Here it is:
And to the previous poster: it is not only a Linux problem (I have it under Windows, too),

Good to know, indeed, so we can reduce it from this:

From: someone
it may be an ISP problem,

Negative, we all have VERY different access technologies and ISPs.
From: someone
an overloaded TCP stack,

Negative: the TCP stack on Windows / Linux and MacOS (Unix derivate, remember that) differ from each other in ways of implementation.
From: someone
a browser or indeed a modem problem that sets it off.

Negative, since, as the ISPs deliver different brands and models, it would occur on a too large range of modems.
From: someone
The painful part is, that SL does not connect again, have a reconnect option, or in fact, that SL disconnects at all :( Browsers also lose connection, as do other applications like my "Internet Drive"; but when I need more data, they reconnect - the client rebuilds the connection to the server.

The "automatic reconnection" of the connection itself was not observed by me, it is simply inactive and does not come up again under Linux (Ubuntu, as stated above).

I am further into this. But I suspect the source code / network code inside of SL had a change, mixing it up. Hardly any other of the stated reasons apply, since ISPs, hardware, OSes differ too much.

Do you have an NVIDIA Card?

Greets, Xe

SL does not, and PARTICULARLY in SL, that really kills the experience. :([/QUOTE]

Hi Xe,

Yes, I have an NVidia card, as in my sig.

I have seen this happening with another online world, a game called Perfect World. There is is completely random, but does not regularly happen after a teleport, as it does in SL.

So it is not just SL doing that, it happens elsewhere too.

I am beginning to believe it IS a connection issue, on the modem / provider / internet router level, and to something in SL itself; hoever, since the Cool Viewer version has reduced this problem a lot, it does seem to be viewere related, or viewer provoked.

I hope we find something!

not that the probable cause. I rather think that another effect explains it, somehow.

Shipped with Ubuntu comes the NVIDIA driver V 169.12.1.20 and 1.21 SL do NOT work properly with it, and the Coolviewer for V1.20 and V1.21 crash, as well 1.19 Coolviewer > V 3 crashes.

Updating via ENVY (driver installer) to NVIDIA driver 173.14.12 fixes quite some crashes, Coolviewer a bit more, but occassionately it still crashes.

So we have the following information... systems with NVIDIA cards, no matter which OS, seem to get a CPU overload and crash then, locking up the network connection and (under Win) gets it reset or (under Linux) gets it locked, needing it to be reset. Complete lock because of other applications loose their connections as well, no matter which kind they use.

Obviously, Linden has changed either the networking code to something less reliable OR the NVIDIA drivers are not that stable as they should be. I will investigate further into the NVIDIA driver issue, reviewing the changelogs of their Linux drivers AFAP, maybe someone could get into the network issue via a scanner like wireshark or something.

I will try the Envy drivers, as now this has gone from an annoyance that can be worked around by using 1.19.1.4 viewer to A COMPLETE SHOWSTOPPER THANKS TO LINDEN LAB'S FORCED UPDATE!!!

That's right, Viewer 1.19.1.4 is no longer allowed to connect to the grid, therefore anyone with nVidia cards and running Linux just pretty much got told to go pack sand!

I am VERY unhappy with this! I can no longer play SL now!

I have the very latest NVidia drivers, but the last drivers that were clean for me, in all online worlds and so on, were the 90 something drivers. All the 100 something drivers have one issue or another.

Since I am not running the latest greatest graphics hardware, I think I should revert to the drivers of the 90 something series, and try again.

This is a good tip, it would NEVER have occurred to me! :o

Pleased to help. Would you then report if the 90er drivers worked? Envy can install:
173.14.12
96.43.05
71.86.04

So if you could try out the 90er (especially 96.43.05) EVERYONE could fix it with EnvyNG, from the Ubuntu repositories in a whiff.

Plus, Ubuntu 8.10 is on its way, so we might see here very soon again. :)

Are there more people having NVIDIA cards and those network lockups (Windows or Linux, does not matter), or do we have that issue with ATI cards as well? Someone?

Okay, I switched to the Envy drivers found in the Ubuntu repository, and downloaded the v1.21 CoolView viewer. So far, with three long sessions played, I've encountered no problems. I get an occasional brief freeze, but no different from when I was using 1.19.1.4 - and this time it's not taking my system or my network with it. Soooo... I think this definitely confirms it's an nVidia problem; specifically, how SL interacts with it, as no other program I have for either Linux or Windows causes that kind of issue.

I can try a 90-Series NVidia driver, I am not sure which one I have. I am on Suse 10 on this machine.

I tried that on Windows, by the way, with a 94. something driver, but no change.

Setting my network speed to 300 meands I get disconnected a bit later - giving the impression that All Is Well :p , but it is just a delay until my client discovers that I have TP'd

I will do a proper test in the next few days, but today may be out, as was yesterday. RL needs me to Shop till I Drop today.

Curious that the ONLY successful handlings I have seen here involve chucking out the LL Viewer and installing the Cool Viewer... That's a bit like saying the workaround for Windows is Linux  :D

You mean it isn't??? :p

For me, installing the Cool Viewer helped, but not much. It only made the instances of lockups/disconnects a little less frequent. Installing the Envy drivers for my nVidia completely cured my problem. I'm wondering if I would continue to have no problems if I tried running the official SL viewer again...

There is one thing I've noticed, however, since going the Envy route: The "Bump Maps and Shiny" setting in my viewer graphics preferences no longer has any effect - nothing is shiny anymore. I don't know if this is caused by the Envy drivers, or by my using the v1.21.2.x RC viewer (with Cool Viewer replacements). Any insight into this?

K, it is worth then to follow this path. The drivers for the NVIDIA cards, 9x series, are nearly the same for Windows and Linux. We need a broader base, and if it is the driver, I think it is a fix we can submit to NVIDIA AND LL.

I will downgrade my driver then and see if it is affecting the lockups as well.

Thanks alot, Xe

Indeed, I have been running SL for more then a year using a ATI Radeon X1300. Since this last update non of the available vieuwers will let me be logged in for more then 2 minutes before everything freezes...even my CPU (need to manual reset it) if I don't abort fast enough.

I tried 4 different viewers. And reinstalled a variety of recent x1300 drivers -including the latest of cause- that worked well for anything BUT SL.

In the 2 minutes I do have, to fly and chat and do everything, it's clear it should be able to just run normally.

I posted my(?) problem in few other threads but now glad I found this one. ^_^

Ok, starting test on 177.80, original NVIDIA driver.

I also will try out if the APGART setting might change something, but with that, I am not sure if that helps Windows users.

Greetings, Xe

177.80 installed, 1.21.5 RC not working, Coolviewer makes SL more reliable, but not stable as well.

I forgot to follow up on this. It seems updating to 1.21.5 (with Cool Viewer replacements) brought back the bump maps and shiny, so I am a happy camper again!

I should also mention that 1.21.5.x is proving to be very stable, and even faster than the legacy viewers! It's worth giving it a try!

Loosing connection issue resolved
10-14-2008 09:58
Hi all.

I had this problem (some minutes after i ran sl, my wireless connection dead and i did must reboot my machine), but i'v resolved it with EnvyNG and 173.14.12 NVidia driver.

My computer is a Dell Vostro 1400, with a NVidia 8400M and Ubuntu 8.04. SL client is 1_20_17_98669.

Just i had installed EnvyNG ( aptitude install envyng-gtk ) and i'v permited it to configure automagically my graphical card. It selected 173 driver.

I hope this help somebody.

I had that driver as well, using EnvyNG w/ 173.14.12 Driver, so that seems not to be the problem at all. BUT I looked up which client I had and it is SecondLife_i686_1_20_15_92456..

Will try out 1_20_17_98669 tonight and see if the problem has been fixed, maybe. Result to be postet here.
