "su -" I suggested before. Thus you didn't inherit the COMPLETE root environment.

"telinit" is a link to "init", and I'm very puzzled by its request of a compiler. A compiler is not needed to switch run levels! (And the kernel string you reported just says that your actual kernel has BEEN compiled with gcc 4.1.1, not that gcc is installed.)

Anyway, just to be sure, use "/sbin/init 1".

I keep thinking that you should do "su -", with the minus at the end, inheriting the ENTIRE root environment, and not just "su", which doesn't inherit the environment, including the appropriate path.

you are correct I did su and not su-. because su- fails.

I did tellinit 3 after su because it told me to when I ran the driver package fron init 1

It needs gcc to compile something needed in the Xorg it is not finding before it can install the drive. and it is not findiing the path.

It's not "su-", it's "su -" (su, space, minus). Be careful about the instructions given, or the results may be extremely erratic.

Anyway, your problem isn't in switching run levels. You seem able to do that with the init commands. However the driver package (nvidia? ATI? what about some more info?) needs to recompile a small portion of the driver to match your kernel. That's why it asks for gcc.

I suppose you could just install gcc from your installation discs - I think in Fedora jargon that's the "development package group". Also, telling us the exact distro version could help you finding appropriate precompiled drivers, if you don't want to compile them on your own.

okay I figured out my mistake with the space. itr still failed.
I also logged in as root, then did the init and also failed.

I have nVidia 6200 I believe. but not 100% sure one that. and the driver pkg I am trying to install is named NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9755-pkg1.run This pgk is stated as the latest in the IA32 family.

When I try to install the driver by running the package it tells me I have no precompiled kernel interface and asks if I want to download it from nVidia. which I do.

Then when it runs itself after that ir says I have no cc and I need to install gcc or set a path to cc.

I am really not very knowledgable in linux but I guess since my windows harddrive just took a dump on me and I have no window CD I am going to have to learn.

If I knew what this precompiled kernel interface or the package name for it is that it wants me to have I would try and install it from the fedora packages.

I know gcc is installed because it show int he dmesg (shown in a previous post)

I am not sure how to find my exact dist. I just can say it is fedora 6 and downloaded maybe 60 days ago. I will try and find the commad to tell me more accurately so I can post here

the nVidia install log follows:

[root@localhost log]# more nvidia-installer.log

I have made some progress

I learned how to ad the path then I for a msg saying I needed to install libc, so I installed all the dev pkgs and libraries. Then I get a msg that it can not find my kernel source. The source rpm's are installed but I can not make much sence of what it is telling how to set it. I also am not finding any help for how to set the kernel path on the web

----
[root@localhost ~]# tail /var/log/nvidia-installer.log
Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your
kernel and that they are properly configured; on Red Hat Linux systems,
for example, be sure you have the 'kernel-source' or 'kernel-devel' RPM
installed. If you know the correct kernel source files are installed,
you may specify the kernel source path with the '--kernel-source-path'
command line option.
-----

I assume it means the export command so I will man that and hopefully make some sence of it.

they all come with alot of nvidia drivers, but they are generic x drivers and usually donot support the 3d featureset

oh and grats, the fisrt time you have to deal with it is the wost experiance ever, but you learn alot about linux so its all good in the end
