From: Wilhelm Neumann I wanted to help out people on orientation island and the only way to do that was to become a mentor Orientation islands might be phased out in the (near) future so it won't really matter anymore then.

Well, with the mentor channel you're supposed to answer in IM. I've never seen anyone being chastised for asking a question there, but they do get told off for answering in channel. There are other places to get answers as a mentor - Q&A and Mental Mentors have been very helpful for me

I've heard about a redesign of OI (though not much lately, the project seems to have gone on hold), but nothing about dropping OI entirely.

It was Blue's office hour: someone asked what they should do if they saw a problem on an OI and he said that they were testing something that *might* make OIs obsolete so there wouldn't be much point in devoting time to fixing them *if* they might drop them (my paraphrasing from memory). He didn't really elaborate though, and it doesn't mean they'll actually go *poof* if whatever else they're testing doesn't work out.

There are other places to get answers as a mentor - Q&A and Mental Mentors have been very helpful for me well then they had a change of heart but the people I saw asking questions barely got the question out and were told to shut up basicaly and to not spam also has it ever occured that the answer might actualy be useful for other people who have not yet asked the question but might have it in the future? Anyhow for a group of mentors I found it awefully unwelcoming and antisocial. I was glad I didn't have any questions, but to be honest I had answers but was afraid to speak up so by the time I got to the "training" session I was gone cause everyone was so mean. Plus the fact that there are mentors who should not be mentors for various reasons eg: the ones sited around. In any event I found it not a positive experience yet believe it or not when it comes to SL I have a lot of knowledge and am good at explaining things, but I didn't want the other bagguage that come with it so like any bad work environment or volunteer environment I let it die. /shrugs

No, but alledgedly it did occur to them that people who answer questions in the group are better off being demoted back to apprentice or kicked out of the group altogether. *says a little prayer each time she answer in the group* I'm sure I don't have many lives left .

OK, I'm not a mentor but my partner and I belong to a group of folks that enjoys helping people get started off well in SL.
Yesterday, my partner was at one of the more popular mainland "welcome" areas and observed an individual going around pushing other avies around. So, she rezed a box and sat on it to avoid being pushed herself. She then proceeded to inform the individual that she was filing an AR on them.
At that point, that individual identified himself as a mentor, that the was good friends with some Lindens and that he could have her banned. Banned??? For what???
We both checked this individual's profile and, yes, they are a member of Second Life Mentors.
Not only that but their profile also contains some VERY non PG language in it.
So, yeah, what, exactly, does this kind of thing say to new people about the ethics of SL Mentors as a group?
Yes, this is but one individual out of a very large group of some of the nicest people I have ever met in SL. Some of my best friends are mentors.
But all it takes is is one bad apple to spoil the bunch.
My partner filed an AR on this person for making the ban threat against her and I also filed an AR for the language in their profile. I truly hope that LL stands up and toses this individual out of the mentor group for good.

There's a new design for OIs that was undergoing user testing a few months back. The project seems to've died, but maybe it's starting up again.
