I've been toying with the idea of making a SL bootable Linux CD, I don't really need it myself, but it would be kinda cool to be able to hand them out.

If there is enough interest I'll probably go forward with it.

Usually a bootable cd only runs with a generic version of graphics drivers and wont be able to run any 3d apps.
As for a cd for running the SL client, it's updated so often you will need to be on it full time to keep it up to date.
Maybe just a stable version might be better and updated less often.
I dunno really, but nice thoughts.

There has been a knoppic version for SL done by Drake Bakon.

It is not up to date but it shows it is possible.

Yes Normally they have generic, but this isn't a normal situation, Also who said it had to run on a cd, it could run from a usb key for instance.

I don't actually have a need for it, I just thought it might be fun to make one.

Cool, I could use this as a basis for doing an updated version.

The older CD is only NVidia specific, and built on Knoppix. I'm working on an update using Gentoo as the base, and supporting both NVidia and ATI.

Some more details are on Page 20 of the Metaverse Messenger for August 22nd, 2006.

i915 video

I have an HP nc6400 with intel video chipset. I tried knoppix, and no dice. However, I tried Ubuntu Edgy and the app started up while in the dock at work. At home, I couldn't even get ubuntu to come up in X. Turns out I need a package called 915resolution. The system can see my 1024x768 lcd (2nd) display, and the video reports it can do that, then the X will start. I built a persistent USB key install, and now have X running nicely, but it still tells SL it can't do the GL stuff.

2007-03-08T05:29:14Z INFO: createContext: creating window 800x600x32

2007-03-08T05:29:14Z WARNING: createContext: window creation failure. SDL: Couldn't find matching GLX visual
2007-03-08T05:29:14Z INFO: destroyContext begins

Going to bed, I'll look at this more later.

Maybe I'll erase the USB key, and limit what I allow it to update to just the 915resolution.

you need to install the latest drivers from who ever made your graphics card and follow the requirements it needs for them
