I'll be honest, I don't really know how to update the kernel...

Hmm.. seems most unlikely as a fix, but I suppose it might be worth upgrading your kernels.. At this point, given that no one besides me and Kelseigh seem to have this issue, and I don't think anyone else using Ubuntu 6.06 seems to be experiencing this bug, I'm going to chalk this up to some subtle breakage somewhere because of tweaking I might've done some time in the last few years on this install. I'm going to do a fresh install of the system here in the next few weeks. In the meantime, I've edited the secondlife script to copy over the needed file now, so the bug is no longer an issue for me... it's just an annoyance that it's still there in theory and might grab other people. I hate to leave an interesting problem like this behind without solving it, but our toolset is limited without source access I suppose. Bones: did you try disabling AGP in xorg.conf? Yes indeed. See my results in post 28 of this thread. In summary, no dice. ![]() |

Ugh..I don't really *want* to have to re-install, not after all this trouble. It's a PitA to backup everything once again, and go through that whole process. I mean, if I have to, but it's not something I'd look forward to.
Funny, Bones and I are using totally different distros (I'm on OpenSuSe), and yet our problems are eerily similar. |

I mean, if I have to, but it's not something I'd look forward to. *nods* I was an utter Linux newbie back in late '04, but I took someone's advice and put /home on a different partition than the rest of the install. It's that choice that'll make doing a fresh system install far far simpler than it's ever been on any other computer I've been on. Most of my settings/themes/etc. should be there and working flawlessly on my first boot after install. Even SL will bbe here, so I can see if the bug is fixed immediately! Funny, Bones and I are using totally different distros (I'm on OpenSuSe), and yet our problems are eerily similar. That's been a source of some fascination for me too. And frustration, because it only seems to hit you and me. And various other f-words. ![]() I'm going to e taking a hiatus from SL very soon though. |

Ubuntu 6.06 (especially AMD64) has random lockup technology. It has something to do with libraries for rendering, so SL will trigger it a lot. I was updating for Xgl and compiz testing and the nasty crashy library hit the road, however I updated a lot of things so I don't know that I can say what one it was. Perhaps it was a mesa library. Also my upgrades were done through apt-get on the command line so no history was made. BUT, it stopped being an issue when I was getting files from xgl.compiz.info and www.beerorkid.com/compiz, should have done my upgrade through synaptic so I would have a history. Sorry folks.
--Edit1-- Aside from that bug there appears to be a kernel side bug for AMD64 that will cause lockups. |
