No news yet, but we *are* paying attention!

There is no new 1.9.0 Linux alpha client yet. I promised to post an update at the end of the week. That time is now, so here goes:

Don is working on a build of 1.9.0. Some libraries changed and so it's taking longer than he'd hoped. That, coupled with the fact that he is working on another more complex project that was previously scheduled, means an additional delay.

We *are* paying attention, but there is a limit to how quickly we can get this new build together. Again, I will post next week when I have additional news.

For now, I thank you for your patience while we work the kinks out of the alpha release.

Thanks!

The What's your distro has 206 votes, that means at least that much people (who are present on the forums) are waiting for the new release/using Linux. Some of them can use Windows, too, of course. I'm not sure the usual 'only 5% of ppl use the forums' logic can be applied here, though, given the special status of the Linux client.

But still, we're much waiting for a Linux alpha, and then sometimes in the next 100 years, hopefully a beta version, too.

Thanks for the news update, Karen! We'll be squirming in our seats, but we will wait :D

Hehe the excitement is fabulous. I don't use Linux--maybe I will have a need to someday--but today, it's attitudes like this that makes me curious. Thanx for helping in Technical Issues too, Zi. :)

If there is anything else I can help forward on to the right Lindens, just lemme know.

Thank you, Torley! I guess we Linux enthusiasts have been left out on many things too often, that made us a little bitter and cynical. I hope I wasn't too much of a hassle :) I'll try to make up for it by helping out more people ;)

*hugs*

its true, one linux specific developer on the LL team would go a long, long way. Linux people are great, its not something to be overlooked, i love the community.

i dont mind waiting for the new version. -- its still alpha, and i'd expect there to be problems that causes the release to be slower / delayed. However it might be in LL's intrest to streamline these releases, as the pay back would be great.

If anyone on the Linden Labs team wants assistance with Linux itself, I'm sure a few of us (including myself) will be willing to help out.

If you want to try it out w/o blowing up Windows, take a look at Knoppix or Ubuntu's Kubuntu Live CD. They boot and run from the CD, and don't touch the HD.

Heh, Zi. I have seen you in Luskwood lately -- are you back to running on WINE?

I do wonder when this build is going to be considered day-and-date for the Mac and PC builds; hopefully soon.

I do like the idea of SL being OS-agnostic, and besides, I wanna get it up on my K6 again. :P

Yes, Michi, for now I'm using cedega (wine). Works okay, but it's just not the same :D And it has the old alpha bug which makes it bad for clothes.
