This is a message to all the new comers out there, since second life has a email option we’ve been getting a lot of younger folk in here using a lot of acronyms such as: Wtf, Lol, Rofl and Such. I must tell you, it is ok to at least use Lol once per day, but, you know, I’m sure you’re not actually laughing at every thing I say. It would make it a lot nicer if you would lay down on them.

My other problem: People messing up you’re with your and such. Here’s a quick lesson on that :

Your: Your mom, Your Car, Your Food… ect .
You’re ( You are ): You’re great, You’re Dumb, you’re cool ..ect..

I’m not trying to be rude, it’s just for SL’s sake of intelligence.

Please, if you can’t at least speak this kind of grammar on the mature grid, please, at least move to the teen grid.

OK, now think about what he said. Go on. Absorb the message. Now consider the grammatical pun. Aaah! You see? :D

Why did you put a capital letter on 'yes'? If you must be pedantic please practice what you preach.

'affect' and 'principal' are not so much misspelled as mixed up with similar words that mean something different.

There is also an unnecessary capitalisation in the word "that". Those who nitpick when it comes to grammar are going to have their posts combed over with a fine-toothed thingy. The original poster really needs to work on capitalisation rules and that, awkward, comma, placement, habit.

Sorry for my not so indulgent capitalizations, but I use capitalizations as my high opinion.

LOL@John Sorry, I really am laughing. I don’t mean to insult or make fun of you. Did you considered what sort of commotion you would start by coming here less than a month old and correcting people?

John, I am almost a year old and still considered a newbie by some. After joining the Greeter/Mentor corps at the tender age of two months, I was told by one old mentor that no one under the age of six months should be allowed to be a mentor. I mention that so you will understand the group mentality of many in Second Life.

When I joined a year ago, there were 60,000 people in Sl and, most were technical in their education and disposition. Now there are over 350,000. Imagine if you have been here for a couple years or more, what sort of change that is to you. There is a fair amount of resentment against the sudden influx of so many new residents, many of whom don’t have credit cards to show proof of age. The face of SL is changing very quickly. Too quickly, I suspect, for some.

Many new residents are from non-English speaking countries. So, to them, English is a second language. Many engineers and computer people speak English as a second language, as far as I am concerned. (I am a 1st grade teacher who is non-technical) Grammar to some of them is optional, unless it is in C+ or some other computer language. Then there are people like me.

I was told that less than five percent of women are dyslexic. I am one of them. I cannot spell phonetically. I do not hear the words right. So my spelling is horrible. I have learned, to my glee, most Slers speak typoieze.

Believe it or not, I laugh a lot in RL. No, I don’t shake and laugh out loud. I chuckle, giggle, smile and on occasion, laugh my butt off. However, in SL, I :) and LOL. So please forgive me for my over indulgence in LOLing. After you have been here a while, (at least six months..no just kidding :-) ) you will learn to read the nuances, along with the shades of amusement and joviality expressed by LOLs.

Anyway, welcome to Second Life. I hope we haven’t chased you away. It really is a fun place. If you need any help look me up.

:-)

Pet peeve:

---> Definately <--- (I have a friend who always misspells it this way and I scream at him everytime).

Then of course the mishandling of there/their/they're

Personally I don't care if it's a 1 day old resident that pointed it out. Grammar and spelling are not SL skills.

Methinks John has no sense of humor nor satire.

On the other hand, Gabe really does write that way* -- I edit all his stuff for the M2.

*Not really. This was also a work of satire.

Then that is sad! That makes you either a fool or a troll.

If you are a fool, I wasted thirty minutes writing an heartfelt response, in hopes it would help you to better enjoy Second Life. Sadly, a fool can’t learn.

If you are a troll, which is what I suspect. Shame on you for coming in here and dragging your ball of your “you know what” through our educational forum. It angers me that I took the time to write to a troll. You should be banned!

If you spell them both as "ur" you don't need to worry about the distinction :)

Lessons?
07-26-2006 09:23
Hello,

I really can only give you compliments on this thread.

And if anyone wants to have more SL lessons on this, grammar,or how to have normal conversations,or how to use the right vocabulary and so on.

I do teach in SL the English language and use my RL material, although I have to translate it from my RL Dutch lesson materials(*smiles) it seems to work fine for my satisfied students.

All depends of style, of formality...yeah we have formality when we chat, some people like to write like that, its part of the internet culture, you may take it or complain as youre doing here but you must understand that is not going to change....

Fuolka, your english isn't actually the best. And I don't really think people who couldn't speak a good amount of english would come onto an english speaking client. So I doubt many people would require lessons.

Slang is becoming apart of life, and more and more people (even older folks) are using slang and "txt" style writing (e.g. ur, brb, lol). It is all over the internet, it is how people talk on chat sites. If you don't like it, then you need to either get out and about in real life, or stop making issues out of nothing x)
