I've been trying to get SL up and running on my laptop since i got it a few days ago, with no luck. It always dies with a "window creation error" in X. In the console i get "libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x5b" and "WARNING: createContext: window creation failure. SDL: Couldn't find matching GLX visual." I'm curious if anyone is running the current version with a i945 chipset, because i don't want to hunt for an answer anymore if it's just impossible. This thread at first says it's impossible with intel, but he eventually works it out. This one gave me some gl_blacklist stuff to try, no luck. Glx-gears, beryl, and ppracer(tuxracer) all give me the same "claims to not support visual" error... but they all run. I've done some searching and the error seems to be just some generic error kicked out in lots of situations on lots of cards... and most the time it's inconsequential. I've tried starting the danged thing at different depths and resolutions with no luck. And no... I don't run beryl while I try to run the game. I put more info at the bottom of the post, if anyone has any good ideas... but i've sure run out. Thanks everyone, (or anyone =)), Boadi --- Relevant Second Life error: 2007-02-17T14:59:22Z INFO: Initializing window... 2007-02-17T14:59:22Z INFO: createContext, fullscreen=0 size=800x600 2007-02-17T14:59:22Z INFO: Compiled against SDL 1.2.5 2007-02-17T14:59:22Z INFO: Running against SDL 1.2.10 2007-02-17T14:59:22Z INFO: createContext: creating window 800x600x32 libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x5b 2007-02-17T14:59:22Z WARNING: createContext: window creation failure. *bump* Asked more simply: is anyone running this game with an intel chipset?
I really prefer not to reinstall windows just to see if it's a linux-only (or boadi-only) issue... please don't make me do it. =(

I'm trying to install SL on a Dell Inspiron 6400 with same Kubuntu as you (6.10)
I'll update you on my progress, if I have any luck.

I usually run SL on my other PC, which runs WinXP, but I occasionally run SL on my laptop, which runs Fedora Core 5. The client works fine, alll I did was unpack the downloaded file, change to the directory, and ./secondlife Haven't tried the First Look Viewer, though.
My laptop is using integrated graphics, same i810 driver. So it should run fine... have you tried with other distributions of Linux?

Some time ago I had it running on my intel based laptop, but I didn't try it for some time. But I can try it tonight and update this post later.

Pn my Acer Travelmate with Intel i915 chipset SL runs out of the box. It's advisable to turn off the j OpenGL extension to avoid a flickering display as stated in: /263/f7/157412/1.htmlGood luck!

I run Fedora6 on a Dell Optiplex with also an Intel Chipset and I believe I've pretty the same problem.
SL boots correctly until I get the client window with the message "Your character is loading" and then suddenly the screen gets black. The strange thing is that I can still see the mouse pointer... but can't do more, and have to reset the PC to reboot it again.
Some ideas? Thanks

I'm running a similar system to you.
I have Beryl up and running great and I think that may be have the problem (DRI, pixmaps etc).
The linux client ran after a fashion before I got Beryl working but was never really satisfactory with minor display glitches.
The solution? Reboot into Windoze... after all, the company paid for a license lol.
Sorry to give up but I console myself that at work I have a fully featured OS development system that works far better than anything M$ could produce.
IM me if you need any more info
Sandy
