No. There's no minimum time requirement, and no assigned duties. This is *volunteer* work...you can do as much or as little of it as you like, and you can mentor at OI, or Help Island, or a Welcome Area, or on your own land...wherever and whatever you like best.

There ARE different specialty roles that you can qualify for...besides the straight "SL Mentor", there are "Mentor Buddies" and "Mentor Coaches" (people who specialize in training and helping other Mentors), "Mentor Linguists" (people who know one or more foreign languages and get called on when there's a communication problem), "Mentor Greeters" (specializing in OIs and the very newest newbies), and so on.

I like to have time for other things, myself. Here's my typical day...
I'll log on, check my IMs, and deal with any tenant problems on my sim. Then I'll maybe do a little building, or go shopping, or go visit a friend or something.

When things slow down a little and I start thinking that now would be a really good time to get to organizing my long-neglected inventory, I'll decide to pop over to an OI for a while instead.

Usually, in an hour or so, someone will send me an invitation to some party or other. So it's outfit changing time, and off to whatever scene is popping.

And so it goes...

Mentor linguists? That actually sounds like something I could do....so could I specifically request to be that type of mentor?

I rather foolishly assumed it was a role that was intended to help new residents get to grips with SL.

If you want to do that, try NCI or Orientation Station.

Otherwise get ready to lick.......

Ignore the troll, Alyx. Yes, any mentor can be a mentor Linguist. There's a page in the Mentor section of the website where you can sign up, and let people know what languages you speak.

Especially since Babbler stopped working, there's a huge need for multilingual Mentors.

I was wondering because I don't have a lot of time to just spend hanging around any help islands, but I would be willing to help out with language problems. I will go and check out the sign up page then!

If you're thinking about applying but haven't yet, don't take too long to decide since they're capping the number of accepted applications for this quarter and then close them again for up to 3 months after to refocus their efforts onto fixing some of the current problems with mentors.
