first you need the ATI Driver for your kernel installed, and you need to use that OpenGL rather then mesa, if you already have the driver installed for your card I'd just google "ATI and Mesa" you'll most likely find out how to use ATI instead of mesa... i hate mesa ha, it's definately the problem tho.

If you have a somewhat, not so new ATi graphic card, the default ATi drivers that come with xorg should support 3d acceleration just fine by it self (Easiest way to see if it's the case, check if DRI is enabled with your default install).

The proprietary drivers are generally only particulary needed if you have a newer card which xorg's default ATi drivers don't support doing hardware acceleration with, out of the box.

When I run FGLRXINFO...Mine says mesa

but in with Fedora 4, installed ATI Drivers (8.23.7)...still says Mesa..but from Gnome, I installed SL and run it and it works great..I played with Xorg.conf for a while before trying, trying to get fglrxinfo to say ATI, but gave up and just ran it and it worked :)

Happy to play SL in Linux now, adds a bit more then the stable windows version.. :)
