It's probably not a good thing to try running SL with root permissions, but that shouldn't cause such an error. Was there more than just that line as that one always comes up, it's a function comment saying that it is incomplete at this time, but still works for the most part.

No, there was a lot more than that. I was installing it for the first time and wanted to make sure I could install it correctly. Nvidia has a bug that affects my ability to install its latest driver that will enable me, hopefully, to play SL on Linux. I just wondered if that message was part of the Nvidia bug. Thanks for responding.

Ah, the most recent driver is not needed to run SL. Though if you want you can always post the last ten or 15 lines from the terminal used to start SL, that usually has the error message.

The normal problems are that nvidia_glx is not installed or there is a 32bit frame buffer problem. If glx is not installed properly then SL gets forced to use mesaGL, you won't want any messages pertaining to mesa in the startup spam.

I didn't know what was important, so here is the whole install error message.

Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". means you need to install nvidia_glx which should also make the 32 bit frame buffer error go away as well. Mind you this is a should.

ok, I'm going to try to install an older version of the IA-32 Nvidia driver and see if I can install it. The 8762 one, which is the latest, I only get a command prompt and no gui.

I'm running Ubuntu AMD64 dual core as well, even with SLi under nVidia 7900's, it can be done. Though it might depend on how it is forcing you to install the nvidia driver and glx modules. You will need to edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf to reference the new 'nvidia' driver. Reboot and X should start up had the driver installed properly. I found the ubuntu packages (if you are an ubuntu user) install the driver more easily than doing it by hand.

A few hours ago I tried a slightly older IA-32 driver and it too failed to produce a GUI. I went in and by hand edited the xorg.conf file. Did no good. I have spent almost 24 hours trying to get my hardware and Mandriva and Nvidia to play well, and unless someone wants to spend time walking me through this, step by baby step, I'm done for now. When the Nvidia setup program finishes and tells me it is successful and updates my xorg.conf file automatically with their utility, and I still get no gui, someone is very wrong. Thanks for all your blood sweat and tears folks, it is appreciated, I'm just very frustrated.

A friend had absolutely no luck with the official nVidia driver package, but had instant success with their distribution's own re-packaging of the nVidia driver, pulled from online. I can't tell you exactly what to type to get a live-install of a package for your distro -- I don't have Mandriva -- but maybe that's a good direction for investigation.

I would be happy to try to help.. Could you post your xorg.conf file here? Also say how you installed the nvidia driver, and whether you got any error messages?

Thanks ! I'm back to carefully matching up my kernel with the kernel source. As soon as I do that again, I'll try to reinstall and then post the xorg.conf.

All looks OK to me.. What happens when you start X? No output?

You could try disabling the DPMS option..

Probably need accelerated gfx drivers installed. What card are you using, and what drivers?

When I start X, all I get is command line and I'm a newb to that. I get no gui at all. I'll try disabling DPMS.

It says load DPMS but I specifically put "null" in that space.

OK.. The mistake is in the xorg.conf file.

The lines that say:

Virtual 800 600

Should be changed to

Modes "800x600"

I think this could be a NVidia specific config thing..

Also, Unless you have a very bad monitor, I would suggest 1024x768 at the very leasr instead of 800x600.. but in the end it's your decision!

omg I thought I'd never get SL to work. That simple little thing you saw solved it all. Thank you so much. Now the Nvidia drivers are installed right and SL runs the way it should. It looks ok so far but no sound :/

Sound is not working yet.. but if you want to enable streaming music, you can use my script (slstream.py):

http://stux.wikiinfo.org/moin.py/Tools

You have to run it from a x-terminal as root, but it works pretty well, and only uses root perms to access the stream (not to run the music player)..

To get it to run, you also need to install pcapy which may be part of your distro, or alternatively can be downloaded from here:

http://oss.coresecurity.com/projects/pcapy.html

Please note the requirements on this page (you need python and libpcap-dev to install pcapy).
