I am very new to this game, and your classes sound like an exellent way to learn! I would really appriciate it if you could post the correct locations to the two classes! Thanks!

This is currently on display at Learn Island, a private island opened to the public who are interested in checking out what other people are doing education wise.

Iron - as we have discussed I love your work and think it has terrific potential. Last I spoke with you, you mentioned that you had changed over servers and needed to set up a different "account" for those of us who are testing and using your course creation system.

I know that you are busy, but do you have any timeframe on when we might regain access to the new "class creation" intrerface site? Keep up the great work!

Classes / griefers / harassers
12-02-2005 17:19
This is a very interesting contribution, Iron, which might some day make it into a safe haven for education in which a griefer cannot put an end to the entire class by setting off a weapon and forcing every person there to relog.

I would love to see a day when students of mine could come in world to be taught RL subjects. As long as said students could be disrupted by griefers or sexually harassed by people who think of SL as being 'a game,' it isn't going to happen, though. Or not from my end. I am not willing to have my RL students treated the way I have been by certain members of quite organized grief groups. This is too bad too since my college does at least 50% of all of its teaching through distance education.

Well, I doubt certification will ever be compulsory. And it's not my intention at all to make it compulsory.

Really, the idea is that if you're going to get a scripter to do something for you, it might be nice to know that they have gone through the full gamut of technologies that are available.

Also, in order to combat lag, it might be good to know that all scripters in a particular area are up on their anti-lag technologies.

I think of it as just an attempt to add another piece to the puzzle. The worst that comes out of this is that no one uses certification and we all have a lot of cool class material to use to teach in world.

If you get an island and make it invisible on the map (which apparently, Learn Island is) you can control who will come to your island and who can not.

Fist, thanks for the implied questions about how to maintain privacy in classes. I am collecting FAQ for CSL (thread in this subforum) and will include this question. I picked up a similar questions from deb Sartre and posted an answer in the FAQ thread. I understand deb Sartre has now started a class. You may want to contact her to see if she is still satisfied with the privacy. (You can find her through her posting in the FAQ thread.)

Second, thanks for illuminating an issue for the EDMO project. We are seeking to develop demos to encourage educators to develop courses is SL. One of the likely themes is obstacles. The privacy issue is apparently one of these.

Is Learn Island still around? Could not find it in a search.
