There will be a Euro Zone meeting at 12:00 and a US meeting 6 hours later hosted by Drake Bacon. UPDATE: This meeting has moved to Wednesday the 31st.The next meeting of the SL LUG will take place on Saturday 31st May, 12pm SLT (8pm GMT, 9pm CET) at Maryport (182,150) (Find -> Events -> check upcoming -> search for 'Linux'). Bring a bottle...well, after the update to 1.9.10 was dropped at the last minute it looks like this Wednesday will see a roll out of the new client. A new Linux client might be on the table, it might not, so far there has been no word from LL but the feeling seems to be that we are to be left high and dry. In any event the meeting will be about the exciting new features, even if we all have to bring a bottle.....

I don't think it's so bad, that we won't have a client at all... It may just be dead slow, like the MAC Version of 1.10 was until they postponed the rollout... (OK, technically that was 1.9.1 ) The fact that the Linux Alpha Client is now on the normal download page makes me feel it is completely integrated (as an alpha) in the normal release process. Politically GREAT progress And I DO have a bottle handy 1.10 on preview works fine with Linux, ignoring the alpha bug of course. You just have to run setup each time you want to run Preview under wine...

Wine is woefully unstable for me, its works ok, then it just goes away *poof* - if i have to run the windows client, i have to reboot to do it :/
Going to be bit of a joke of the only LUG members who can turn up and stay logged for the duration of are the ones not running Linux!

I would suggest that we discuss a protest action, if it is true (as rumoured) that we are NOT getting a current Linux Alpha Version of the client for the forseeable future... A LOT of people have bust a gut to get the Alpha Client in wide usage, and a LOT of people only came to Second Life because of it; wine is OK but a very poor second. Sorry, all the wine/cedega fans, but I do feel this to be true. It would also be embarrassing to LL if this IS the case - we have had "promises" (or was it simply loose talk?) from a Linden (would you believe Karen?) that the Linux Alpha is integrated into the main release stream. I still hope that the promises of LL hold true - a Linux Alpha Client WILL be delivered either on time, or shortly after :: sigh :: --- edit --- Correction: it was Don: /263/91/87573/1.html#post889209--- end edit ---

This MAY help us with a Group Logo! Anyone have a Tombstone + Pinguin jpeg? Might work as a temporary Group Insignia, too. Or a penguin ghost? To represent our "virtual" status?

From: Angel Sunset A LOT of people have bust a gut to get the Alpha Client in wide usage, and a LOT of people only came to Second Life because of it; wine is OK but a very poor second. Sorry, all the wine/cedega fans, but I do feel this to be true.
But Angel pleaser read the firt red line of the download page: "THIS IS ALPHA SOFTWARE, RUN AT YOUR OWN RISK! " and also "This is an early version of the Linux client, made for testing purposes only." So i think it is really unfair against Linden Labs to blame them because they made the status of the Alpha client very clear. I feel this is hurting the community interest of Linux Client users if you and others are going after them because of some days of delay. If you look at Ubuntu - they delay new versions of their OS for months - users are unhappy but normally this is accepted. If users want a stable, supported client/viewer they must use Windows and not Mac or Linux! I think Linden Labs does what they can do in relation to their priorities. Don't talk about promises if you link to something what Don said: "Once Icculus or I get around to making the tarballs automated, we'll probably make sure building a linux client is just a normal part of pushing out patches." he says "probably". We will not have a stable version guaranteed as long as LL considers Mac and Linux clients/viewers as unstable/alpha! Vinci

Hi Vinci. You are right, and we DO run at our own risk, and at first, that risk was high - no-one knew if they would lose inventory or damage their clothing (alpha bug) or something, and ran it anyway, and still do... That is not the issue; this statement by Don is: " The linux client code has been integrated into the main codebase Compiling a new binary is a simple process, however we don't have an internal packaging tool yet (I've been making the tarballs semi-manually)." I do not expect an instant client. However, the statement that Eddy Stryker made: /263/a3/108415/1.html#post1051886/263/a3/108415/1.html#post1051886 gives the impression that we have been dropped without notice. I think it would be a simple courtesy if Linden Labs would keep us in touch on this, especially since the Linux User Community has been helping itself and LL with a LOT of energy and talent. I am ALSO prepared to wait a bit for the new client; however, I also put a lot of faith in Don's statement that it is a) integrated into the main Codebase, and b) Compiling a new binary is a simple process. Last time, there WERE issues with the libraries, and LL was very courteous in that they let us know. We were all sad, but quite prepared to wait. I think in this case, we would really appreciate the same treatment. This MAY be all premature; how trustworthy IS the statement that Eddy Stryker made? It is really NOT an official LL statement

From: Angel Sunset This MAY be all premature; how trustwirthy IS the statement that Eddy Stryker made? It is really NOT an official LL statement But there is no disputing the fact we haven't seen or heard anything from a Linden on the Linux client for quite a while now....

I remember the last update, when they said "the client has been compiled, yet not tested" and we offered to test it ourselves instead. They said, "sure, why not" and offered the tarball. That was a great positive feedback, surprised and thrilled me to no end I really hope for a surprise like that to happen again
