arrg ... best would be to convince vivox to provide their service for linux users via a mumble/murmur interface, everybody would be happy. Even those who don't want to use voice, because they could actively decide not to use it. But we (SL linux users) are just a minority of 1 million SL residents (rough estimation by looking on the proportion of the number of posts in technical talk forums, taking into account that the linux client testers forum has 1.7 posts per thread more than the general technical issues forum at a statistically significant level. Assuming starting a thread is rather a trait of personality than a function of using a specific operating system. Absolute number of SL-vivox users taken fromhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vivox .).

Personally I mostly use a USB Plantronics DSP400 on recommendation of a friend - it's worked on the four systems I've ever plugged it into. (YMMV, this is not an endorsement, etc etc.)
Beware - the design of the USB Plantronics DSP400 has changed. My one is the old-style single-piece USB+headset. The newer design (with exactly the same name) is modular and presumably uses a different chipset because it does not seem compatible with Second Life's Voice support (under either Linux or Win32, apparently).
