From: Charly Muggins By the way, Ladies of THE Thread, sorry not to be able to provide more amusement in the last couple of hours, but I had to attend a lecture on remedial education. /plus ca change . . . For clarification, I was learning how to do it better, not having it done to me. /apparently I may have been a little harsh on our history student here

From: Charly Muggins You subscribe to the John Wayne (or is it Tom Hanks now?) history books?
/your posts are doing more to prove my claims than anything I could say No, I do subscribe to the view that it was the USA who kept the Red Army out of Western Europe for way too many years and at way too high a cost. Thanks for the gratitude.

From: Charly Muggins We were a lot happier when the US practised the Monroe Doctrine.
/No, that wasn't some game JFK played with Marilyn . . . Most Americans were too, but someone had to come in and clean up all your messes.

From: Briana Dawson OH what i am thinking.
You were not being bombed into oblivion by Germany.
My bad.
I'll put up the John Wayne History as soon as you put that bogus "attacking defenseless countries and bombing civilians tripe you are shelling out". Now Bri, we know the Euros NEVER bombed civilians............I mean let Mr. Churchill tell us about it. "I do not understand this squeamishness about the use of gas. We have definitely adopted the position at the Peace Conference of arguing in favour of the retention of gas as a permanent method of warfare. It is sheer affectation to lacerate a man with the poisonous fragment of a bursting shell and to boggle at making his eyes water by means of lachrymatory gas. I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilised tribes. The moral effect should be so good that the loss of life should be reduced to a minimum. It is not necessary to use only the most deadly gases: gases can be used which cause great inconvenience and would spread a lively terror and yet would leave no serious permanent effects on most of those affected... We cannot, in any circumstances acquiesce to the non-utilisation of any weapons which are available to procure a speedy termination of the disorder which prevails on the frontier." - Good ol' Winnie, the symbol of the United Kingdom. And of course we won't bring up the firebombings of German civilians. Sweep that under the rug. Must just be a myth, we both know the Euros are too civilized to burn hundred of thousands of civilians to death. I know the Queen's army never gave a taste O' the grape to Indian, Sudanese, or Egyptian villiages. That would be uncivilized.

Luckily the dems didn't get a super majority :3 Whatever "change" they make won't be permanent at least. I doubt Obama will make a mess of our already questionable foreign policy because he's supposedly reaching across the aisle for experienced advisers (whatever it takes) not to screw up there. So, Israel, there's a glimmer of hope for you, too. And as for economics, he's supposedly getting a lot of help there. Let's just hope he heeds good advice and doesn't do anything too drastic while our economy is shaky.
As a Bush supporter, I've had to deal with a lot of ridicule from the enlightened left, so my advice to those who don't support Obama is to not stoop to their level (disrespecting the president with birthday cards comparing him to a monkey [that will be racist now ;3] and saying hateful things). That doesn't mean you can't be critical of his policy, but just be civil. And Obama isn't going to be completely responsible for what happens, remember your representatives and his advisers (of whom many may share your feelings) and put yourself in his shoes.
For the record, I didn't vote for him, but Americans need to seriously stop bashing their own country and officials that took a popular vote to get them in.

Not wishing to be critical Katt, but you seem to have redefined this sub-forum's purpose on a very literal interpretation of its title from what has historically been a place for sl participants to arrange rl meetings and events, to a forum where current affairs can be discussed. Is this your intention? /I'd be more than happy for the thread to be closed . . .

*lock* dammit *lock*!!!!! It never works when I do it! Katt, please make a "politics" forum if LL is going to welcome this sort of thread. And then upgrade the forum software with something that will let me mute subforums so they don't show up when I do "New Posts"

I'm in a Blue state.
I'm thrilled to live in a democracy, and to see the country get so involved with this election.
Sorry if a "political" thread is bugging some of you.
I'm guessing the thread is about done though.
Best, -- Katt
