I came into Second Life in September 2005 and landed like most I guess in the instruction path that leads to the welcome area. I picked up a few pointers on the path. At the welcome area I was greeted by a couple great people who introduced themselves and really helped me a bunch. During the next two to three months I explored SL as much as I could and in my travels did a lot of landmarking, picked up every free item I ran across and had an inventory that was unbelievable. After the first 90 days I purchased my preimum membership and applied to be a SL Mentor and was accepted. I did a complete review of my entire inventory and set up a series of folders that I devoted just for new residents of Second Life. In these folders I have loads of landmarks. Not the usual shopping malls and stores but the fantastic builds that people have made, I have the wonderful gardens, romantic places, loads of freebie landmarks, and just some quiet, peaceful places to wander around it. I have folders set up for clothes (both male and female), jewelery, vehicles, and houses, etc...that I think may be useful for the new arrivals.
I spend a lot of time in the welcome areas and on Help Island. I try and at least say hello of every new resident I can find...usually not near the fountain where most the older residents hang out but in and around the spokes leading from there.
I go to the sandboxes and other areas where most the newbies go. I let me them know that I would like to help if needed, and offer them the things I have set up in the newbie folders I have.
I present them my note card and offer to assist them anytime they need help.
Those who ask me to make them friend I do. I try to follow up on them later on to see if they still need any assistance.
I have made a ton of good friends this way......It is my way of paying back those who helped me when I first got on.
I don't force myself or my things on anyone....I let them know who I am, why I want to help and what I have to offer and if they want I give them what I have.

From: Abrah Sullivan I picked up a police uniform and joined some police group to get the title Police Officer, and every day I visit the welcoming area.
Why? Because we're all brought up to trust the police and if you have problems, you can go to them. So if I were new and I wanted to ask for help, I'd goto a police officer in game 500 times before I went to one of those bling covered ghetto queens 1 time.
what was the cop organization (i wander if it was mine i don't think we had the title "police officer"...lol)? i have started a few "police" organizations when i first started about a 2 months ago or so on an alt of mine. The group was for actually stopping griefers in the sandboxes (by reporting and other non - violent acts) like cordova and gorguen. i never thought about the welcome area and what it has to offer and what it doesn't. thx for the story as it has opened my eyes and i may send a few of my men and wemon down there to help . We would always like to have another member or officer, if you would like to join just IM Tre Giles.

From: Abrah Sullivan but 95% versus 5%. Come on now Gabe Those 95% of people NEED the help. They don't know what they need, so how can you expect them to choose the correct teleporter? OMFG if i didn't goto help island i would never be here and never play SL. It is a very scary thought, this game is really cool and i don't really wanna miss it! I went through help island and did everything...... not really understanding anything..... skipped the ball..... as it was too hard.....lol I was about to leave and never return to SL cause i thought everything was too hard when i saw someone with this awsome av with dark wings. Her name was Moon Adamant, BEST MENTOR EVER, she told me to skip the welcome area and to ignore the people as they were evil ppl who are very intimidating. She told and gave me everything i needed to know to survive, gave me all the freebees (and a copy of wings!!!!!), and folowed me into the real SL. She helped me with all my problems and i wouls never be as rich or as helping as i am today if it wern't for her. SHe is still on my buddys list and we talk on the holidays *we are so busy*. IM her if you need any help cause she has most of the answers. Moon, if you are reading this... thx! for everything! so yes it should be manditory, for everyone.. i was so close to skipping orientation... still a scary thought.
